Mass Bar Association: Protecting Your Home
As seniors grow older, one of
the most common concerns is what will happen to the property and real estate
that they worked so hard for during their lifetime. Fortunately, there are both
estate planning and tax options that not only allow elders to retain control of
their real estate, but also let them keep it at a lower cost. A Homestead Declaration, deed with a life estate and various tax deferrals and exemptions are all
important tools that can help protect the home. Elder Law Attorney Caren
Schindel from the MA Bar Association will be here Thursday, May 29th at
3:00 to discuss estate planning and tax options available to seniors. Caren will
also have a copy of the Massachusetts Bar Associations guide “Taking Control
of Your Future: A legal Checkup” for every participant. This is a guide on a
wide range of legal issues affecting the lives of seniors.
Please call ahead and make a reservation so Caren will have enough materials for all.
Mother’s Day Brunch
Join us on Monday, May 12th at 10:30 for a lovely brunch fit for a
queen. Outreach worker Carol LaFreniere will be hosting. Please call ahead for a reservation so she
may plan accordingly.
The Internet: What is it?
A history of the internet will be offered on Thursday, May
15th at 10:30. Dan Dion will present an introduction to the internet which will include bridging the great
distance with friends, family and grandchildren with video conferencing, chatting with friends and relatives for free, safely ordering and paying bills online and researching people, places and things on line.
Reservations are a must as we have limited computer stations available.
Monday with Sherlock Holmes DVD Collection Series
Every Monday in
May at 12:00 we will be watching the an episode of the original Sherlock Holmes British series from
the 1940’s with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce on our new 62” flat screen TV, courtesy of the Millis
Lions Club. Our first episode will be “Pearl of Death” . When a valuable pearl with a sinister reputation
is stolen, Sherlock Holmes must investigate its link to a series of brutal murders. Popcorn and beverages will be served. Reservations very much appreciated.

FYI
Beginning August 2014 , Social Security will no longer issue Social Security number printouts
in their field offices. Individuals who need proof of their Social Security number and can not find their
card, will need to apply for a replacement card. Also in October 2014, the field offices will stop providing benefit verification letters, except in emergency situations. Benefit verifications are available online
and can be obtained anytime by registering for a my Social Security account located at
www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount or requested through their toll free number” 1(800) 772-1213. Outreach worker, Carol LaFreniere, would be happy to help should you need it.
Openings Supportive Day Group
This is a specifically designed program for elders or
disabled individuals who are suffering from mild to moderate cognitive difficulties or who can not stay at
home alone during day. We strive to enrich the lives of each senior by being a part of the supportive
team that allows them to remain healthy, happy and independent. The Group at the Millis Senior Center has a wonderful environment and atmosphere as it is a small group setting. We can enrich the lives
of seniors living alone, with care-taking spouses needing respite, or seniors living with active families. Everyone enjoys our memory enhancement program, chair exercises, board games, trivia, bingo,
crafts, cards, music, singing, movies, laughter and more. We benefit seniors who are depressed or
lonely and missing a sense of community. It’s important to be active to remain your healthiest both
mentally and physically. We value our families but it’s wonderful to have friends your own age with similar life experiences. We give seniors a reason to get up smiling in the morning.
We at the senior center want to offer our heartfelt thanks to those of you who support us with
contributions and donations.

In Memoriam: Lorraine Burnett
Thinking of you: Doris
Freedom Is Not Free - Kelly Strong
I watched the flag pass by one day.
It fluttered in the breeze.
A young Marine saluted it,
and then he stood at ease.
I looked at him in uniform
So young, so tall, so proud,
He'd stand out in any crowd.
I thought how many men like him
Had fallen through the years.
How many died on foreign soil?
How many mothers' tears?
How many pilots' planes shot down?
How many died at sea?
How many foxholes were soldiers' graves?
No, freedom isn't free.
I heard the sound of TAPS one night,
When everything was still
I listened to the bugler play
And felt a sudden chill.
I wondered just how many times
That TAPS had meant "Amen,"
When a flag had draped a coffin
Of a brother or a friend.
I thought of all the children,
Of the mothers and the wives,
Of fathers, sons and husbands
With interrupted lives.
I thought about a graveyard
At the bottom of the sea
Of unmarked graves in Arlington.
No, freedom isn't free.
