STEWARDSHIP
“Then he said to his servants, The feast is ready, but
those who were invited were not worthy to come. Go
out, therefore, into the main roads and invite to the
feast whomever you find.’ The servants went out into
the streets and gathered all they found, bad and good
alike, and the hall was filled with guests."
Matthew 22: 8-10
God invites us in so many ways to become close to
Him, to answer His invitation and to embrace
stewardship as a way of life. This invitation comes to
us constantly through Holy Scripture and through the
Gospel. How many of us hear the Word, but then just
go back to our lives as they were before? That is what
is happening in this parable. Those invited ignore the
invitation and continue with their lives. The key
message from Jesus is that it does not matter if we
respond to God’s invitation with anger or indifference;
they are equally grave reactions.

ALL SOULS RECEPTION FOR THOSE WHO
HAVE LOST A LOVED ONE All those who have
lost a loved one are invited to join us for the 8am All
Soul’s Mass on Sunday, November 2, and for a
reception after Mass in the gathering space of the
church. We especially invite all who have lost a loved
one over the past year. All widows and widowers are
also invited to attend.
SOCIAL JUSTICE
RESPECT LIFE - HUMAN DIGNITY
The Catholic Church teaches us that human life is
sacred and that the dignity of each human being is the
foundation of a moral vision for society. Treating all life
with dignity is as simple as the Golden Rule: treat others
the way you would want them to treat you. As imperfect
beings this gets hard for us when it concerns someone
different from us. This week, in observance of Respect
Life Sunday, let’s pray for ourselves. That we may be
able to treat all with dignity: the unborn child, the
mentally ill, the homeless, the unemployed, the
immigrant, and the elderly.
BREAD FOR THE WORLD SUNDAY
Bread for the World is a collective Christian voice urging
our nation’s decision makers to end hunger at home
and abroad. Moved by God’s grace and love in Jesus
Christ, we reach out to our neighbors, whether they live
in the next house, the next state, or the next continent.
By changing the policies and conditions that allow
hunger to persist, we provide help and opportunity far
beyond the communities in which we live. Hunger is not
a partisan issue, and Bread for the World works with a
network of thousands of individual members, churches,
and denominations to ensure a presence in all U.S.
congressional districts. Bread equips and inspires its
members to meet with, call, and write personal letters
and emails to their members of Congress.
Every year, our parish participates in an “Offering of
Letters” by signing a petition urging congress to act on
laws that affect the hungry. This year we will have a
petition out on the weekend of October 25 & 26, asking
our members of congress to make changes to US Food
Aid policies that would make our food aid program more
effective. Please consider adding your name to the
petition.

A NOTE FROM FR. JEFF
WELCOMED AND VALUED is a new program provided
by Catholic Charities of Kansas City-St. Joseph. This
program is designed to create parish communities that
offer support and hope for people with mental illness and
their families. Faith communities like St. Sabina can be of
tremendous help - offering hope, unconditional love, and
support to people who often find themselves stigmatized
and isolated from the community. Over the next six
weeks there will be brief articles in our bulletin, I ask that
you read them and then spend time in prayer and
reflection on how you can better understand and minister
to people with mental illness and their families. On
Saturday, November 15 at 10am Catholic Charities will
be at our parish for the first of a two-part educational
series “Mental Health Basics, Understanding Its Impact
on Families”. For more information contact Marta Roper
in the parish office at 816-979-3154.
FOCUS ON MENTAL ILLNESS
LIVING WITH MENTAL ILLENSS
Many people with mental illness are in recovery and lead
normal lives. Due to the stigma associated with mental
illness, you and I are probably not aware of their illness.
They are not likely to tell anyone at work or in the
neighborhood that they have a major mental illness.
Others with mental illness are able to work, but at times
find the disease debilitating. Tragically, they might have
health insurance while they can work and not need it and
have no health insurance when they cannot work and are
in need of it. Others will never be able to work and have
to rely on public assistance and programs to help them
throughout their life. Still others find themselves in a
constant cycle of crisis due to no insurance or
inadequate or inconsistent systems of mental health
care. As a faith community we can make a difference in
peoples’ lives by being accepting of their illness,
comforting them in time of crisis, and supporting them
when needed. For more information, please contact
Marta Roper in the parish office, 816-979-3154.

LITURGY
NOW FORMING: ART & ENVIRONMENT
COMMITTEE
What Is Art and Environment? Simply put, it is the
decoration of the church space. But more than that, it
is the way we enhance our worship by highlighting
important areas in the church. You may notice that the
church decorations change as the seasons of the
church year change. It takes a group of people to make
that happen. Many different skills, talents and interests
are needed. You may be a seamstress and desire to
help sew banners or other fabric decoration. Perhaps
you have an eye for design and could help design
banners or seasonal decoration. You might have a
green thumb and be interested in caring for the live
plants on a weekly basis. Maybe you just like to help
out and would enjoy the work of putting up and taking
down seasonal decorations a few times a year.
Whatever your interests, you are invited to attend an
organizational meeting of the Art and Environment
committee on Thursday, October 23 at 1:00 PM in
the parish conference room.
Contact Susan Ratigan in the parish office at 979-3158
or [email protected] for more information.

