A Serious Moment and the Gift of Life
It seems that this week the weather has taken a definite turn towards fall and winter and away from
the halcyon days of summer. I who like being cold, have even risked opening my windows a few
nights to let the cold, fresh autumn air into the house. The
clouds in the sky are no longer the billowy summer white,
but are flattening out into the slate of winter. The days are
shorter and last week we saw the last after 7:00 p.m.
sunset until March 8, 2015. We are entering into a serious
time of year with a difficult and perhaps disappointing
harvest before us. The Church, too, has turned away from
the call to discipleship of Ordinary Time and to the
consideration of the meaning of death, judgment and
God’s plans for us to live with him forever.
Today’s first reading and Gospel are parables about how
the choices we make now will shape our eternity. In the beautiful lament of the vineyard owner for
the ruin of his vineyard we hear God’s longing for us to accept his love, to be cared for in his mercy
and to embraced by his life-giving power. The melancholy of this passage is a moving expression of
God’s mourning over his rejected offer of salvation, care, mercy and life. In a simple and almost too
obvious parable, Jesus leads us into a confrontation with our own hard-hearted rejection of God’s
merciful desire to work by our side in transforming our lives and the life of the world.
Today we observe Respect Life Sunday, and at the heart of our observance is the simple and
undeniable truth that God’s desire for us is life. God shares his life with us and calls us to live day
after day in grateful recognition of that gift. We are called to do all we can to create a society, culture
and world that affirm the life God has given us. Our words, actions and choices can embrace or shun
this gift, and we are called to embrace it with all its challenges and difficulties. We rejoice in its
varied forms, its sorrows and joys, its challenges and triumphs, its hidden, messy and yet glorious
reality. Life is an eternal gift, granted by a loving God to us. It is a confusing, maddening,
cacophonous, tumultuous, mysterious and joyful mystery to be experienced with wonder and awe.
At this rather serious moment of the year we may ask, how we can grasp and live this gift. St. Paul
sums it up quite eloquently in the end of his letter to the Philippians, “Finally, brothers and sisters,
whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely,
whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about
these things. Keep on doing what you have learned and received and heard and seen in me. Then the
God of peace will be with you.”

THE RE CONNECTION
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou
amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy
Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our
death. Amen. Thank you…the world needed that! Please feel free
to say another fifty-three with some Pater Nosters and Glorias
sprinkled in, and nestled lovingly between an Apostle’s Creed and a
Hail Holy Queen for our beloved RE Program…the kiddos and
catechists need that! 
ST. PIUS X MOTHERS' GROUP - SATURDAY, OCTOBER 11:
The 10 Habits of Happy Catholic Mothers - Workshop Edition! As
moms, we're called to a deeper purpose. However, many moms
undervalue themselves, fall prey to competition and fail to take time
with God. They aren't happy and live in fear of not being "good
enough." Meg Meeker, Catholic writer and pediatrician provides
ways to become a happier mom in her book The 10 Habits of Happy
Mothers. Dr. Meeker wrote the book for all moms of all faiths.
Looking at data collected from interviews with happy moms, those
habits will be addressed with the Catholic mother in mind. Reading
the book is not a prerequisite! After discussing each habit,
participants will work on their Happiness Toolkit, a workbook
designed to make those habits stick. We will pray a rosary at
9:00 a.m. in the church. Our meeting will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the
lower level meeting room. All women of the Area Faith Community
are welcome to attend! For more information, contact Sue Mielke at
320-395-2571.
A GENTLE REMINDER ABOUT PARKING: Please remember
that parking is allowed only in the striped areas of the parking lot.
The open lane from the entrance around the oval and past the school
and church to the exit is an emergency lane, and we ask that you do
not park in those areas. We understand that this may mean walking a
little further than you would prefer, but your cooperation keeps us all
safe in case of an emergency. Remember that there are some spaces
in the lower level parking lot also.

“PAVING THE WAY WITH PRAYER” SCHOOL
MARATHON UPDATE: We ask all parishioners to please make a
donation to this fundraiser that provides 100% profit to our school.
This year our goal is $25,000. As of October 2 we have collected
$9,574.01! We thank everyone who has already made a donation to
our marathon. Last weekend we collected $1,971.25 during the
weekend Masses which means our Knights of Columbus will match
$1,000 of this amount! Thank you! Thank you! We also thank
Fr. Tony for his donation of a Mexican dinner for 12 people. The
winning bid was $800! Thank you to those who donated toward this
dinner. A special thanks to Kathy Krone for leading this auction after
Mass.
After weeks of preparation and hard work by our parents, students,
HandS Advisory Association members, and Knights of Columbus,
we completed our Marathon walk on Friday, October 3, 2014. We
thank everyone in the parish for keeping us in your prayers and for
making a donation to help support this big fundraiser. The Marathon
total will be announced soon. The prayer intention display will be in
the Gathering Space for the remainder of the school year.

