we walking?

Why walk?
10% - That’s it. That’s the percentage
of free-flowing, intact rivers left
in the Alps. All the others have
been straightened, dammed and
degraded. That’s why we’re walking.
We want to raise awareness about
the need to protect the remaining
ones. Renewable energy is important,
saving energy is even more important.
We can continue to build and build
and build until that’s all there is…

Warum gehen wir?
10% - das ist der letzte Rest der noch
frei fließenden, intakten Flüsse in den
Alpen.Alle anderen wurden schon
begradigt, gestaut, ausgeleitet oder
verbaut.Deshalb machen wir den
Riverwalk. Wir möchten Bewußtsein für
die Notwendigkeit schaffen, dass zu
schützen und zu erhalten, was übrig ist.
Erneuerbare Energie ist wichtig, Energie
einsparen ist aber noch wichtiger. Oder
wir können weiter verbauen bis auch
die letzten natürlichen Alpenflüsse
verschwunden sind...

Zakaj hodimo?

Večina jih je že zajezenih, stisnjenih
v kanale, uničenih. Zato hodimo.
Radi bi opozorili na pomen zadnjih
ohranjenih rek, ki potrebujejo našo
zaščito. Obnovljivi viri energije so
pomembni, še pomembnejše pa
je varčevanje z energijo. Z gradnjo
lahko nadaljujemo v nedogled in
gradimo, gradimo, gradimo, dokler
ne bo vse pozidano …

Our journey will take us from the
headwaters of the Isel River in
beautiful East Tirol, Austria through
Triglav National Park and down
the Soča River valley to Bovec,
Slovenia.

(EN)The Isel is one of the last great wild alpine rivers in central Europe. The Isel flows from
the Umbalkees Glacier in Hohe Tauern National Park and links the Virgen Valley with
the lower-Isel and Drau Valley. Although the Isel will likely soon receive designation as
a Natura 2000 protected river area, there are existing plans to expand hydropower on
its tributaries which would greatly impact the vitality of the river.
The Soča’s incomparable turquoise waters make it one of the most beautiful alpine
rivers. From its start at a karst spring in Triglav National Park, it discharges into the
Adriatic Sea. With its turquoise pools, waterfalls and rapids, the Soča is an outdoor
paradise, and a popular water sports destination. As the vast majority of alpine rivers
are regulated or used to gain energy, the well-preserved and still pristine Upper Soča
Basin has a significant importance for the entire Alpine region and should be excluded
from further exploitation.
(DE) Die Isel ist einer der letzten ungezähmten Alpenflüsse in Mitteleuropa. Sie entspringt
am sogenannten Umbalkees (Gletscher) im Nationalpark Hohe Tauern und verbindet
die Region mit den alten Kulturlandschaften des Virgentals, des Unteren Iseltals und
des Drautals. Die Isel ist zwar ein sicherer Kandidat für die Ausweisung als Natura 2000
Flussschutzgebiet, jedoch gibt es konkret Bedrohungen durch Wasserkraftprojekte.
Das unvergleichliche Türkis der Soča hat ihr den Beinamen “Smaragdkönigin der Alpen”
gegeben. Ausgehend von einer Karstquelle im Triglav Nationalpark, fließt sie bis zu ihrer
Mündung in die Adria. Ihre türkisen Pools, Wasserfälle und Stromschnellen machen sie
zu einem populären Outdoor- u. Wassersport- Paradies. Da die Mehrzahl der alpinen
Flüsse verbaut bzw. zur Energiegewinnung genützt werden, ist das noch immer natürlich
erhaltene Einzugsgebiet der Oberen Soča von vorrangiger Bedeutung für die gesamte
Alpenregion und sollte in seinem ursprünglichem Zustand erhalten bleiben.
(SL) Reka Isel je ena zadnjih divjih, alpskih rek v osrednji Evropi. Teče od ledenika
Umbalkees v Narodnem parku Visoke Ture in povezuje dolino Virgen z dolino reke
Drave. Kljub temu, da se bo reka Isel najverjetneje kmalu uvrstila v omrežje zavarovanih
območij Natura 2000, pa obstajajo načrti za nadaljnjo hidroenergetsko izrabo njenih
pritokov, kar lahko močno vpliva na življenje v reki.
Reka Soča je zaradi svoje izjemne, smaragdne barve ena najlepših alpskih rek. Izvira v
čudovitem kraškem izviru v Triglavskem narodnem parku in se izliva v Jadransko morje.
Zaradi modrozelenih tolmunov, brzic in slapov, je Soča pravi raj na prostem in privablja
številne ljubitelje vodnih športov. Ker je večina alpskih rek že reguliranih ali energetsko
izkoriščenih, ima ohranjeno zgornje porečje reke Soče velik pomen za celoten alpski
prostor in bi ga zato morali zavarovati pred nadaljnjim izkoriščanjem.
