The weekend saw a number of wonderful celebrations of student talent in the Boys
Aussie Rules and the Concert Band Spectacular. Please see inside for details of both of
these events. I was fortunate to be able to see most of Friday and Saturday’s music
performances and thoroughly enjoyed them!
I would like to congratulate Ms Nicole
Johnstone, Mrs Jill Dearling, Mrs Janet
Pryor and Ms Toni Prickett from our staff for
all the work they contributed to this event. I
would also like to acknowledge the
incredible work of our P&F Association. The
Concert Band Spectacular was really the
brain child of a number of our parents and
they have been very active in promoting this
event, and music generally, in the College. It
was lovely to see so many students come
together to celebrate music and the joy that it brings.
Unfortunately I did not get to the Aussie Rules final as we had the annual Past Students
Association function on the same evening in the city of Brisbane. However the boys
ended up winning with a victory over Hillbrook College. Congratulations to the boys and
coaches Mr Jacob May, Mr Mark Lucas and Mr Damien Harvey.

The Past Students function went well on Friday night with approximately 120 past
students attending with 30 attending from the class of 1974. It was a very positive and
uplifting night with lots of tales to be told of past deeds and misadventures of some of our
past students! A small number of our current students attended for the early part of the
evening and I know they enjoyed engaging with some of our students from the Albion
days. The common theme from some of the older past students was disappointment that
there were no girls at school in their day! A big thank you to Mrs Linda Upton for all the
work she had done prior to this event. Thanks also to staff Mrs Margie Hallinan, Ms
DeAnn Archie, Mr Roeland Weisfelt, Mr Mike Connolly, Mr Darren Crilly, Mr Dean
Stevens, Mrs Raechel Fletcher, Mr Pat Greene, Ms Summa Callaghan and Mr Reueben
Pather, for their support and attendance on the night.

It was also my pleasure to attend a Mini Concert on Wednesday night with the music students of Mrs Darlene
Ferguson. Darlene is one of those extremely talented women who appears to be able to play any instrument with
ease! She holds her mini concerts for her students to enable them to perform for their families – many are
undertaking their first public solo performance with all the nerves that that entails! It was really heartening to see the
confidence of the students grow even as they performed and I commend Mrs Ferguson on her ability to bring out the
best in the students. We were also treated to magical performances by her talented niece and children – a
remarkable family indeed!
On Wednesday morning of this week I attended a breakfast with Professor Ian Frazer as guest speaker. Many of you
would be aware of Professor Frazer as the 2006 Australian of the Year, and the person (with his team) who
discovered the cervical cancer vaccine. I thought you may be interested in the 4 top tips Professor Frazer had for
increasing our chances of a healthy and long life, which, as he said, are what you would expect.

I think you will agree that there are no real surprises there! The cost to our health care system as a result of these 4
factors not being adhered to are in the billions of dollars.
On Friday, we farewelled Debra Ward who has been our morning crossing supervisor. That is one of those jobs we
tend to take for granted but Deb has given us loyal & regular service for over 7 years and we wish her all the best.
On Monday we welcome Ann back from her trip overseas. The emails I have received suggest that she is having a
wonderful break.
On Wednesday night we have our annual Presentation Night and we look forward to celebrating the outstanding
achievements of our students over the course of 2014.

MOBILE PHONE RECYCLING PROGRAM
Australian Mobile Recycling was founded in September 2011. Their aim is to collect as many used and
unwanted mobile phones as possible. All mobile phones will be recycled for reuse, which means they
will be refurbished for resale. Handsets are restored to factory conditions and all Sim card and memory
cards are destroyed.
Any phones that are beyond repair will be broken down into their constituent parts and recycled by
Australian licensed recyclers.
For our recycling efforts our school will receive $3 for every mobile phone returned. Your contribution will not only raise
money for our school community but also help the environment in a positive way by reducing waste. BRING IN YOUR
OLD MOBILE PHONES and place in the box at the school office student counter.

College Notices to Parents/Guardians
Medial Alert!
At present in the College we have a student who is immunosuppressed, meaning that this student has a
lower immunity system and cannot fight infections in the ‘normal’ way. We have been advised by the Royal
Children’s Hospital that, as such, it is extremely important that we are aware of any other student who may
have measles, chicken pox and shingles, as the virus that causes these diseases could make this student
extremely unwell. We ask that if your child has one of these illnesses, to please contact the College.
Medicine is available that will lessen the side effect of exposure to such infections, but it does need to be
taken as soon as possible after contact with that illness.
Please be very aware that no student is at risk because of the presence of this student at the College.

P & F Funding for Representative Sports Teams:
If your son/ daughter has been selected in a regional, state or national team there is some funding available through
the P&F to assist with the cost of competing at this high level. In order to apply for this funding a copy of the
selection paperwork needs to be submitted to Miss Wust to fill out the P&F application paperwork . The latest date
that it can be submitted is Friday 24 October.

