Living My Faith by Donna Walton
My first ministry was as a college student spending a summer in central
Mexico with a group called Amigos Anonymous. Over 100 students from
the Bay Area formed around ten projects; all working with the local clergy.
We lived with families, attended daily Mass, worked during the day on projects and home visiting, and constantly socialized with the Mexican people
and each other. The quiet feeling that I had during early morning Mass was
one of being connected to God, doing His will, and absolutely enjoying
every minute of it.
Of course I met my husband Jack Walton during this time, and there I
found a spiritual partner who also was searching for ways to implement
Christ’s gospel. The themes of Mexico, speaking Spanish, sharing the Eucharist and social justice have continued throughout our lives.
At St. Agnes, our son was invited in 1988 to go to Tijuana to build homes
with a group of churches sponsored by the First Christian Church in Concord. On returning after spending Easter week, his first words were “I’m
going back next year.” Our daughter followed, and soon Jack and I were
involved too. This is one ministry that has been a steady activity for our
family. Every year we start with a new group and always the high school
students, the other adult sponsors and the people of Tijuana find ways to
touch me deeply, renew my faith, and realize how important it is to reach
out to help others.
Another ministry at St. Agnes that has been instrumental in my spiritual
journey is Just Faith. Sharing thirty Wednesday evenings discussing social
justice writings and issues and working on projects together, made us a very
close group of friends. Whether we are selling Fair Trade Coffee, having
breakfast with the men at the Michael Chavez Labor Center, or sponsoring
the Lenten Soup Suppers, I can always count of these friends to bring me
new spiritual insights and supportive prayers.
The newest ministry that I have been involved in is St. Vincent de Paul. It
is such a privilege to be able to help out those in our own community who
are in such need. Every visit begins with a prayer with the family we are visiting. Then when we are able to help them, knowing our parish has provided us with the funds to do so, it feels like we are doing Christ’s work.

Every ministry in my life is a gift. One brought me my husband; another
helped me to be closer to my teenage children; friendships have developed
from each of them; but mostly, they have all brought me closer to God.

The Book of Remembrance will be in the church
during the month of October. Parishioners are invited to enter the names of their loved ones to be remembered on All Souls Day and the Mass of Remembrance.

30,000 brand new wheelchairs all
over the world, to children, teens,
and adults in need of mobility, but
who could not afford a wheelchair. Please join the
Knights of Columbus, Fr. Johnson, and Chris Lewis
(son of MDA National Chairman, Jerry Lewis), to

family member, loved one or friend whose service
WAS NOT held at St. Agnes Church AND would
like their name added to our Mass of Remembrance

Remembrance will take place November 8 at 10 am.
Next weekend, after all Masses members of the St. Agnes Knights of Columbus will be in the back of the
church with information about who
the Knights are and how you can
join. If you are not able to stop by our table today, please join us, Thursday, October 30th at 7 pm
in Cauchi Hall to learn more about the Knights of
Columbus. Please bring your family with you.

PARISH CENSUS AND OUTREACH
PROJECT STARTS IN NOVEMBER
Father Johnson and the Pastoral Council have
initiated a process to update our parishioner family records. We are calling this the “Census and
Outreach Project.” During the month of November, binders with an alphabetical listing of
our current parishioners and their contact information (name, address, phone number, email)
will be placed at the Welcome Desk. We are
asking every Parishioner to stop by after Mass to
verify their information and update where appropriate. Once this step is complete, changes will
be entered into our Parish Data System.
The “Outreach” part of the project will begin in
January, when we will invite volunteers to help
us contact (first by phone and then, if necessary,
by mail) those parishioners who did NOT verify
their information during the November phase of
the project. Volunteers will attempt to determine the status of the parishioner or family.
Have they moved? Are they unable to attend
Mass due to illness? Is their absence from our
parish temporary or permanent? With this information, we will be able to have confidence our
records are accurate and we may even be able to
help some parishioners reconnect with St. Agnes.

EFT Provider is Changing to FAITH DIRECT
We are starting the process to change our EFT provider to FAITH DIRECT. All Parishioners who
have been making contributions via e-giving, and
wish to continue making their plate collection donations using e-giving, will need to enroll in FAITH
DIRECT. A letter, with a Faith Direct enrollment
form, has been mailed to your residence. Enrollment forms can be completed either online, or given
to Marlene McCann in the Ministry Center.
Parishioners who are not currently making donations
via e-giving will be given the opportunity to enroll in
Faith Direct later this month. A letter, with an enrollment form, will be sent to your residence. Enrollment forms will also be available in the vestibules
or at the Ministry Center the last week of October.
Any questions regarding e-giving, or Faith Direct,
may be directed to Marlene.
There is still time to join our high school and college
age youth and adult sponsors as we plan for our
homebuilding trip to Tijuana April 4-11, 2015. Our
next meeting is Mon., Nov. 3, 7:30 p.m., St. Agnes
