There are two consistent themes in these scriptures: 1) the Israelites complained constantly about everything, and, 2) God provided, forgave, and loved them despite their complaining spirit. I have often said that it is a good thing that I wasn’t in charge because I would not have been nearly as patient as God was with them. “A young Catholic priest decided to enter a monastery. He joined one particularly strict sect. The head monk told him, at his indoctrination, that they were sworn to TOTAL silence. They could not speak one word at all. However, every ten years, they would be permitted to speak two words. After 10 years of total silence, the head monk indicated it was now time for him to speak his two words. The monk said, “Bed hard!” And then he resumed his silent study and work. Another 10 years passed and the head monk again indicated it was time for him to speak his two words. The monk said, “Food bad!” And then he resumed his silent study and work. OFFICE HOURS Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM till 1:00 PM Another 10 years passed and the head monk again indicated it was time for him to speak his two words. The monk said, “I quit!” The head monk shook his head and said, “I knew this was coming. You’ve done nothing but complain for the past 30 years!” The story is a humorous one, yet, it got me to thinking about my conversations with God through prayer. Would God see me as one who did nothing but complain in all our years together? Would I be hurt and resentful of the things that I did not have or thankful for the things I do have? Would I hold myself up before God with the same expectations/standards that I hold up for others when I complain about them? Would I be as quick to ask for forgiveness and as I am to believe that others owe me an apology? In short, do I act like the post exile Israelites and the young priest and mostly complain to God? I hope not, but I have my moments. I am guessing that you do to. Perhaps I should practice the old “art” of saying at least three nice/thankful/gentle/loving/praising things before I would complain about anything. I have found over the years that when I put this into practice, by time I get to my complaints, they seem trivial in comparison to goodness I have received. Maybe you might want to practice that as well. Nevertheless, like the Israelites before me, God will be patient, forgiving, and loving toward me. Thanks be to God! ~~Scott 2701 Poplar Street • Terre Haute, IN 47803 • 812/234-0776 • email [email protected] • www.umcmemorial.com Covered in the Rabbi’s Dust STORY TIME IN THE LIBRARY Sunday, October 19th during BOTH Services EVERY ONE INVITED! We are going “Batty” for Reading in October We will be reading A Bat Named Belinda by Peggy Cobb in First Service. A “bat” book about living, loving and understanding. We will read Stellaluna by Janell Cannon in Second Service. A baby bat is raised like a bird until she is found by her mother. Is our Church Language Obsolete? Foreign? Too Complicated? Or, is it just a traditional habit? Have we forgotten how to share our Faith, our Story, our God? Youth....well, not just youth! My Aunt (she's in her 60's) use these "shortcut phrases" pictured above. How many of them do YOU know? When you communicate with others (Facebook, Twitter, Snapchap, Handwritten Letters, or Verbal Conversation), how many of these phrases do you use - know - or recognize? ~Yes, I still write handwritten letters...it's not too foreign a concept~ What about words like: Faith, Saved, Confirmed, Baptize, Intinction, Holy Communion/Eucharist, Liturgy, Invocation, Acolyte, Advent, Lent, Kingdomtide, Parament, Seminary, Theological, Holy, Introit, Narthex, Sacristy.... what are some other words we use in our Faith life (at church/in worship) that need more explanation or a different word or words to help others understand this "Secret Society", this "Country Club", this "Exclusive Group"? I know we don't mean to be exclusive....or do we? We want moms with new babies to stay away from worship if their babies can't stop crying for 45 minutes. We want people to dress is 3 piece suits or frilly dresses with petticoats. We want one type of worship. After all, Jesus said, "Silent Worship with an Organ and no children is the way to honor me." Because Church is about building relationships, let's work on that together this Fall. Let's join in the nurturing of the babies and children. Let us work on being MORE welcoming. Let us open our hearts to experience God in new and different ways, that ALL people feel connected in this Faith Family we call Memorial. Let us