Sudden and severe headaches require immediate evaluation. Headaches that require immediate attention are rare, but failure to treat them can be fatal. A sudden crushing headache in adults older than 50 who have no history of headaches can be a sign of a serious life-threatening condition. It could signal a serious condition, such as an ischemic stroke or an infection like meningitis. In fact, stroke symptoms can be mistaken for those of a migraine. An excruciating headache can also be a sign of a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). This is deep bleeding between the brain and the thin tissues that cover it. An SAH, considered a type of stroke, is often caused by a ruptured brain aneurysm, which occurs when a weakened blood vessel swells and burst. This cuts off the blood supply to the brain. SAH are rare, but a missed or delayed diagnosis is common and can be fatal. Early diagnosis of subarachnoid hemorrhages is critical to survival and to pre-empting short-term complications like recurrent bleeding and vasospasm (reduced blood flow to the brain). Anyone age 40 or older who experiences one of more of the following should be evaluated: Your headache comes on suddenly and is the worst headache you have ever had. You have speech, vision, movement or balance problems. You have a stiff neck or fever. Your headache is accompanied by nausea or vomiting. Your headache develops upon exertion. You have a head injury. Your headache affects one eye, with redness in that eye. Over the past several years, the generous gifts of community organizations, families, and individuals, augmented by money from the Endowment Fund, were directed to the Kitchen Project. That success of the project has assured that the WCCOA will be able to continue to provide congregate and home delivered meals to a growing number of older adults in Wood County. As in the past, WCCOA welcomes gifts to the Endowment Fund to memorialize family members and to honor people in the WCCOA network of volunteers and professionals in the Wood County Community. Jack is the home delivered meal recipient of the Wood County Wishes program. He enjoyed lunch from Bob Evans and a homemade apple pie. He is a retired CSX worker and enjoys the outdoors especially hunting. Congratulations Jack! 17 Volunteer Views What are YOU thankful for? Coming to the end of the year, we always think about Thanksgiving, but do we ever ask ourselves what we are thankful for? This year, I am extremely thankful I have a job; work with wonderful, caring individuals; and, last but not least, have a bountiful basket of volunteers who understand what it means to “give of oneself!” In an article in ScienceDaily entitled Motives Matter: Why We Volunteer Has an Impact On Our Health, it states, “People who give, live longer, studies have shown. Now, a new study shows that why people volunteer – not whether they volunteer – is what really counts.” The article further states, “People who volunteer because they want to help others, live longer than people who don’t volunteer at all.” Hmmm….makes sense to me! Okay, so you are unable to deliver meals. Have you thought about going into the senior center in your neighborhood and asking to help with lunch set up or clean up? How about teaching a knitting or crocheting class? Or, guys, how about teaching a class on a card game or a board game or a sport? Do you have a family member who is good with organizing? Let’s use our imagination!! With the holidays, we can all use this time to create some inexpensive gifts for family and friends. I am thankful for the more than three hundred volunteers (combined total) at ALL the sites! Wood County has some truly awesome residents who, by nature, have impacted many lives. WCCOA has done many programs with the very young to programs for the older residents – and every age bracket in between. I can see why volunteers who help others live longer – it’s rewarding both ways! Help is always accepted. And, if the truth be known, not only do “many hands make the work go faster” but it makes it FUN! Please join us and see for yourself. Give me a call – Jackie Metz, Volunteer Coordinator, 419.353.5661 or 1.800.367.4935. I’d love to talk with YOU!
