The Sacrament of Confirmation in the Catholic Church
Week of October 12, 2014
"Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of
God, they sent to them Peter and John, who came down and prayed for them that they
might receive the Holy Spirit; for it had not yet fallen on any of them, but they had only
been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid their hands on them and
they received the Holy Spirit" (Acts 8:14-17).
Baptism, the Eucharist, and the sacrament of Confirmation together constitute the
"sacraments of Christian initiation," whose unity must be safeguarded. Confirmation
perfects Baptismal grace; it is the sacrament which gives the Holy Spirit in order to root
us more deeply in the divine filiation, incorporate us more firmly into Christ, strengthen
our bond with the Church, associate us more closely with her mission, and help us bear
witness to the Christian faith in words accompanied by deeds.

Prayer for the Sick
Father in heaven, grant comfort to those
for whom we pray. Give them courage
when afraid, patience when afflicted,
hope when dejected, and when alone
assure them of the prayerful support of
your holy people. We ask this through
Christ our Lord. Amen.
Role of the Confirmation
Sponsor
The role of a Confirmation Sponsor is
to act as a good example of Catholic
Christian faith and to walk with and
support you on your own faith journey
throughout your life.
Some questions the Confirmed
might want to ask their sponsor to
learn how they have grown in faith.
1. Do you remember your
Confirmation?
2. Did you choose a saints name?
Why or why not?
3. Do you have a favorite place to
pray?
4. Which gifts of the Holy Spirit have
been a source of strength to you?
5. What spiritual advice do you have
for me?
Maybe we all could use questions
like this to review our own faith
progression and renew our gifts in
the Spirit.
Come Holy Spirit and renew us in
your love!
