COURSE CONCEPT
Based on the growing complexity of patients at St. David’s Women’s Center of Texas/
St. David’s North Austin Medical Center, members of the obstetrical staff requested a high
quality educational program focused on the most common obstetrical emergencies.
Pre-conference session — Practical Considerations for Nurses & EMTs in Obstetric
Emergencies: This session is designed for pre-hospital providers. Emergency Physicians may
also find this session beneficial.
Management of the Obstetric Crisis Symposium: Obstetricians, Obstetric Resident Physicians,
Certified Nurse Midwives, Advanced Practice Nurses, Physician Assistants, and Obstetric Nurses.

· Provide an evidence based, peer reviewed protocol for safe Oxytocin use.
· Review the latest FDA statement regarding the use of Magnesium sulfate.
· Review the evidence based protocols for the prevention of DVT after C/S, managing
hypertensive crisis in pregnancy, managing maternal hemorrhage to prevent maternal death.
· Review the March of Dimes algorithm for preterm labor triage assessment to improve
detection of preterm labor and decrease cost by overutilization of tocolytics and
hospitalization .

NICU Preemie from a Parent’s Perspective
· Describe the range of emotional reactions that may be exhibited by
parents of an infant in the NICU.
· List at least one way that NICU staff can promote positive coping and
parenting skills among NICU parents.
· List two strategies to support emotionally distressed NICU parents,
whether they are moms or dads.
CREDITS
St. David’s Medical Center is accredited by the Texas Medical Association to provide continuing medical education for
physicians. St. David’s Medical Center designates this live activity for a maximum of 9 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.
Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. The
presentation, “Ethical Care of the NICU Preemie from a Parent’s Perspective”, has been designated by St. David’s Medical
Center for 1 hour of education in medical ethics and/or professional responsibility.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has assigned 9 cognate credits to this program.
Nurses may earn contact hours of continuing nursing education upon completion of this activity.

an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
