Again there were a number of events over the holidays involving many of our staff and
students. The State Basketball School Championships (CHAMP schools) were held in
Logan at the end of term and the start of the holidays. A big thank you to Mr Vince
Webb, for his great work with the boys and to Ms Lauren Mua who coached the girls.
The students did themselves proud over the 4 days of playing. Vince has an article in the
newsletter which gives details.
The annual Ignite Conference was also held over the holidays and Mr Michael Dougherty
did a wonderful job of coordinating this event. We also hosted St John’s of Nambour at
this event. A number of staff was involved with preparing meals and assisting the
students throughout this conference. Thank you to Les and Suellen Conroy, Ms
Christine Jones, Mr Reuben Pather and Mr Shaun Morris. The students always get a lot
out of this experience of developing their spirituality.
The State Honours Ensemble Program was held at the Queensland Conservatorium and
four of our incredibly talented music students were involved. I would like to give a special
thanks and congratulations to our instrumental teacher Ms Darlene Ferguson, for her
outstanding work with all of our music students. Ms Nicole Johnston, our Cultural
Coordinator, has a full report in the newsletter.

This week has seen the start of the leadership process for 2015. Twenty-seven Year 11
students addressed their peers as to why they should be our College Captain next year.
This is a great tribute to the depth of talent in the student body. Twelve of those students
will address the assembly next week and the voting and interview process will also occur
then. At the same time, the Year 8s will be voting for their Middle Phase Captain and
interviews for that will also occur on Tuesday. Best wishes to all our students for having
the courage to stand up and step outside their comfort zone. We are very fortunate in
the quality of our students, and I look forward to welcoming the new leadership team.
The All Schools Touch Football competition is currently underway and we wish all our
students, plus staff, Mr Mike Connelly, Ms Kelly Woods and Ms Michelle Wust, the very
best over the next few days. Our touch program has seen this sport go from strength to
strength in recent years.
As you are aware, the College is hosting the QLD Police Service 150 Year Anniversary
on Saturday night. This is a gala event with dignitaries such as Wyatt Roy, Federal
Member for Longman, Ian Steward, QLD Police Commissioner, in attendance. Our
students are involved in preparing and serving the canapés on the night, as well as
serving food and drinks throughout the evening. It promises to be a wonderful show case
of the College facilities and our students.
You would have received via email a letter requesting to be informed if your child has
measles, chicken pox or shingles. It is very important for the health of our students that
we obtain this information as early as possible.

Bullying is often raised as an issue in schools and the community generally. We are partnering with the University of
QLD in a research project over the end of this term and into 2015. It involves current students in Years 8-11. We
need more students involved to make the research valid. To email your consent for your child’s participation, please

Dinner & Liturgy. We encourage your participation in these events if they apply to you. A reminder that October 20

The Concert Band Spectacular is also almost here and I thank the P&F, Ms Nicole Johnson and Mrs Jill Dearling for
the huge amount of work they have put into this event. It is on next Friday & Saturday (17 & 18 October), with
Saturday being the secondary schools day and a large number of schools and ensembles participating. Please
come along and enjoy the quality music of this event.

College Notices to Parents/Guardians
Medial Alert!
At present in the College we have a student who is immunosuppressed, meaning that this student has a
lower immunity system and cannot fight infections in the ‘normal’ way. We have been advised by the Royal
Children’s Hospital that, as such, it is extremely important that we are aware of any other student who may
have measles, chicken pox and shingles, as the virus that causes these diseases could make this student
extremely unwell. We ask that if your child has one of these illnesses, to please contact the College.
Medicine is available that will lessen the side effect of exposure to such infections, but it does need to be
taken as soon as possible after contact with that illness.
Please be very aware that no student is at risk because of the presence of this student at the College.

P & F Funding for Representative Sports Teams:
If your son/ daughter has been selected in a regional, state or national team there is some funding available through
the P&F to assist with the cost of competing at this high level. In order to apply for this funding a copy of the
selection paperwork needs to be submitted to Miss Wust to fill out the P&F application paperwork . The latest date
that it can be submitted is Friday 24 October.
Applications are now open!
A $2000 Bursary is available to students enrolling in environmental studies at University this year.
The Moreton Bay Regional Council is again offering the Don Perrin Environmental Bursary in 2015 to assist a
resident in our region with their tertiary educational expenses. The bursary consists of a payment of $2000 which
can be used for educational expenses associated with their course of study.
The successful applicant will:
 a resident of the Moreton Bay Regional Council area, and
 graduated from Year 12 within the last two years, and
 have accepted an offer to study an environmental-based university degree.
Courses could include an Environmental Science, Environmental Law, Environmental Engineering, Sustainable
Architecture Bachelor of Science, Marine Science, Environmental Management, Environmental Health,
Environmental Education or similar. For more information on the requirements and application form, see