communicate, explain, ask questions, and continue our Spiritual, Enthusiastic, Alive message and work in this world. Rev. Chiyona Bourne 812-917-4303 [email protected] May you be covered in the dust of THE Rabbi, Jesus. Summer Camping 2015 During July, Rev. Chiyona attended Summer Camp with Middle Schoolers at Camp Adventure in Pierceton, Indiana. After talks with the Mission Committee over the last year and Rev. Chiyona’s working with Mallory Manning and Youth this coming year (2014-2015), the Committee would like to building a 2015 Camp Scholarship fund. Middle School students (going into 6, 7, 8 grades) are the current target. The camp would be held at InDiCoSo in the Bloomington, Indiana area. Building this Scholarship Camping fund is a way to help our Youth experience Camp… including Worship in a style that celebrates youth; fellowship with other faith-building youth; and a week of fun outdoor activities that encourage teamwork, building self-confidence, and digging deeper into their faith. Rev. Chiyona volunteered to go with these youth to Camp in 2015. Will your youth take a risk next summer? Will your youth take a chance? Will you support building a camp scholarship fund for youth from Memorial? Contact Rev. Chiyona or the Mission Committee for more information. Page 2 This month the children will be checking out a mystery “brown bag” of books. Each bag will have a mixed genre, a special note and a super prize awaiting them for November. Are YOU Interested In A Bookish Craft Class? The Library will be conducting two " " Bookish Craft Classes this fall. The first class will be TUESDAY, OCTOBER 21ST, 5:30 -7:00 All book crafts are made with Library related items such as; old and re-purposed books, paper, lettering and other items. This class is free and you need to bring nothing. We will be making pumpkins, a small fall decorative book, and the children who come can make corner bookmarks. I will have a sign-up table in the Narthex and a display with items we will be making in the next two months. Trunk or Treat! The Library (Mechelle) will be handing out Candy and Bookmarks during Trunk or Treat on Sunday, October 26th. See you then! Have You Visited Your Library Recently? This summer the Library Committee has worked diligently in focusing on creating one of the most expansive and up to date collections of religious, educational and literary resources a Christian Library can hold. We currently have 4,000 resources and grow daily. Thanks, due to many of those who donate. Our library is, and continues to be one of the largest Christian libraries in Indiana. Library hours are Monday thru Friday 9 am-1 pm. We are open Sunday during church services. Almost everyone is in the library computer system. So please sign out UNDER your name and not someone else. If you are unsure, simply put your phone number with your name. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU SIGN YOUR NAME ON THE CHECK OUT CARD! Books get checked out for 30 days. If you need to renew just let us know. THE MOVIES ONLY GET A WEEK. The series movies get a longer time period. Visit your library. See what we have and be surprised. Parent’s, we have a huge selection of educational books. If your student needs supplemental material we probably have it in our library. ~AND~ The Library LOVES those who donate books. We would like to thank the following for graciously giving to our collection: Janet Raines --Poetry Collection in Memory of her Mother, Alice Raines Page 11 An Invitation from United Methodist Women- You Must Come! Another season of Kids Hope mentoring is now underway at Sugar Grove Elementary School, and faces from Memorial are everywhere! Some of the partnerships are new, as some of our young Kids Hope friends have moved to other schools. Some of our mentors are taking a break or pursuing other projects this year. But other relationships have picked up right where they left off last spring, and it is hard to tell who is happier to see who! One of the comments we are hearing over and over, not just from the kids but the teachers and principal is, “We are so happy to have you back!” As teachers become busier trying to teach all the things the state of Indiana requires they have less time to spend individually with the children who need it most. That’s why programs like Kids Hope USA are more important than ever; they reach the kids who need that one-on-one attention, and it makes a huge difference in their performance in the classroom. We see it every day! The day we’ve been waiting for has arrived. Our Tanzanian Mission Team will be reporting to us this Sunday, October 