The Connection Connection First Baptist Church Of Shepherdsville October, 2014 Volume X, Number 10 Join Us for Our Second Annual Health Fair! We had such a great turn out and response from our first Health Fair last year, we decided to do it again! This year’s Health fair will be Oct. 18, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. We are inviting church members as well as our food pantry and Martie’s Kitchen clients to join us for free health screenings, lunch, flu shots, booths with information about dental and eye care as well as nutritional information, and a physician on site to make recommendations (not treatment) based on FBC Library Is Looking to Expand! By Linda Hobbs Th an k s f or y ou r help! FBC Library needs your help again!!! FBC Library is full of many wonderful books that are sure to appeal to anyone who likes to read. Books may be signed out anytime the educational building is open and may be kept up to two weeks. Thanks to everyone who has helped make this a reality with their generous donations of books over the last few months. We realize not everyone loves to read or perhaps are unable to read due to eyesight issues so we would like to expand our library with an assortment of movies to appeal to all ages. If you have Christian, inspirational or family oriented DVDs that you would like to share with others, we will make them available through FBC Library. Movies may be kept for one week. We only have a few at this point, but are planning to expand quickly with the help of our church family and friends. For more info or to donate contact CoLibrarians: Shela Bolus (502693-0403) or Linda Hobbs (502-599-1202) 1 screening results. We will also be distributing food boxes and opening the clothing closet, for those who are in need of those services. If you know anyone who would benefit from this event, please invite them to join us for this event! Seasons of Change.... Seasons of Growth By Dale Raines There’s no denying it—Fall is here. For some people, that’s welcome news. An end to 90 degree heat, no more unbearable humidity. Football season is here. It’s time for pumpkins and jackets, hayrides and evenings around the fire pit. But others don’t get so excited about Fall’s arrival. They lament the days becoming shorter, and can’t help thinking about the approach of Winter. That’s another thing about Fall, you see. It’s when all of the long-range weather forecasts come out with their predictions about what kind of Winter we should expect. Most of the ones I’ve heard so far seem to think we’re in for plenty of snow again this year. But who knows? The theme with all of this is change. Living in this part of the country, we’re used to seasons changing. We may not always like all of the changes involved in going from one season to the next, but we know it’s inevitable, we know it will happen, whether we like it or not. And so we accept it, we prepare, we adjust, and we go on. And deep down, we know that change has the potential to be positive. If nothing ever changed, there would be no such thing as growth. The knockout roses I planted a year ago look very different now. They’ve changed, because they’ve grown. But what about in my life and yours? Are we holding onto how things are, or how they used to be so much that we’re in danger of missing out on how God wants to grow us? Author Gail Sheehy said, “If we don't change, we don't grow. If we don't grow, we aren't really living.” How is God working in you, in me, in our church, 2 to change us, to help us grow? Are we resisting what God is doing, maybe because we don’t want to change? Or are we welcoming the work of the Spirit to effect Godly change in us? I pray that we can say with Isaiah: Yet you, LORD, are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand. (Isaiah 64:2, NIV) Let’s allow the potter to shape us, to mold us, and yes, to change us, so that we can grow more and more into the people and into the church God wants us to be. Please keep these individuals in your daily prayers. Letter and Update From Charles White Dear Friends of Ernst, It is with a grateful and sad heart I write this. First, want to thank you for joining me in my journey with Ernst through his college experience in Haiti. It saddens me to inform you that our journey has come to an end. Shortly after my last communiqué with you, I receive a partial grade report from Ernst for his last term. It was unacceptable. Even if the remainder of his grades had been good, it would not have brought his performance up to an acceptable (C) average. Since the report was in French, I sent it to Jenny, the CBF nurse in Haiti, for clarification. She investigated, met with Ernst and confirmed my understanding. I apologize for sending a request for support and a couple weeks later saying I no longer need it. One thing Jenny learned in her investi- gation was that it was not unusual for Haitian students not to receive their grade reports until the first day of their next term. Ernst had to beg his professors to get even a partial report. I could wait no longer to seek support for the next term, but would not have sent any money until I received the report. Jenny also learned that in Haiti colleges do not dismiss students for poor performance. They let them continue their course of study and then go back and retake the courses they failed. Ernst could have continued, but I am not willing to support him at a subpar level of performance nor am I willing to ask you for continued support. I feel bad that on my word alone you have given your hard earned money toward his education. But I don’t think it was wasted. Ernst now has two years of college which is 5 considerably more than the vast majority of Haitians. Hopefully, it has broadened him as a person and will give him a leg-up in the job market as he begins assuming the care of his handicapped siblings. Within the next two or three weeks, I will begin returning your money. I will begin with the last money given and move up the list until all the remaining money in the account is returned. The reason for the delay is I had to order checks. I had no need of checks until now because all the money was wired to Ernst school account in Haiti. Again, let me say thank you. You have enabled a fine young man to gain some advantage in life as he continues to take more responsibility for his current family and looks toward building a family of his own. I am deeply grateful for those who brought food, mowed our grass, sent cards, and in any other way demonstrated your care and concern. Most of all, thank you for your prayers. I have no doubt that I am the beneficiary of the power of those prayers. It has been a blessing to be reminded, once again, of the amazing strength of Christ's love expressed through his people. Thank you! Dale Raines Pastor Raines & Members A really big “thank-you” to each and every one for your prayers and cards during my recent hospitalizations in Kentucky and Arizona.
