Definition – planting or promoting growth
people walk.5
a) Eating fruits outside - One should be
careful when eating fruits outside not to
drop the seeds on the ground.6
b) Feeding animals - When feeding animals
one should be careful to only put on the
ground enough seeds for one or two days
so that no seeds should be left for 3 days
and take root.7
c) Placing a seed in water – placing a pit (ex:
avocado pit) in water in order for it to
grow roots is prohibited.8

When is the ‫ מלאכה‬transgressed – A seed
placed in the ground take 3 days to take root.1
There is a ‫ מחלוקת‬when the transgression occurs
Watering Plants – one of the ‫ תולדות‬of ‫ זורע‬is
some ‫ פוסקים‬say that one only transgresses the
watering plants since it promotes growth.
‫ מלאכה‬if the seed actually takes root but if it is
a) Washing hands on grass – one is not
permitted to wash his hands over
vegetation, since the water will drip down
and nourish it.9
b) Spilling drinks – any liquid that will cause
growth is forbidden to pour on to
vegetation,10 included in this is beer11,
soda, apple juice etc.12 Wine does not
promote growth and may be poured on
grass.13 Based on this the ‫ רמ"א‬says ‫טוב‬
‫ להחמיר‬that one should not eat outside.14
It would seem included in this would be
removed before then there was no transgression.2
Other ‫ פוסקים‬say that the transgression takes
place as soon as you place the seed in a place
that if left there it would grow, even if it is removed
afterwards.3 Based on this ‫ מחלוקת‬if one dropped
a seed by mistake according to the first opinion he
still has a chance to rectify his mistake, if it is not
Muktzah one should remove it right away, if it is
Muktzah one should remove it right after Shabbos.4
Placing seeds in the ground – ‫ זורע‬is placing a
seed in a place where if left there it will grow. It is
permitted to throw seeds in a place where it will

making a ‫ קידוש‬outside on grass,15 but
some ‫ פוסקים‬permit it.16
c) Spitting or Urinating on grass – one should
take care not to spit on the ground on
Shabbos (in a place that has
vegetation).17 Urinating on the ground is
permitted since it does not promote
growth.18
d) Emptying water off a Chair or Sukkah
Cover – Emptying the water on to the
grass is not permitted, as it will nourish the
grass. But there are situations the ‫פוסקים‬
permit 1) Asking a ‫ גוי‬to do it.19 2) If the
Sukkah is situated on pavement or the
water is spilled on a plastic cover and then
runs off on to the grass it is permitted since
it is only a ‫גרמא‬20 (providing you are not
watering the grass intentionally) 3) If the
ground is totally saturated it is permitted
because adding more water will not
benefit the grass at all.21
e) Sprinkler Systems – One may leave on a
sprinkler from before Shabbos to water the
grass on Shabbos.22 Regarding setting it to
go on on Shabbos there are different
opinions, 1) Some ‫ פוסקים‬permit it across
the board.23 2) Others say only may do it in
a backyard where there is no Maryis Ayin
issue.24 3) Some say one should not have
his sprinklers set to go on on Shabbos
because it is ‫זלזול שבת‬.25
f) Septic Systems – It is permitted to use a
bathroom connected to a septic system.26
But a sink that empties directly onto grass
may not be used.27
g) Placing cut flowers in water – Flowers that
have not opened yet (Rav Nissim Karetlitz
explains as long as it is not totally closed it
is called open28) may not be placed in
water on Shabbos.29 It is forbidden to fill or
add water to a vase on Shabbos as it
involves undue ‫( טירחה‬exertion).30 Open
Flowers may be returned to their original
water.31 Putting flowers for the first time in a
vase that has water in it from Erev Shabbos
is a 32‫מחלוקת‬, if one forgot to put the
flowers in the vase Erev Shabbos he may
put them in on Shabbos.33
h) Moving a vase of cut flowers – One is
permitted to move open flowers in a
vase.34 Closed flowers one should be
careful to move gently so the water does
not shake, if it shakes it might promote
growth.35
Giving Plants Sunlight – increasing sunlight also
promotes growth in plants.
a) Opening shades – One who has plants in
his house and opening the shade will help
it grow, if he is opening the shade
specifically to give the plants sunlight it is
prohibited.36 If he is opening the shade to
let light in for other reasons it is permitted.37
b) Placing vegetables in sunlight to ripen –
one may place a fruit or vegetable in
sunlight in order to ripen, as long as it is
going to be eaten on Shabbos. 38
