First call your primary physicians office. It may be a long shot, and they may not be able to squeeze you in, but it is a good place to start. At least they do know at that time, you have an issue going on. If they cannot see you, you need to determine which is the best place to go given your current situation. Emergency Room: Best choice if situation is life threatening. Open 24/7. Medical and surgical specialists are available. Necessary for chest pain, signs of stroke, (facial drooping, limb weakness, loss of speech), head trauma, severe bleeding, severe allergic reactions and loss of consciousness. Urgent Care Center: Open on Weekends, and evenings; Appropriate for minor cuts, flu, sinusitis, minor sprains and abrasions, sore throats etc. Usually have one physician and/or nurse practitioner. Most have labs and onsite x-ray machines. Retail Clinics: Non life threatening ailments. These clinics treat colds, flu, sinus issues, and urinary tract infections. They may also offer vaccinations. They usually only treat adults. (CVS and Target are examples.) Check list for a walk in clinic: Take a list of your current medications (Rx and over the counter). Confirm that you have a “bacterial infection” if the doctor wants to prescribe an antibiotic Don’t feel pressured to get an Rx filled at the place of service. You can seek your own. If you have a doctor, make sure he or she gets a record of the visit. The nurse or physician should ask who your provider is; send them a copy of your reports for your medical records. ***Prior to an illness or emergency, it is smart to call the urgent care and retail care center in your community, so they can explain to you what they treat, and what they DO NOT treat. It is best you document this information for your future use. August 2014 Consumer Reports on Health WCCOA Cholesterol Screening - Comprehensive Cholesterol Screening for anyone who is a resident of Wood County and over 25 years of age. What an outpouring of wonderful people we have in Wood County! Hearts have been opening and many of you are helping out at several of the Wood County Senior Center sites. In Bowling Green, we have added Joe and Sharon McIntyre, Bev Meyer, and Mary Hansen on HDM routes in trying to create a much needed, new, in-town route. Perrysburg Area Senior Center is losing a Home Delivered Meal volunteer, Ron Stewart and we will need to fill his spot. Although we have added Becky Lucas, Brittany Vanaman, and Barbara Schwickrath to the HDM Volunteer roles in North Baltimore, we are still shy of help at this location. To those who have joined the ranks of “Awesome Volunteers”, we extend many “thanks” for joining our “family” to help aid the older adults in our County! I, personally, am extremely proud of the many volunteers who help this Agency with their mission of keeping older adults in their homes for as long as possible. However, we DO need volunteers at several Donations other locations. Although there is no senior center In Memory of Margaret Davis Davis Family Trust location in the WESTON area, we are in desperate need In Memory of Lee Bressler Sheryl Pike of Home Delivered Meal drivers so we can start a route Kitchen Fund Walbridge VFW#9963 in that location. This need has come about due to the he large number of clients in that area. Friends of the Wood County Committee on Aging are reminded that for many years the Endowment Fund has been the recipient of gifts to honor and memorialize friends and relatives. Over the past several years, the generous gifts of community organizations, families, and individuals, augmented by money from the Endowment Fund, were directed to the Kitchen Project. That success of the project has assured that the WCCOA will be able to continue to provide congregate and home delivered meals to a growing number of older adults in Wood County. As in the past, WCCOA welcomes gifts to the Endowment Fund to memorialize family members and to honor people in the WCCOA network of volunteers and professionals in the Wood County Community.
