President’s Message
By Carolyn Rubino
Where did the summer go? Bocce, Shuffleboard and
Golf are finished for this season and Bowling has started.
As you know, you are required by Brick to have your house
number clearly visible on your house. Please make sure
you get this chore done, either on your own, or for a fee,.
Greenbriar will provide the service, just contact the office.
Our Association has formed an Alliance with Greenbriar
II, we have discussed common problems, and we have set
a date to meet with the Mayor to persue answers to such
issues as broken curbs and bent street signs. We have sent
invitations to all the senior communities in Brick, to meet
here, again to discuss common problems and to seek answers to them thru discussion and by inviting guests in for
strategies to solve problems.
The Board is in the process of creating a five year plan
for some much needed projects. Some of them are new
concrete or pavers for the pool deck, upgrades to the sprinkler system, investigating solar for the clubhouse, and an
HVAC system. These are some that are being explored for
feasibility, they are not necessarily going to be completed.
Please continue to be aware of the people in your
neighborhood, call security or go to the office if you feel
someone is in dire need. You will remain anonymous, and
steps will be taken to help that person. Enjoy the fall, be
safe and most of all be active.
Important Information for
Contributors to the Greenbriar Times

Deadline for articles is the 8th of October for the
next issue. Also the Editorial Staff will select the photos

Computer Club News
By Elma Perry
“Computers are not User Friendly but we are”
E-mails are a good way for us to keep in touch with
family and friends and, of course, it is fun to FORWARD
pictures and jokes, etc. However some FORWARDS can be
a very bad idea because they are being used by Spammers
and Telemarketers to get our e-Mail address, our account
information and other tracking information to help them
get rich. Also, later they may send us junk mail with a
virus attached.
Here are some examples of “bad” e-Mails that I have
seen recently, many of which play on our conscience to get
our e-Mail information.
• “Forward this e-Mail to 10 other people will get you a
$60 credit on your cell phone bill.”
• “Forward this e-Mail petition to Restore the Pledge of
Allegiance to Public Schools”.
• “Forward this e-Mail to X number of people if you are
not ashamed of God/Jesus”.
• Any e-Mail that tells you about a child with cancer, or
other disability and asks “how would you feel if this
were your child”.
Remember: E-Mail petitions are NOT acceptable to
Congress or any other organization. (To be acceptable,
petitions must have a “signed signature” and full address
of the person signing the petition.) So if you do sign it, you
are just helping the e-Mail trackers.
If you receive an e-Mail which you think might, or
might not, be one of these examples, go to www.snopes.
com. Enter the subject of your e-Mail in the SEARCH box
and you will learn if this e-Mail is True or False.
Do yourself and your friends a big favor by NOT forwarding this type of e-Mail in the future!
Plan to attend the next Computer Club Meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month. Meet
other residents with computers and acquire new computer
skills too.
By Barbara Novick
On the August 13th meeting of the Book Club discussed the historical novel “The Chaperone” by Laura
Moriarty. It is based on the changing mores in the USA
during the 1920’s and one of the central characters is Louise
Brooks, a silent movie superstar. Louise’s chaperon, Cora,
quickly becomes the central (fictional) character that drives
the action of the story.
All of the attendees read the book and enjoyed the fastmoving storyline. The book covers more than a decade in
real time and a lot of ideas and changes happen in those ten
years. While Cora grows slowly as an individual, Louise’s
life story is like a comet rising fast and quickly burning out.
Many moral issues are raised in this book as it chronicles the fast times of the 1920’s. Women’s rights, fam ily
structure, marriage, fashion, and women at work are all part
of the story. The whole issue of orphans and orphanages
is explored. We look forward to reading another book by
Laura Moriarty.
The book we are reading for the September 10th meeting is “The Painted Girls”. It is a novel set in the Parisian
demimonde of the 1880’s. Our facilitator is Carolyn Rubino
and we meet in the Library at 7:00 on the second Wednesday of the month.