ADULT FAITH FORMATION
REFLECTION ON THE 28TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, YEAR A
As we approach the end of the liturgical year, the
readings focus on the end times, the scenarios that
envision what relationship with God will be for those
who respond positively to God’s invitation as well as the
fate of those who reject God’s invitation. Today’s
readings unpack the Jewish image of eternal life with
God as a wedding banquet. Our God is the loving and
generous host and provider who lavishes us with “rich
food and choice wines.” We are invited to be part of
that wedding banquet both now and for all times. How
will we respond to God’s invitation to the eternal
wedding banquet?
God’s covenant with all of creation was often
understood by the Jewish people as a marriage
relationship. God chose to be in close and intimate
relationship with all of humanity, with the depth of love
and intimacy characteristic of a marriage relationship.
The prophets Isaiah and Hosea both express this
intimacy with great tenderness.
The marriage
relationship image led to picturing our life with God in
terms of an eternal wedding banquet, in which God was
the bridegroom and we the bride.
Isaiah in the first reading imagines a time when God,
our host and loving provider, will lavish us with a rich
banquet. God will wipe away all tears and reproach
from the people. This reading is often used at funerals
to convey that our relationship with God not only
continues with our death, but enters a whole new and
more intimate expression, symbolized by a rich and
lavish banquet.
Responsorial Psalm 23 emphasizes our desire to be
always with the Lord by asking us to affirm in the refrain
that “I shall live in the house of the Lord all the days of
my life.” Psalm 23, like the Isaiah reading, stresses
God’s lavish hospitality as host in providing peace,
security, a home and food for all those who accept
God’s invitation to the banquet. How could anyone
refuse such an invitation?
Matthew’s parable of the king giving a lavish wedding
banquet for his son tells us that the special guests
invited to the feast refuse the
invitation and reject the special
intimacy and relationship that God
invites us to. The king is persistent
in his invitation and does not give
up. He invites any and all who are
willing to come to the wedding
feast. God desires to be in intimate
relationship with all and invites all to the eternal
banquet. But God does not force, leaving it up to us to
accept or refuse.
Accepting the invitation however involves more than
just showing up. Such an acceptance implies that we
are willing to live and act according to God’s will and
desires. Jesus is the bridegroom who shows us how to
live.
If we accept God’s invitation, then we are
responsible for living the Jesus life style and values.
Refusing to do so will automatically render us unsuitable
for the banquet.
In accepting God’s loving and
generous invitation to the eternal wedding banquet, how
will you prepare yourself to be an intimate part of that
banquet?
A good measure of our readiness for the banquet
might be our readiness for entering into the weekly
Eucharistic banquet. How well do you prepare for
entering into intimate relationship with God at our
Sunday
Eucharist?
Could it be an indication
of your readiness to
enter
the
eternal
banquet with God? Ask
God for help and
guidance in living today
in such a manner that
enables you to prepare
for the eternal wedding
banquet in the Lord’s
house.

BIBLE STUDY AND SUNDAY READINGS
Catholics are mostly exposed to the Bible through the
Sunday Lectionary Readings. In order to help us all enter
into the Bible through the Sunday readings, we are
offering study sessions that will provide an opportunity to
read, to study background to the readings, and to reflect
on how to apply the readings to our lives. We will gather
on October 12th and October 26th at 10:30am. All are
welcome. Bring a Bible and a friend. To register for these
sessions, please call Biagio at 816-979-3153.

WELLNESS CENTER
LET’S ALL GO TO COSTA RICA AND LIVE A
LONG, HEALTHY LIFE!
If you have been reading this series of articles about
people who live long lives, you may have noticed some
common threads and themes throughout the different
cultures. Costa Rica is no different. Here are her
secrets:
Have a plan de vida: Successful centenarians have a
strong sense of purpose. They feel needed and want
to contribute.
Drink hard water. The area of Costa Rica where
people tend to live a long life, has the country’s highest
calcium content. This perhaps explains the lower rates
of heart disease, as well as stronger bones and fewer
hip fractures.
Keep a focus on family. Costa Rican centenarians tend
to live with their families, and children or grandchildren
provide support and sense of purpose and belonging.
Eat a light dinner. Eating fewer calories appears to be
one of the surest ways to add years to your life.
Maintain social networks. Costa Ricans frequently visit
neighbors. They know how to listen, laugh, and
appreciate what they have.
Keep hard at work. Centenarians seem to have
enjoyed physical work all of their lives. They find joy in
everyday physical chores.
Get some sensible sun. Costa Ricans regularly take in
sunshine, which helps their bodies produce vitamin D
for strong bones and healthy body function. Vitamin D
deficiency is associated with a host of problems, such
as osteoporosis and heart disease, but regular, “smart”
sun exposure (about 15 minutes on the legs and arms)
can help supplement your diet and make sure you’re
getting enough of this vital nutrient.
To your health!!!

WELCOMING DINNER - NEXT WEEKEND
We will be hosting a Welcoming Dinner on Saturday,
October 18 at 5pm. If you are a new parishioner this
year, or are interested in joining our parish, please join
us for food and fellowship with other new parishioners,
parish staff, and ministry leaders. This will be a potluck so please bring a salad, side dish or dessert to
share.
WORLD MISSION SUNDAY COLLECTION
Next weekend our parish will celebrate World Mission
Sunday. This year we are invited to reach out and help
build the Church in Mongolia, the world’s youngest
Catholic Church, as well as local churches throughout
the Missions, in the most remote areas across our
world. Through the work of these churches, and their
witness to Christ, the poor receive practical help and
experience God’s love and mercy, His hope and
peace. Please keep the Missions in your daily prayers.
Please come prepared next weekend to give
generously in the collection for the Society for the
Propagation of the Faith. For more information, please

CORRESPONSABILIDAD
RESPETO A LA VIDA—LA DIGNIDAD HUMANA
CENA DE BIENVENIDA—PRÓXIMO FIN DE
SEMANA
y escribir cartas personales y correos electrónicos a
invita a extender nuestras manos y ayudar a construir

(Rom. 10,14).
