TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
OCTOBER 12, 2014
 From Father John’s Desk...
The Origins of the Rosary
As we wait in expectation for
our parish’s 150th Anniversary,
we could begin to find
ourselves drawn more to
reflect on our past as a
community of faith. One
element of this reflection is
reflecting on the great name of
our parish: Holy Rosary.
The title “Rosary” is a Latin
word meaning a garland of
roses. This name would inspire
St. Louis de Montfort in his
monumental work The Secret of
the Rosary to say that each time
we pray the Rosary, we weave
a crown of roses and place it
upon the head of our Blessed
Mother.
The origins of the Rosary in a
historical sense are somewhat
unknown. The use of beads in
prayer is a tradition that
predates Christianity. When
Christians began to use prayer
beads, they were used as an aid
for contemplation to count the
number of Hail Marys and Our
Fathers a person had prayed.
Tradition tells that Our Blessed
Mother gave St. Dominic the
Rosary in its present form in
1214. At the time, St. Dominic
was combating a heresy in the
Church called Albigensianism.
Withdrawing to prayer, he
begged God with tears for a
way to combat this heresy.
As he prayed, the Blessed
Mother is said to have
appeared to him, telling him to
preach her psalter, the Rosary.
This prayer caught on quickly.
People envied monks and the
early Church Fathers who
would pray the entire Book of
Psalms daily and wondered
how they could, in the midst
of their busy lives, pray as the
could. The Rosary, with its
original 150 Hail Mary’s
divided into 15 mysteries
gave them that opportunity to
pray similar to the holy men
and women they looked up to.
Today, however, reciting Hail
Mary’s seems very tedious,
boring, and pointless. We will
look more at this next week,
as we continue to ponder the
Rosary in this month of Mary
and her Psalter, the Rosary.
150th Anniversary Ideas
Speaking of the 150th
Anniversary, I have
previously written in these
pages about some of the ideas
the Anniversary Committee
has thought of to
commemorate our parish’s
anniversary next year. We
would be remiss, however, in
not hearing ideas from the
parishioners as well. To that
end, I invite you to write me a
note or to send me an email if
you have an idea to make next
year’s celebration even more
special and meaningful. It may
be an event, an addition to an
idea already presented, or just
a general suggestion. I would
ask that you get your
suggestions to me by noon on
October 20th, the date of our
next committee meeting.
Thank you!

Pet Blessing
As I was completing my
retreat, I realized it was the
Feast of St. Francis and we had
not scheduled a pet blessing!
My apologies for this
oversight. We will be blessing
pets on October 17th at 11:45
in honor of the Feast of St.
Francis. All pets and their
owners are welcome to come
and join our school
community for this special
blessing.
Graduation Week
This week, I am graduating!
For the past year and a half, I
have been participating in a
program called Good Leaders,
Good Shepherds, which is to
help develop leadership and
personal skills for priests. This
week marks my final session
and graduation.
With me having been gone so
much recently, I am going to
live a bit in two worlds this
week. From Tuesday to
Thursday, I will be staying in
New Haven and be in
meetings most of the day, but
will drive back each morning
to have Mass here and to
check in on things before
driving back for meetings. I
will be available via email or
through the call forwarding
feature on my phone line, if
you need to reach me. After
this, I promise to stay home…
at least for awhile.
I will see you in Church! - Fr.
John

“And my God will supply every need of yours…”
- Philippians 4:19
God really does provide for those that are
grateful and generous. This is very difficult for
people that don’t live a stewardship lifestyle to believe.
People are skeptical and say it’s just coincidence. If you are
skeptical, try living a stewardship lifestyle for just one
month – be generous with your gifts of time, talent and
treasure and see how God provides for your needs.
Cookbook Update
Email recipes for the cookbook to

We are celebrating our 150th Anniversary in 2015 and
planning a parish cookbook. Everyone is invited to
contribute recipes. There will be a box in the back of

Recipes need to be in by October 17th so we can have
the book ready for Christmas presents and they can be
used throughout the whole 150th year. If you have any
questions call Cyrilla Sommer at 456-2339. Thank you.
Please pray for the repose of the souls of:

submit favorite recipes too. All submitters will
have their name in the cookbook along with
their recipe.
May their souls and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

VOLUNTEERS WE NEED YOU!
October 12, 2014
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
“Today vast numbers of people still do not know Jesus
Christ.” Pope Francis began his message for this year’s celebration of World Mission Sunday with these words. But
he quickly offers us the way to make a joy-filled, life-giving
difference. “World Mission Sunday is a privileged moment
when the faithful of various continents engage in prayer
and concrete gestures of solidarity in support of the young
Churches in mission lands.”
On October 19, as the Archdiocese of St. Louis celebrates
this “privileged moment” let us join our brothers and sisters around the world who will gather at the Lord’s Table
to celebrate, with great joy, our common vocation as missionaries. Our prayers and concrete gestures of solidarity
will help build local churches, like the church in Mongolia,
the world’s youngest Catholic Church, and churches across
the globe. Your financial help on World Mission Sunday,
offered in the collection for the Society for the Propagation
of the Faith, will support the 1,150 young mission dioceses
and communities who await the “Good News” of Jesus as
their saving hope.
Pope Francis encourages us to take joyful part in the
Church’s mission to all the nations, as we live our lives
grounded in love for Jesus and concern for the needs of the
most disadvantaged. May World Mission Sunday offer
each one of us an opportunity to accomplish both, as we
share the joy of the Gospel and help the poor by our fervent prayer and through generous hearts!
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Robert J. Carlson
Archbishop of St. Louis
