There were various opinions concerning who he might be. Some thought he was Elijah, John the Baptist, Jeremiah or some other prophet who had been resurrected from the dead. The views of the people were numerous; however, Jesus inquired, “But whom say ye that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my father which is in heaven. And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (Matt. 16:15-18). “I” and “My” are possessive terms indicating the church belongs to Christ, being founded by him. Therefore, it is the church of Christ, not John the Baptists’ church, nor does it belong to any other man or group of men who have founded churches. If the church to which you belong was founded by or upon someone other than Christ it is counterfeit. The Roman Catholic church quotes this verse and takes great pride in maintaining the church was built upon Peter. However, the word Peter is the Greek word “Petros” which is MASCULINE GENDER. But the “ROCK” on which the church is built is the Greek word “Petra” which is FEMININE GENDER. Thus, one can, or should, see the fallacy of the Roman contention. Loraine Boettner stated truthfully: “Had Christ intended to say that the church would be founded on Peter, it would have been ridiculous for Him to have shifted to the feminine form of the word in the middle of the statement, saying, if we may translate literally and somewhat whimsically. “And I say unto thee, that thou art Mr. Rock, and upon this, the Miss Rock, I will build my church” (Roman Catholicism, Pg. 106). Beloved, the “rock” on which the church was built was the TRUTH Peter had just confessed; the fact that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. Christ is the builder and also the foundation of His church. The apostle Paul declared: “For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ” (I Cor. 3:11).