Should you wish to sell any good quality old uniforms, forms can be obtained from the shop or at Office
Reception. (All blazers must be dry cleaned)

Soaring Eagle Celebration Reunion 2014
Last Friday night we celebrated our 8th Soaring Eagles reunion at
the Irish Club in Brisbane. Over 100 past students and staff from
both Albion and Caboolture campuses gathered to catch up and
recall stories of the past.
We were pleased to see the 1974 alumni gather as a group, with
men travelling from as far as Perth and Mount Isa to catch up.
There were many stories retold, photos viewed and much laughter
to be heard.
On display this year were six Memorial Blazers with medals in
honour of past students Killed-in Action during WWII, Vietnam and
Afghanistan. Our thanks to Terry Fogarty who was instrumental in
helping to organize this and providing the military history for those
men honoured.
Thank you to the StC Past Student Executive Committee and StC Staff who assisted with
the lead-up and on the night of the event and a huge thank you to all the past students
who attended. Looking forward to doing it all again next year!

Concert Band Spectacular 2014
What a wonderful couple of days had at our Concert Band Spectacular on Friday 17 and Saturday 18 October. Another experience, which has left me feeling so proud to be at St Columban’s.
With 14 schools competing over the two days, it was a busy but successful event, one that has grown greatly this
year.
Friday was our Primary Concert Band section with 9 visiting Primary schools competing.
PRIMARY CONCERT BAND:
1st place ($1000): Banksia Beach State School
2nd Place ($500): Elimbah State School
3rd Place ($250): St Benedict’s Primary School Senior Band
Encouragement Award ($100): All Saints Albany Creek
Saturday was the Secondary Concert Band and Primary and Secondary schools Ensembles, with 11 performances.

1st place ($250): Banksia Beach State School
Encouragement Award ($100): Sunshine Beach State High School
SECONDARY SCHOOLS CONCERT BANDS:

Events like this would not be possibly without the wonderful supportive team at St Columban’s. Thanks must go to:

the lead up to the competition.



Steve Ruddy and his film students and Eugene Tasker’s sound team did such a fantastic job over the two
days.

Art Space
On 17 October Brisbane Catholic Education held a Prize for Art. With over 1400 hundred entries only 250 artworks
were selected as finalists for display at the Queensland Museum.
Two talented Year 11 students from St Columban’s College were named as finalists in this prize. Erin Allanson
exhibited her artwork “Fish Farm” and Courtney McNamara showcased her work “The Garden”. Both art students
are to be commended for this achievement as they are both very talented young artists.

Sport News
Senior AFL
Last Friday afternoon the St Columban's College senior AFL team won the QLD Independent Schools Competition
(North Division). This was the third year in a row we have played in the Grand Final and the second time we have
won the competition. The boys played exceptionally well, showing the Columban’s fighting spirit to come from behind
and hold onto a narrow 4-point win over Hillbrook Anglican College. The game was played at Everton Park and
Hillbrook had a huge hometown crowd. Our boys used that as motivation and silenced the crowd with a hard fought
win. Hayden Jeffrey and Liam Tozer captained the side brilliantly and Troy Hammond was awarded the best on
ground for the final. There were many other standout performances and each of the boys played a part in the win, it
was a real team effort. Big thanks must go to Mr Mark Lucas, Mr Damien Harvey, Mr John DeSmit, Mrs Sandra
Granger and Matthew Parker for their assistance throughout the season.
It is good to have the trophy back at StC!

St Columban’s was pleased to pull together a team to compete in the recent Sunshine Coast Secondary Schools
Surf Life Saving Carnival held at Mooloolaba beach. With many of our students actively involved with surf life
saving clubs such as Bribie Island and Alexandra Headland, we competed well and demonstrated College spirit
against stronger schools from the Sunshine Coast
and Gold Coast regions.
Stand out achievements were from Emma Lewis,
placing third in the 15 years beach sprint final and
Natasha Llora who battled tricky conditions to place
3rd in the open female ocean swim.
Congratulations to all involved on an enjoyable day,
we will be back bigger and better next year!

Are you a parent of a child with type 1 diabetes?
Every day, thousands of Australian children suffer the effects of type 1 diabetes and families struggle
with illness management and children’s behavioural and emotional adjustment.
Positive Parenting for Healthy Living is an adaptation of the successful Triple P- Positive Parenting
Program offering practical ideas and support for parents of children with type 1 diabetes. This
innovative group program is designed to help parents manage their child’s illness, assist children in coping with their
illness and emotions, and prevent and manage difficult child behaviour.
Over the next few months and for a limited time only, parents of 2-10 year old children with type 1 diabetes are able to
access Positive Parenting for Healthy Living Triple P as part of a University of Queensland research project. Parents
will be able to attend the program free of charge, and will be asked to complete 2 sets of assessment measures
(questionnaire and family observation) over a 6 month period, as part of the study. Contact Aditi Lohan on (07) 3346
