Meteorology contributes immensely to the safety and security of life and property,
protection of the environment and thus helps in the socio-economic development
of the society. The increasing frequency and severity of extreme weather events
such as oods, droughts, heat waves, heavy and intense rains etc. pose
potentially disastrous consequences for agriculture, food security and
biodiversity. Climate variability and change are impacting agriculture and other
socio-economic sectors in most parts of the world. Despite considerable
improvements in the observational systems and advancement in the weather
forecast, accuracy of quantitative prediction several days in advance remains a big
challenge for meteorologists across the globe. Moreover, translation of forecast
into warnings and implementation of warnings into action by the disaster mangers
need considerable improvement. Public perception including those of media about
climate change and its impact also needs attention. Planning for appropriate
adoption of the latest developments in science & technology to mitigate the
economic and ecological impacts of extreme events is need of the hour.
Knowledge sharing, critical thinking and proper understanding of user-priorities
are urgently needed for formulating solutions to issues which range from the
global to local.
With this background, the Indian Meteorological Society is organizing a National
Symposium TROPMET 2015 on “Weather & Climate Extremes”. It will provide a
unique opportunity to operational meteorologists, researchers, planners,
hydrologists, agriculturists, disaster managers, instrumentation scientists and
technology developers to exchange their views on the subject.