THE GREENBRIAR TIMES OCTOBER 2014
The Cameos
By Judy Cullen
On August 9, 2014 the curtain went up at 7:30 pm at
our GREENBRIAR THEATRE. There were the fabulous
CAMEOS, once again to give us a great evening of entertainment. What can I really say about this terrific group. I
have been writing an article about them for the past three
years. You run out of great things to say after awhile, and
that time has just about come. This was their 4th time appearing here, so in my opinion they speak for themselves.
They will be returning again next August 2015 for their
5th time. We had 300 residents in attendance compared
to 80-100 we had with other performers. So it shows how
great they are, and how the residents really enjoy this group,
since they keep coming back for more.
Al and his committee, as always thank those residents
who help support our shows and help make money for
GREENBRIAR, so we can keep having these shows coming back for a great evening of entertainment.
Remember we have one more show in October 2014
called “Sentimental Journey”. Watch your communicator
and bulletin for the date of this show, and for the dates we
will be selling tickets for the final show of 2014. Once
again thank you RAUL for all the great posters which you
did advertising all of our 2014 shows.
Hope to see you all in October at the show.
Briarpatch Garden News
Lori Yoncak organized several parties at the garden
this year, thanks Lori.
Joe Ginger did a great job controlling our irrigation.
Much thanks to our Saturday Community Produce Sharing
Program. Workers were Lori Yoncak, Joe Bayer, Willa and
Jim Costello, Sally Brooks, Bob Sharp, Anita and Tony
Domino, Maureen Beahan, Sue Sherman, Deanna Burke,
Barbara Novick and Donna Curtis.
Pictured are Lori Yoncak, Joe Giner and Willa Costello

Shuffleboard
By Terri Casares
The shuffleboard season is over now and we are looking forward to next year. I want to thank everyone for their
support and their time. We will return next year in May.
Everyone have a safe and healthy winter.

in six years to the Finals. Greenbriar moves on to play on Aug. 20, at 9:00 am
at the Renaissance community in Manchester, N.J.
The Final Results
Our Wed. Traveling Bocce Club has come to an end for this season. On
Aug. 20th the six best bocce teams in Ocean County went to the Renaissance
Community to have a play-off. The six teams were FS South Knolls, Green
Team, from Jackson N.J. FS Metedeconk, from Jackson, Lake Ridge of
Manchester N.J. FS South Knolls, and
Red Team. And the Renaissance Club
also from Manchester. Greenbriar tried
their best but found some of the other
clubs were just a little stronger. our two
women teams did a great job, beating
South Knolls and Renaissance. Team
#1 consists of Micky Kwiatkowski,
Carmela Schiessl, Annie Mazeika and
Jean Gramuglia. Team #2 consists of
Pat Tolan, Flo Taggert, Rose Infante and
Arletta Beeden. Congratulations to all
our members who came out and played.
Greenbriar placed fourth in the finals;
not bad for our first trip to the Finals.
We’re still looking for more men
players. Please call Carmela at 732-2020919, you can always be a sub. We play
on Wed. morning at all communities in
Ocean County and home.

Pickleball
Pickleball continues on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays as well as impromptu meetings throughout the week.
We get 12 to 20 players per session. The weather has been
very favorable and we had a great picnic and our occasional
Saturday ice cold watermelon. Thanks to Vinnie Nardone
for the ice water he provides.
Sue Peters and her partner won a third place Bronze
Medal at the New Jersey State Senior Olympics in Woodbridge. Conrgratulations ladies!
Pictured at the court are: Barbara Bayer, Anna DeSantis, Vin Nardone, Paulina DeFilippis, Nancy Cecere and her
sister and Kathleen Quirk, and her sister Marie.

