All Grades Weston PAC Meeting Join us for the second meeting of the Weston Parent Advisory Council (PAC) for Special Education on Friday, October 10 in the Case House large conference room from 910:50am. October is Dyslexia Awareness Month. This meeting will include a discussion of programs for students with language-based learning disabilities as well as a report on 2014 MCAS results for Weston students with special needs. In addition, the PAC will cosponsor a screening of the film The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia on October 16 at 7pm in the WHS Media Center, followed by a panel discussion. Weston School Committee Meeting The next Weston School Committee meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, October 14 at 7pm at Case House, 89 Wellesley Street. The tentative agenda includes WEEFC Proposals, Approval of FY16 Budget Guidelines, Discussion and Approval of Proposed Long Range Plan, Proposed High School Student Trip to Argentina, Field School and Case Complex Project Updates, and Discussion of the Superintendent Search Process and Plan. All members of the community are welcome. Weston Public Schools K-12 World Language Program Review The Weston Public Schools are participating in a K-12 World Language Program Review on October 7-9. An external visiting committee will review materials, observe classes and meet with students, faculty, administrators and parents. Parents are welcome to attend a forum today, Wednesday, October 8, from 8-8:45am at the HS Global Education Center (GEC) to provide feedback or may email their thoughts to Pamela Bator, Assistant Superintendent. BWMPO Parent Meeting The next BWMPO parent meeting will be held Thursday, October 16, 7pm, at the 12th Baptist Church, 160 Warren St, Roxbury. This is an important parent meeting. Weston High School 2014 Fruit Sale The Weston High School Black Student Union is again sponsoring a fruit sale to raise money to support the activities of the Weston High School Black Student Union and the Weston METCO Program. You can purchase a variety of Indian River fruit direct from Vero Beach, Florida. Friday, November 14, is the last day for orders. Fruit orders will arrive the week of December 15. Pre-School / Elementary School News Country School Grade Specific Coffees On Thursdays in October, Country School will host grade specific coffees. Woodland School Grade Level Forums The grade level forums will be held during the month of October in the Woodland Library. Children will be bussed from Field School to Regis College, with parent chaperones on the bus, and walk to back to Field, chaperoned, using the Wellesley Street sidewalks. Middle School / High School News Weston High School Class of 2015 Parent Discussion Group The Class of 2015 Parent Discussion Group will kick off Senior year with a meeting at Beth Keane's house (37 Juniper Road) on Thursday, October 9 at 9:30am. Weston High School PTO Principal's Coffee Join Anthony Parker for a Principal's Coffee and open discussion about current high school issues on Tuesday, October 14. Weston High School Math Tutoring Program for Middle School A group of mathematically talented Weston High School students are offering volunteer tutoring sessions to Weston Middle School students. Registration is currently open. Sessions will take place at the Middle School Monday-Thursday from 3-6pm. To learn more about the program, please visit the website. To register your student, please contact Kimia Shajii. Youth Sporting Activities Weston Skating Club Registration has begun for the 2014-2015 Weston Skating Club season. Learn to Skate programs will begin on Saturday, November 15 and Family Skating on Sundays from 46pm will start on November 16. Men's Hockey, Women's Hockey, and Girls' Hockey programs are also available. Register online. Weston Youth Lacrosse WYL Registration opens October 15 and spaces will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. Spaces are limited and once filled, registration will close. Community News Girl Scout Daisy Registration Join us for the Daisy Kindergarten and Grade 1 parents-only Orientation & Information Session Thursday, October 9, with Kristy Watkins, Beverly Dillaway and GS Council staff, from 7-8pm at Weston Scout House, 86 School Street. Weston High School Pumpkin Festival Saturday, October 18 is the 9th annual WHS Pumpkin Festival on the Town Green from 12-4pm (rain date Sunday, October 19). There will be great food, live music, a silent auction, Bonaparte the magician at 2:30pm, pumpkin carving, face painting, and lots of games and activities for all! All profits from this event will go to Camp Sunshine, a retreat for children with life threatening illnesses and their families. Click here for more information. OPEN REHEARSAL is a collection of a variety of exciting scenes from published plays being performed by 40 students in grades 6, 7, and 8. Shows are in the Amy Potter Center at the Weston Middle School, Friday, October 24 at 3pm and 7pm, and Saturday, October 25 at 5pm. All tickets are $5.00 and are sold at the door before the shows. Weston-Wayland Assemblies (AKA 5th Grade Ballroom Dancing) The Weston-Wayland Assemblies are on Wednesdays for the 2014-2015 year from 4:155:15pm at St. Julia Parish in Weston. Please note the correct dates are as follows, as two were printed incorrectly on the invitation: November 5, 19; December 3, 17; January 7, 21, 28; February 4, 25. March 11, 2015 is the make-up date in the event a class is cancelled. WCCA Birthday Wishes Drive The Weston Community Children's Association (WCCA) is hosting a donation drive now through October 10 to benefit Birthday Wishes, a non-profit organization which provides birthday parties to homeless children. Birthday Wishes gladly accepts donations of party goods as well as unwrapped birthday gifts for children. Please note that all items must be new. Donations may be dropped off at the collection bin at the Weston Community Center at 20 Alphabet Lane in Weston. Visit WCCA for more information. WCCA Fourth Annual Mini Marathon Join us at the Weston High School track for the Weston Community Children's Association (WCCA) Fourth Annual Mini Marathon on Saturday, October 18 (rain date Sunday, October 19). Registration begins at 8am; race from 8:30-10am. This event is open to Pre-K through 3rd grade. Register online. All fundraising to benefit the Blue Hill Boys and Girls Club of Boston. Lamson Park 'Park Hop' The Friends of Lamson Park have planned a "Park Hop" to gather input for the new playground to be built at Lamson Park in early 2015. Please join us as we "test" possible equipment by observing our children play at three area parks on Monday, October 13 (Columbus Day): Esplanade Playspace, Boston 10-10:40am, Grimmons Park, Somerville 11-11:30am, Cambridge Commons, Cambridge 11:45-12:15pm. We encourage residents to visit the parks and provide feedback on various equipment by contacting us. October is National Stamp Collecting Month The Spellman Museum of Stamps & Postal History at Regis College is celebrating this month with several special exhibits including "The Alvin Research Sub; The Little Sub that Could - 50 Years" and "Springfield USA: The Simpsons on Stamps."