5th, and they have quite a story to tell. They will be a part of the morning services. Twiga (Means giraffe in Swahili) will be at the sanctuary door to greet you. After the service, take a lunch break and come back at 2:00 pm. There will be much more for them to share with us, including the many treasures they’ve brought back. Dessert (PIE) will be served by the UMW. This promises to be a delightful afternoon. We hope that you will be a part of this time of enlightenment and fellowship. Are you GETTING OLDER? Saturday, November 8 from 10 am to 12 noon, we will be talking about a NEW MINISTRY coming to Memorial Church in 2015! Who is "We"? That's Caitlin Manning and Brandie Thomas! What is this "New Ministry"? -- Well, at Annual Conference 2014, All Indiana United Methodist Churches were asked to think of something NEW they could do for God, for people. For some churches, that was an additional worship service. For other churches, it was a regular outreach meal. Well, we thought and thought about Memorial. We already have 2 services. We already serve in missions (Local, Regional, Global). We already GIVE to missions (THANK YOU!). What else can we do? Where can we grow? Worship was the answer. How? We already have Chancel Choir, PrayZ Team, Handbells, Children's Choir, and great participation for special music (offering). Caitlin and Brandie will be leading a LITURGICAL DANCE, Praise Dance, Interpretive Dance - WORSHIPFUL DANCE program at Memorial. We have received a small grant from the Indiana Conference Offices to pilot this program at Memorial. This program is for all ages 3 years old to 103! After all, dancing is just glorified walking! Women, men, boys, and girls, are welcomed to join in to help present God through stories, music, scripture, and movement. Put Saturday November 8 on your Calendars: 10am - 12 noon. Let's get excited about moving with God in 2015! CONFIRMATION ORIENTATION Confirmation 2014-2015 is coming just around the corner. There will be a confirmation orientation on Sunday, October 19th at 10:00 (during the Sunday School hour) with both confirmands and their parents. The purpose of this orientation is to let everyone know the timeline for confirmation, requirements, and to find a date that will work out the best for all involved. If for any reason you cannot attend but are planning to be a part of Confirmation 2014-2015, then please contact Rev. Johnson or Rev. Bourne before that meeting. Confirmation is a series of studies to prepare young folks for responsible church membership and a solid understanding of the role of faith in life. Confirmation is for any youth grades 7 thru 12. Part of the Confirmation Experience will be field trips to worship services of different faiths with the opportunity to ask questions and see the variety of ways in which people worship the same God. Confirmation can be a “rite of passage” in one’s life and one, which needs to be taken seriously. If you have further questions, please feel free to ask Rev. Johnson or Rev. Bourne. Page 8 The IOP Mission Team will share their Tanzanian experiences as they are featured in both services on Sunday, October 5. In addition, they are invited guests of the UMW for a 2 pm presentation that afternoon. Come celebrate and learn about the IOP Mission trip from last June. Refreshments will be served at the afternoon session. Africa University is the focus of the Indiana Conference for the next three years. The MUMC Missions Committee is supporting Bishop Coyner’s recommendation of $1000 donated by MUMC to Africa University for each of the next three years – 2014, 2015, & 2016. The committee has recommended that this year’s pledge be met with excess proceeds from the Jonah Fish Fry not needed by the IOP Mission Trip. Rev. Chiyona has been appointed by Bishop Coyner as a member of the Indiana Conference delegation to Africa University. In addition, he has underwritten $3000 of the expenses of this trip. However, an additional $2000 is required. The Mission Committee has pledged that she will not have to expend personal funds for this trip; the details of this funding have not been completed. A safety railing has been installed by Don Brown on the balcony of 14th & Chestnut Community Center. The costs of this project, $800, have been underwritten by the Christmas in July account of 2nd Mile Giving. The Advent offering will be directed to 14th & Chestnut again this year. The offering will be received during November and December. Mission Out-reach suggestions from the congregation are always welcomed. Please direct your suggestions to Rev. Chiyona or Dave Voltmer.