Let’s Meet: Bill Leach
By Joyce Leach
Bill Leach, William Henry Leach III, was born and
grew up in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Bill and his sister,
Marjorie, walked to the local grammar school. Bill says,
“I could never get away with anything. My sister would
get home and tell Mom anything I did wrong.” Dad was a
local self-employed plumber for many years and became
Plumbing Inspector for the City of New Brunswick. Mom
was the cook, house cleaner, and keeper of us kids. When
my sister died of cancer in her 30’s she left a newborn
daughter and an older daughter. “My Mom was able to
bring the girls into our home. After some time, the older girl
stayed with us and the baby went with the Dad
and a new wife. When Mom also died of cancer
at age 79 it left a hole in my heart. My Dad lived
until he was 91 and kept the family busy.”
“After I graduated High School, Mom insisted I go to college. She wanted me to finish
college. So I graduated Ryder College, spent 5
years in the Marine Corp, went into engineering
at Westinghouse, where I did time study. In other
words how much time it took to do each part on
the assembly line ... how much time it took each
person to do each part. Eventually I decided to
go into my own business and purchased a commercial laundry from a friend of the family in
Point Pleasant Beach.”
“My wife, Helen, and I had four sons and enjoyed living in Point Pleasant Beach where I had the laundry. When
she died of cancer in her early 60’s I lost another love of
my life. It was nice being a local employer. I got to know
people, and was able to keep my eyes on the kids. Whenever
they did anything wrong, I was first to know. The police all
knew me. We enjoyed Point Pleasant Beach community. I
was Chairman of the Board of Adjustment for years, Rotarian for 50 years, member of Durand Masonic Order for 57
years (several sons and grandsons also are members), and
a volunteer fireman for 10-15 years. I remember a fire on
the boardwalk. A photo of my son, Tom, and I as we were
responding to the call was published in the local newspaper.
In recent years my grandson, Justin (Tom’s son) and Tom
were photographed together responding to the fatal motel
fire at the Beach where Justin saved a woman’s life.”
“Today I am proud to be a Greenbriar Kiwanis member.
When my wife, Joyce, and I moved to Greenbriar 17 years
ago, it kept us close to our Church, eight children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and extended families. We
are blessed at this time in our lives as we share it together.”

Greenbriar Athlete Ed Quirk

DISCARDS
In August we talked about signaling partner with your
attitude about a suit so that partner would know whether
to continue leading that suit. Often when defending, you
are out of a suit and must discard. This card too can tell
partner your attitude about a suit.
Let’s say that hearts are led (either by your partner or
the declarer) and you do not have any. You should try to
tell partner what to lead or what not to lead. Again, a high
card says you like it and a low card says you don’t. So if
you discard the ©3, partner will know not to lead clubs
when they are on lead. If you discard the ©8, partner will
know that you are encouraging a diamond lead.
Sometimes you don’t have a good card to describe
your attitude about a suit and must do the best you can.
Partner must judge what is high and what is low. Let’s say
that you have the ©KQ52 and would like a club lead. You
will discard the 5 and partner will have to determine if that
could be the highest card available to discard.
Try it - it’s worth tricks!
Test Yourself
At trick 4, the declarer led the ªQ and partner won with
the ªK. You are out of hearts. What should you probably
discard with this hand? (It may depend on what is showing
in the dummy.)
Ed Quirk ran in the New Jersey Senior Olympics in the
80-84 age group and won 3 medals, one gold and two silver.
He ran second in the 800 meter, first in the 200 meter
and second in the 400 meter race. Ed said the runners are
helpful and friendly. Many go on to the Nationals. Ed said
he trained very hard and will run again next year. Good
luck Ed.

Minnie and Mickey
Mickey and Minnie; the names say a lot. Pat and I were
visiting the animal shelter in Naples, Florida just to look
around mind you. Well, you can guess what happened.
These two 4 month old cuties jumped on our laps and that
was pretty much that. They are true little snow birds. If
I had to guess I would say they prefer NJ as there are so
many friendly dogs here in Greenbriar.
Minnie and Mickey, who are now two years old may
not look exactly alike but are in fact brother and sister.
Don’t even think about separating them. Pat and I are never
alone with these two around. How did we ever get along
without them?
If anyone is thinking of getting a pet, please consider
your local rescue facility. We were so fortunate. You could
be too.

