I am delighted to welcome you to the 2014 Chilean Wine Fair in

the west—make Chile a veritable agricultural island. Together
they help maintain healthy conditions and protect vineyards
against pests and disease. And with a geography as diverse as
Chile’s, you can be sure that the climate will have terrific variation.
Chile has history of growing vines that goes more than 450 years
back. Wine has been present in our territory since the arrival of
the Spanish conquerors, allowing a broad group of people to carry
and pass down the skills of winemaking and working in the vineyard. In recent decades, the Chilean wine industry has incorporated the latest available technologies in order to make significant
efforts not only to improve processes, but also the manual labour
involved in them. Moreover Chilean winemakers have been at the
forefront of innovation in winemaking across our country, as I
hope you will discover through the range and variety of styles you

Alle områder
Inden for de seneste år er der sket en udvikling og en udvidelse
af Chiles vinområder. I de ”gamle dage” var landet inddelt og navngivet efter de dale, som gik på tværs fra Stillehavet og ind i landet
og hele Chiles vinproduktion lå i midten af det lange land: fra
Aconcagua Valley i nord til Itata Valley i syd.
Der var imidlertid mange vinmagere med mod på at prøve nye områder og der var masser af muligheder for at udvide i det lange
land, så nye områder blev etableret mod både nord og syd: fra
Elqui Valley i nord til Bio bio og Malleco i syd.
Men ud over disse forholdsvis nye områder er endnu flere ved at
udvikle sig: Huasco, Alto Elqui, Alto Cachapoal – som navnene på
de to sidste antyder, ligger disse områder i højden. Jo højere man
kravler op mod de sneklædte tinder, jo længere er solen om at
kommer over de østlige tinder, men kompenserer for sin sene ankomst med en intensitet, som den høje beliggenhed giver. Vinde
blæser op og ned af bjergsiderne i løbet af dagen, og der er store
temperatursvingninger mellem dag og nat. Dette er lige hvad en
drue som f.eks Cabernet Sauvignon kan lide, og der bliver eksperimenteret med druesorter, som normalt hører et koldere klima
til som f.eks Sauvignon Blanc og Pinot Noir.

fra hinanden, er landet nu også delt op på langs i tre zoner
(se kort side 7):

Calcu’s appeal is thus “Rediscovering Colchagua”.
“Calcu” means magician in the local Mapuche Indian language,
Mapudungun, whilst our label depicts a bull that was the inspiration of a talented young contemporary artist who was invited to
illustrate an image of our agricultural heritage. Calcu wines are
exuberant, with unrestrained possibilities through a natural
winemaking process that capture the expression of the Valley’s
terroir characterized by its freshness, very good fruit upfront,
finesse and elegance.

best red wines in The New World. After an in-depth analysis he
found a site at the foot of the Andes, in the Maipo River Valley,
where the excellent combination of climate, soil and altitude combined perfectly to produce wines with character, unique identity
and extraordinary quality.
The objective set by Viña El Principal is to preserve unalterably
the natural qualities of its vineyards, regardless of passing tendencies and modes, to transform its wines into the most genuine
and pure expression of the terroir from which they originate.
Viña El Principal’s oenology develops starting with the vineyards.
The wines are exclusively processed with grapes grown on the
lands, where the vineyards are continually studied as to their physiology and their relation to the terroir, in order to identify and
perfect the best plots and thus obtain top quality raw material.
Harvesting is carried out entirely by hand, with controlled production and the sorting of clusters both in the field and later in the
wine cellars. This is followed by a careful traditional Bordeaux vinification process and ageing in French oak, resulting in the inimitable character of these wines capable of reflecting the
elegance and identity of the terroir.

There are many elements that take part in the elaboration of a
high quality wine, but certainly one of the most important factors
are the people behind the wine. ENCIERRA belongs to the Eyzaguirre Echeñique family, founders of VIÑA LOS VASCOS, wine
producers for more than five generations at their property in Peralillo, Colchagua Valley. In 1996, the Eyzaguirre Echeñique family
sold its participation in VIÑA LOS VASCOS but kept property over
the main house and part of the estate, preserving one hundred
privileged hectares planted primarily with Cabernet Sauvignon,
Merlot, Carmenère, Syrah and some Petit Verdot.
The family was convinced that the key to produce a unique and
expressive wine was to choose the best grapes of their own terroir. The Eyzaguirre-Echenique family and their team of experts
believe that the key to quality wine production lies in the soil. For
this reason, they are committed to nurturing their land with state
of the art technology and pursuing varietals that have maximum
potential. In 2000, the family’s vision for ENCIERRA became reality as they released their first vintage of Encierra “Vineyard Reserve”, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Carmenère, Merlot,
and Petit Verdot.

The history of Montes dates back to 1987 when Aurelio Montes and Douglas Murray, both highly experienced wine professionals, decided to realize their dream of crafting Chilean wines a quantum-leap higher in quality
than the standards of the time under sustainable practices. In 1988, they
joined up with the Alfredo Vidaurre and Pedro Grand, who brought their
own complementary skills and expertise to the venture. And thus Montes
was born.
Montes Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon 1987, the first ‘premium’ wine to be
exported from Chile, was a mould-breaking, a brand synonymous with premium quality from Chile and a wine that immediately raised the bar for
other Chilean producers. Concentrated, complex and stylish, its success
was immediate, and it demonstrated that we had chosen the correct path,
the one that we had hoped for from the beginning, focusing on the standards expected by international markets. Our cherished Alphas Chardonnay, Merlot and Syrah were natural additions to the range, soon followed
by the first Chilean ‘Ultra-Premium’ Montes Alpha ‘M’ (in classic Bordeaux
style); Montes Folly 2000 (pure Syrah, with very limited production) and
lastly, Purple Angel (92% Carmenère), launched in 2005.

Leyda Winery, a branch from San Pedro, has been a pioneer in the development of cold climate vineyards, creating a new wine region in Chile.
Leyda Valley was dry land before Leyda Winery invested in an 8 km – long
aqueduct, channeling water from the Maipo River to irrigate the fields.
In 1998, Leyda Winery was the first one in the Valley to plant grapes, and
now has 190 hectares cultivated.
Leyda launched its first wine and registered the trademark in 2001. At
that time, the designation was attributed to Aconcagua Valley. However,
the climatic differences due to coastal influences as well as a different
soil profile resulted in a new style of wine compared to those produced in
Aconcagua Valley. Henceforth, Leyda Winery requested the creation of a
new designation of origin, namely Leyda Valley, which became officially
recognized as of May 2002.
Leyda is named after a former train station. Despite being burnt to the
ground in a fire in 1983, the architecture is immortalized in the corporate
image of the Winery.

Among its facilities located in the heart of the city of Santiago, the colonial-style house and underground cellar stand out. Built by the French architect Emile Doreyé using bricks and a mixture of lime and egg whites
known as 'cal y canto', they were declared a national monument in 1973.
With over 2,000 hectares located in Chile's main winegrowing valleys,
Santa Carolina produces wines of great personality and complexity that
seek to achieve the greatest terroir and fruit expression. Its extensive
portfolio offers excellent-quality wines in all price segments. In 2012,
Viña Santa Carolina initiated a new era with the reopening of its facilities,
which were severely damaged by the great earthquake that shook a large
portion of the country in 2010, surrounding them with a renovated park
that has become a green lung for the city.
Santa Carolina has been an active participant in Chile's winegrowing development, contributing its tradition, history and heritage. It is a living trademark in constant evolution, always at the forefront, bearing a LIVING
HERITAGE.
