On a Journey of Faith
28th Sunday of Ordinary Time 12th October 2014
World Mission Sunday
FOOD AND DRINK FOR THE JOURNEY
“The Lord of hosts will provide for all peoples, a banquet of rich
food and choice wines, juicy, rich food and pure, choice wines”.
That’s what the first reading tells us today. The Lord gives
everyone an invitation to enter the Kingdom of heaven, but we
must choose whether we accept the invitation or turn away from
His loving offer. However, there are some people who refuse the
offer. Then there are others, whose love for God expresses itself
in eagerness to do good whenever they can. They are the ones
who “live in the house of the Lord,” preferring love, forgiveness
and equality. If we accept the invitation then we must make the
effort to wear the right clothes. Not the latest fashion trends that
come and go, but the beautiful clothes of forgiveness, patience,
love, justice and peace – not rags of jealousy, gossip,
selfishness, hatefulness etc! Today’s beautiful Psalm tells us
that the Lord will help and guide us on the right path. He will lead
us safely home to the Kingdom of Heaven –and what a banquet
awaits for those who follow Him!

PONDER
As I stumble through this life
help me to create more laughter than tears,
spread more joy than despair. Never let me
become so indifferent that I will fail to see the
wonder in the eyes of a child, or the twinkle
in the eyes of the aged. Never let me forget
that my total effort is to try and love as the Lord does. And in
my final moment, may I hear Him whisper, 'When you made
My people smile, you made Me smile.”
WORLD MISSION SUNDAY
Today is World Mission Sunday. A day when
Catholics all over the world are united in
prayer and support. We share in the work of
the missionaries and the young churches as they share
their faith and give life, often in difficult and
dangerous circumstances.
Pope Francis says:
Dear brothers and sisters, on this World Mission Day my thoughts
turn to all the local Churches. Let us not be robbed of the joy of
evangelization! I invite you to immerse yourself in the joy of the
Gospel and nurture a love that can light up your vocation and your
mission. I urge each of you to recall, as if you were making an
interior pilgrimage, that “first love” with which the Lord Jesus Christ
warmed your heart, not for the sake of nostalgia but in order to
persevere in joy. Let us pray through the intercession of Mary, the
model of humble and joyful evangelization, that the Church may
become a welcoming home, a mother for all peoples and the source
of rebirth for our world.

Walking with Pope Francis
The Lord truly enjoys talking with
His people; the preacher should strive
to communicate that same
enjoyment to his listeners’ (from his
letter to us ‘the Joy of the Gospel’)
We join Pope Francis in his prayer intentions for the
month of October:
Peace – That the Lord may grant peace to those parts of
the world most battered by war and violence
World Mission – That World Mission Day may rekindle in
every believer, zeal for carrying the Gospel into all the
world