Area Faith Community News
LIVING ROSARY NEXT SUNDAY: The St. John Paul II Area
Faith Community’s annual Living Rosary celebration will be next
Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at the Church of St. Pius X in Glencoe.
Representatives from each parish will help us to pray for the bishops
gathered in Rome for the Synod on the Gospel of the Family, for
Vocations and for the needs of our parishes and area faith
community. Please make plans to join us for this celebration.
ATTENTION ALL VOLUNTEERS WITH CHILDREN AND
YOUTH: Volunteers with children and youth who have not
completed their annual on-line training are now out of compliance
with diocesan and parish policy for working with young people.
Celia Knoll or Nancy Neumann will be contacting you again to
remind and encourage you to complete your training. Remember that
in order to volunteer with children or young people you must be
current in your training.
RETURN TO REGULAR MASS SCHEDULE: Next Sunday we
will return to our regular Mass schedule at Holy Family & St. Pius X.
HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS TO MEET WITH FR. TONY: High
school seniors who will be participating in religious education this
year will have an organizational meeting in Fr. Tony’s office at
St. Pius X on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. They will plan their
topics and meeting dates for the year. We look forward to seeing you
at the meeting.

AND ST. PIUS X: The next Baptismal preparation session for
parents of Holy Family and St. Pius X will be on Saturday,
October 11 at 9:00 a.m. in the parish library at St. Pius X. Those of
you hoping to baptize between that date and the end of January
should plan to attend. It is not too early to attend the session when
you are expecting.
ARE YOU INTERESTED IN BEING A CATHOLIC? Have you
thought about becoming Catholic and don’t know the next step? If so,
we invite you to join the RCIA process. Those of you from Silver
Lake or Glencoe will meet on Sunday, October 12 at 3:00 p.m. at the

SECOND COLLECTION FOR NATIONAL COUNCIL OF
CATHOLIC WOMEN NEXT SUNDAY: Next Sunday,
October 12, we will observe Council of Catholic Women
Recognition Sunday. As part of our recognition we will take up a
second collection for the work of the National Council of Catholic
Women. This collection is part of their “We are One!” campaign. We
ask that every woman, and for that matter every person, make at least
a $1.00 donation to this collection. Your donation will help the
NCCW to further their mission. As their motto for the campaign
states the NCCW is, “United in one faith; combined for effectiveness,
joined in action, organized to serve, connected to succeed, bonded by
friendship and unified in our mission.” Please recognize the great
contribution the CCW makes to our parishes by your participation in
this collection.
FUNERAL PLANNING WORKSHOP: The St. John Paul II Area
Faith Community will be offering a funeral planning workshop in the
lower level of the Church of the Holy Family on Monday,
October 13, at 7:00 p.m. Fr. Tony will present on planning the funeral
liturgy, local funeral directors will be present to talk about funeral
planning and monument companies will be present also. We will talk
about cemetery rules and regulations also. Please join us to think
about how we might prepare funerals for our loved ones or for
ourselves.
SENIOR HIGH YOUTH RALLY: The Diocesan Senior High
Youth Rally for 9-12 graders will be held at New Ulm on Sunday,
October 26. The schedule for the day includes lunch, skits and
mixers provided by the Diocesan Youth Council and NET Team,
keynote speaker Mike Sweeney of the Kansas City Royals and
Catholic band, “The Thirsting”. It’s a great day for fun and
fellowship and to grow in your faith. Talk to a few friends and see if
you can get a group to go. Permission slips will be handed out at RE
Classes and in school. Money and slips are due to Mrs. Kahle by
Wednesday, October 15.
ONE WARM COAT: Common Cup Ministries, which our parishes
support, will begin its annual Coats for Kids drive this week. If you
have a clean and in good shape winter coat, hats, mittens or gloves to
donate, please leave them in the box in the back of church at Holy

Silver Lake and in the box in the gathering area at St. Pius X in
