Velkommen til årets feiring av Internasjonale Dager
I år feirer vi 10-års jubileem for Internasjonale Dager, et årlig arrangement med
samfunnsfokus som ønsker å skape bevissthet, gi kunnskap og fremme globalt
statsborgerskap gjennom å engasjere til diskusjon rundt internasjonale tema.
Internasjonale Dager er en viktig del av å integrere læring, oppdagelse og en
følelse av borgerskap. Det forbedrer det globale perspektivet og interkulturelle
klimaet i byen vår. Det inspirerer medlemmer av samfunnet til å engasjere seg
i aktiviteter som utvikler lederskap og fremmer sosialt og moralsk ansvar. Det
støtter samfunnsengasjement ved å knytte det lokale og globale, nær og fjærn.
Alle disse punktene er integrert i Internasjonale dagers visjon og misjon.
Årets feiring fokuserer på to viktige temaer: Norges 200-årsjubileum for signering
av den norske Grunnloven og FNs internasjonale år for familielandbruk.
I denne sammenheng, har Internasjonale Dager 2014 som mål å: (1) kaste lys
over Norges historiske og internasjonale rolle i utviklingen av demokrati og lov,
og i spørsmål som angår menneskerettigheter, ytringsfrihet, kjønn og likestilling;
(2) markere den viktige rollen av familielandbruk som et svar på utfordringene
verden står overfor i dag: bedre matsikkerhet og bevaring av naturressursene.
Internasjonale Dager 2014 tilbyr et variert og spennende program.
Programmet er utformet for å så nye tanker, og å inspirere til diskusjon og
debatt om aktuelle globale utfordringer. Jeg håper at du vil delta på
så mange arrangementer som mulig. Lytt, bli kjent,

Welcome to this year´s International Days celebration
This year we are celebrating the 10th Year Anniversary of International Days, one
of the largest annual community events designed to create awareness, provide
knowledge and foster global citizenship through engagement with today’s
most pressing issues.
International Days is a key activity integrating learning, discovery and
citizenship. It enhances the global perspective and intercultural climate of our
city. It inspires members of the community to engage in activities that develop
leadership, and foster social and moral responsibility. It supports community
engagement by linking the local and global, the near and the far. All of these are
integral to Internasjonale Dager’s vision and mission.
This year’s celebration focuses on two important themes: Norway’s 200th
year anniversary of the signing of the Norwegian Constitution and the UN
International Year of Family Farming.
In this contexts, International Days 2014 aims to: (1) shed light on Norway’s
historical and international role in the development of democracy and law, and
on issues concerning human rights, freedom of speech, gender and equality;
and, (2) to highlight the important role of family farmers in responding to the
double urgency the world faces today: improving food security and preserving
the natural resources.
International Days 2014 offers a diverse and exciting programme that is
designed to instigate new thoughts, inspire discussions and animate debates
on current global issues. I hope that you will attend as many events as you
can. Listen, connect, participate, and enjoy!

International perspectives on democracy and the Constitution
Opening by Mayor Einar Halvorsen
In collaboration with the UN Association – Southern Norway regional Office and
Kilden Internasjonale Kulturkontor (KIK), students at the Arendal Adult Education
Centre will take us on a tour to revisit the Norwegian Constitution in 2014. The
event will feature musical and cultural performances as well as speeches.
Since 2005 the City of Arendal celebrates International Days every year in
conjunction with UN Day on 24 October. The population of Arendal comprises of
individuals representing more than 80 different nations.

The United Nations has designated 2014 as the International Year of Family
Farming to recognize the role of family farming in the fight against hunger and
poverty and in achieving sustainable development in the rural areas.
The seminar will be opened by Kristin Ianssen, 1st Deputy Chairman of the
Norwegian Farmers’ Union.
The discussion will focus on the role
of Norwegian agriculture in food security in
both local and international contexts. Special
attention will be made to the periods 1814-2014.

The food price spikes of 2007–08 brought food security into sharp focus on the
global agenda. Declines in international commodity markets, financial speculation in
low cereal stocks, dramatic weather events, soaring oil prices, and growth in biofuels
competing for cropland merged to produce a global crisis. Coupled with the growing
impacts of climate change, the question of whether we would have enough food to
feed a growing world population in the future vaulted to the top of political agendas.
However, as with so many global issues, some regions are far more vulnerable to food
insecurity than others. Mountain regions are particularly hard hit. In places such as the
Hindu Kush-Himalaya (HKH), food security is not only a question for the future but for today.
Here, vulnerability is a fact of life. Around half of the world’s undernourished people live in
Bangladesh, China, India, Nepal and Pakistan, and in all of these countries, the mountain
areas have the highest degree of food deficiency.

Utrolig men sant: På vei fra gården til spisebordet, ender mer enn
halvparten av maten i søppelbøtten. Mesteparten før det i det
hele tatt kommer frem til forbrukerne.