2014 State Honour’s Ensemble Program
Four of St Columban’s finest instrumental students Eryn Fletcher (Alto Saxophone), Brittany Cooper (Trumpet), Kyle
Lacey-Janetzki (Baritone Saxophone) and Tish Ford (Alto Saxophone) were nominated and accepted into the 2014
State Honour’s Ensemble Program, held at the Queensland Conservatorium, during the holidays.
SHEP gives secondary school wind, brass, percussion, string and vocal students the opportunity to work in an
intensive environment of musical excellence, with their peers from throughout Queensland, under the leadership of a
team of eminent State, National and International Conductors.
800 students, from across the state, from Years 8-12 participated in the event. Students rehearsed at Queensland
Conservatorium, South Bank on Thursday 2 to Saturday 4 October and then represented their school in uniform at a
Grand Finale Concert in the Conservatorium Theatre on Sunday 5th October.
Our students handled the pressure exceptionally well, with each day consisting of 6 hours rehearsal with only two 15
minute breaks.
They are used to performing in ensembles and concert bands ranging from 8-25 performers. This is the largest scale
performance any of them have taken part in, playing in orchestras of 100.
The students were under the pump to learn their music quickly and were not allowed to take the sheet music home
to practise.
Eryn and Tish learnt three pieces across the three days, totaling 25 minutes for their performance on the Sunday.
Kyle learnt four, whilst Brittany learnt five pieces, both totaling 30 minutes each for their performance.
Eryn and Tish both expressed how grateful they were to be nominated and accepted into this prestigious event.
Since year 8, they have both been nominated for a number of external instrumental programs, similar to SHEP, with
this being the first in which they have been accepted.
Kyle and Brittany were both included in a similar program in Year 9 (The Sunshine Coast Honours Ensemble), but
are thankful to have been included in the larger, more advanced SHEP program.
All four students have returned glowing from the experience, and expressed how much it broadened their
performance experience and have left them eager for more.

Championship Basketball School of Queensland 2014
This is the largest basketball competition in the state with over 100 teams from schools throughout the state. It was
held over 4 days at the end of Term 3.
Girls’ Team
The girls’ team was participating in a combined division 1 and 2
competition. Players included Hannah Farr, Xiena Bevan, Jessica
Grehan, Ashlyn Evans, Georgia Hayes, Maddie Clark, Stephanie
Hudson, Lily Bindon and Emma Grehan. The team was coached by
Lauren Mua from Caboolture Basketball and managed by Jenny Grehan
and Julie Atkins.
The first day of competition started with a very close game that took a
great deal of intelligence and patience to win. With no shot clock, the
girls managed to successfully defend their lead to win by two after
running the clock down for nearly 60 seconds. The second game was
relatively easy with the girls winning by 40 points. Day two was tough
with our team being beaten in both games by teams that went on to
finish in the top 8. This put us comfortably in 3rd place in Pool D coming
into the quarter finals.
The team started strongly against the Varsity Vipers, leaping to a 12 point lead by ¾ time, and always looking like
the better team. Unfortunately conflicting sporting commitments saw us lose a key player, then our two ‘bigs’ were
fouled off. Some very lucky shots by the opposition meant they not only caught us, they beat us by three. Such a
big disappointment would bring most teams down, but the girls rallied to comfortably win their next game against
Nambour Christian College.
Sunday morning bought the final game of the carnival – playing for 5th in Division 2. Again, without one of our key
players, the team fought valiantly, but were eventually beaten by St Margaret Mary College. In her last game
Captain Hannah Farr showed everyone how to play basketball, top scoring with 16 points!! The girls at all times
behaved beautifully, and should be very proud of the way they represented the school in their journey to 14th in the
state (6th place in Division 2).
Boys Team
The boys were participating in the top division as they have done for
several years now. This includes the top 16 school teams in the state
and relies on strong season and past results to maintain eligibility. The
team included Todd Thomas, Riley Martin, Dylan Howe, Kelcey
Richards, Joshua Donaldson, Marco Roelfs, Kasey Lucas, Joshua
Rock, Jordan Burrow and Brenton Ferguson. The team was coached
by Vince Webb and Hans Gubesch and managed by Aleisha Gubesch.
The first day included 2 close games against BBC and Brisbane State
High, both GPS schools. In high scoring games we went down by 8
and 7. To make matters worse our second day our opponents were the
winners of our pool and the eventual competition winners. The first
game against Townsville’s Ignatius Park and despite getting well
behind we came back but went down by 6. Ipswich Grammar was too
strong for us winning comfortably.
Our day 1 and 2 results meant that the best we could do was 9th. Our next opponent was JPC and while they were
down a few players we were happy to take our second win over them for the year, by 13 points this time. Our second
game for the day was against Chisholm College and was one of the best games I have been involved in. We had a
15 point lead early in the game but saw this whittled down until we were 2 points down in the last minute. In the last
15 seconds, a remarkable piece of good fortune by Kelcey Richards, a brilliant 3 pointer by Riley Martin and a big
defensive play by Dylan Howe saw us win by a point. This was all done with a large supporters group including some
of the girls’ team, old boys and parents. It was a great atmosphere and result.
This gave us the opportunity to play for 9th place. In our lowest scoring game we fought hard defensively to stay in
the game but could not hit the crucial baskets despite creating good opportunities. We eventually went down by 6 to
finish tenth overall. This is a fantastic result and is a reflection of the great skills, the depth of the team and the spirit
of the group.
Thanks to the parents and friends for their great support of the players and team including transport and scoring. The
generosity of coaches and managers Lauren, Jenny, Julie, Hans and Aleisha is appreciated and essential. Michelle
Wust also did us a great service getting photos of some of the girls’ and boys’ games. Special thanks go to the
Gubesch family who generously prepared meals for the teams for the duration of the carnival. This on the back of
their generosity in time and knowledge this year, and in the past and I trust, the future.

