‫הלכות "הפסקת חשמל"‬

‫כל ההלכות להלן נכונות כאשר אין חשש פיקוח נפש‪ .‬כאשר קיים חשש פיקוח נפש‬
‫חייבים לעשות את כל הפעולות הנצרכות‪.‬‬
‫כאשר יש הפסקת חשמל ביום קר והפקק נפל‪ ,‬ויש בבית ילדים קטנים‪ ,‬קשישים או‬
‫חולים מותר לבקש מגוי להרים את הפקק כדי להפעיל מכשירי חימום‪ .‬ביום קר‬
‫במיוחד הדבר מותר גם עבור בריאים‪.‬‬
‫הדבר מותר גם אם הרמת הפקק תפעיל מכשירי חשמל נוספים שאינם קשורים‬
‫לחימום הבית‪.‬‬
‫במקרה של קור המוזכר לעיל‪ ,‬אם אין גוי‪ ,‬מותר ליהודי להרים את הפקק על פי‬
‫התנאים הבאים‪:‬‬
‫‪ .1‬לפני הרמת הפקק‪ ,‬יש לנתק מהחשמל את כל מכשירי החשמל שאינם קשורים‬
‫לחימום‪.‬‬
‫‪ .2‬יש להרים את הפקק בשינוי‪.‬‬
‫‪ .3‬מותר להפעיל רק מזגן שאין בו גוף חימום‪ ,‬אך לא מכשירי חימום שיש בהם אש‬
‫או גוף חימום (כמו‪ :‬רדיאטור‪ ,‬מפזר חום ותנור ספירלה)‪.‬‬
‫‪ .4‬במקום צורך גדול (למשל כאשר הילדים פוחדים מחושך) מותר גם להשאיר נורת‬
‫לד או פלורסנט בלי סטרטר ‪ ,EL‬אך לא נורת ליבון או פלורסנט עם סטרטר ‪.PL‬‬
‫גם כאשר אין בעיה של קור‪ ,‬מותר לומר לגוי להרים את הפקק בשינוי‪ ,‬אם זו הדרך‬
‫היחידה כדי שיהיה אוכל חם או בשביל תאורה אם יש בה צורך גדול‪.‬‬
‫אם הגוי לא עשה זאת בשינוי אלא בדרך רגילה‪ ,‬מותר ליהנות ממעשיו‪.‬‬
‫בכל מקרה‪ ,‬אם המצב מאפשר‪ ,‬כדאי לפנות לרב כדי לקבל קולות נוספות לשעת‬
‫הדחק‪.‬‬
‫‪Power Outages on Shabbat‬‬
‫‪WHEN HUMAN LIFE IS AT STAKE, ALL NECESSARY ACTIONS ARE PERMITTED.‬‬
‫‪The following halakhot apply when there is no concern that human life is‬‬
‫‪threatened.‬‬
‫‪When there is a power outage on a cold day in a home where young children,‬‬
‫‪elderly, or ill people are present, and it can be rectified to flipping a switch in the‬‬
‫‪electrical panel, one may ask a gentile to flip the switch to turn on heating‬‬
‫‪devices. On an especially cold day, this may even be done on behalf of healthy‬‬
‫‪adults.‬‬
‫‪This is permitted even if flipping the switch will turn on other electrical‬‬
‫‪appliances that have nothing to do with keeping the home warm.‬‬
‫‪‬‬

In the event of cold as mentioned above, if there is no gentile around, a Jew may
flip the switch under the following conditions:
1. Before flipping the switch, unplug all electrical devices not related to
heating.
2. Flip the switch with a shinui.
3. One may only turn on a heater/AC that does not have a heating element.
Devices that have fire or heating elements (radiators, space heaters,
furnaces) should not be turned on.
4. In a case of great need (such as if the children are afraid), one need not
disconnect LED and fluorescent without starter (EL) before flipping the
switch. Incandescent bulbs or fluorescent with starter (PL) must be
disconnected.
Even when there is no problem of cold, it is permitted to instruct a gentile to flip
the switch with a shinui if that is the only way to have hot food or, if there is
great need, light.
If the gentile did the action without a shinui, one may still benefit from his
actions.
In all cases, where possible under the circumstances, one should consult a rabbi
to obtain additional leniencies for extenuating circumstances.