Senior AFL
The AFL season is over, but don’t worry, the StC Senior Aussie Rules team will continue their journey into the finals
of the QLD Independent Schools competition next Monday 13, playing in the semi-final against Grace Lutheran
College. The game will be held on our home ground at Burpengary Regional Sports Park at 4.15pm. If we are
successful we will play in the Grand Final on Friday 17, venue to be advised. So if you want to get your AFL fix and
see the St Columban’s boys in action, come down and show your support on game day.

MOBILE PHONE RECYCLING PROGRAM
Australian Mobile Recycling was founded in September 2011. Their aim is to collect as many used and
unwanted mobile phones as possible. All mobile phones will be recycled for reuse, which means they
will be refurbished for resale. Handsets are restored to factory conditions and all Sim card and memory
cards are destroyed.
Any phones that are beyond repair will be broken down into their constituent parts and recycled by
Australian licensed recyclers.
For our recycling efforts our school will receive $3 for every mobile phone returned. Your contribution will not only raise
money for our school community but also help the environment in a positive way by reducing waste. BRING IN YOUR
OLD MOBILE PHONES and place in the box at the school office student counter.

Come together with friends, families and work colleagues to light a lantern and join us on a
sunset walk to support blood cancer patients. Each coloured lantern contains a tiny light
and has a special meaning: White for blood cancer patients and survivors; Blue for
supporters and Gold for those remembering a loved one lost.

Friday Nights are looking up in Caboolture. It starts 5pm Friday 17 October.
The Town Square will host a summer Twilight Fiesta of food, music and art – open air dining and browsing under the
stars for families, couples and singles. Supported by the Moreton Bay Regional Council, the Fiesta will offer street
food of many nationalities, boutique wines, music and dance entertainment from locals, visiting artists and various
cultural groups, schools and organisations in the region, demonstrations, and artisans stalls, and children’s activities
in the excellent Town Square venue, under the lights from 5 – 9pm.
The Regional Art Gallery in the Hub adjoining the Square will be open til 8pm featuring the magnificent String Theory
exhibition. Fiesta Project Managers Julie and Peter Thomson have been planning the Fiesta all year, to enhance
community engagement and build a social and cultural asset for the Caboolture region.

Are you a parent of a child with type 1 diabetes?
Every day, thousands of Australian children suffer the effects of type 1 diabetes and families struggle with
illness management and children’s behavioural and emotional adjustment.
Positive Parenting for Healthy Living is an adaptation of the successful Triple P- Positive Parenting Program offering
practical ideas and support for parents of children with type 1 diabetes. This innovative group program is designed to
help parents manage their child’s illness, assist children in coping with their illness and emotions, and prevent and
manage difficult child behaviour.
Over the next few months and for a limited time only, parents of 2-10 year old children with type 1 diabetes are able to
access Positive Parenting for Healthy Living Triple P as part of a University of Queensland research project. Parents
will be able to attend the program free of charge, and will be asked to complete 2 sets of assessment measures