Question of the Month
Submitted by Carolyn Rubino
This month I decided to ask our office staff the question; How would you compare your teenage years to
the teenage world of today? They gave some wonderful,
insightful answers.
DANIELLE MC CORMACK. I was very naive - I did
not know about drugs in the school - LUCKILY. I fear for
my children’s future because of the availability of drugs
in schools today.
PAM LAMPE. I was fine as a teenager until President
Kennedy was assassinated. It really scared me that I had to
realize what a rotten place the world could be, and I knew
then it would not go back to the way it was. The kids today
are growing up knowing a lot of violence in the world.
Some of them worry, some not so much.
SHERILYN SHERWOOD. My teenage years were
carefree; I didn’t have the worries of terrorism, then there
was a promise for a successful future. Whereas, my teenage
children worry about the future of the country, the open
border policy, teenage suicide and the economy. Will there
be a good job for them?

Remember all those delicious candies that we enjoyed
when we were youngsters? The other day I had a yen for
one of my favorites, “Circus Peanuts,” you remember
them? They were shaped like peanuts, orange in color and
made of marshmallows mostly all sugar. The only problem
was that if you ate too many at one time you got sick. My
wife came home one day and handed me a bag of “Circus
Peanuts.” I was good and ate them over a three day period.
Here’s the odd part as I was going to throw away the empty
bag, I noticed that they were made by the Rayge Candy
Co., Brick, NJ 08724.
They say they have been in business for over 51 years.
I wonder what other delicious treats they make?

It is wondrous what a hug can do,
A hug can cheer you when you are blue.
A hug can say, “I love you so,” or
“Gee, I hate to see you go!”
A hug is “Welcome back again!”
And “Great to see you, where have you been?”
A hug can soothe a small child’s pain.
And bring a rainbow after rain.
The hug! There is just no doubt about it
We scarcely could survive without it.
A hug delights and warms and charms,
It must be why God gave us arms!

Night Under the Stars
By Judy Cullen
What a gorgeous night this was, Friday, August 15,
2014, sitting under the stars and around the pool. I felt like I
was in Bermuda, not quite, but one can dream, can’t one. Al,
Art and Joe did a wonderful job in putting this together. Al
got us a new group called “SUNSET ENTERTAINMENT”
and they were great. About 160 residents attended this affair
and they all were having a great time. The group played
tunes from different years. People were even up dancing,
that’s how good they were. It was a little cool for the month
of August and people were wearing sweaters and jackets
but we all still had a good time.
Al is going to get them back again at a future date. A
good time was had by all and Al, Art and Joe want to thank
all those who attended. Thanks again guys for another job
well done.

Kiwanis Kapers
By Neil Moran and Barbara Scharmann
There’s a line in Jerry Herman’s “La Cage Aux Faux”,
and it goes like this, “What’s left of summer is but a Faded
Rose”. How true, look around you, and see how Mother
Nature is now painting all the bushes and trees. Our days
up at the pool are just a fond memory now. Yes, autumn is
upon us, and that means that our Kiwanis Club will be back
to weekly meetings. We only had two meetings in August,
but they were memorable. On August 7th we had Regina
Feldman and her folk dancers who put on a dancing display
of folk dancing from Hungary, Germany, Czech Republic
and Russia at the end of their wonderful performance they
danced two more dances from Israel. Not only was their
dancing superior, but their costumes were outstanding. We
will have them back again.
On the 21st we had a large crowd in attendance to enjoy
a “Bombshell of a Singer”, Maggie Worsdale. She knocked
our socks off, as she sang many songs from Broadway
shows. Songs from the Follies by Soundheim, Cabaret by
Kander, and Marne by Jerry Herman. She really connected
with the audience. Club members rose from their seats and
gave her a well-deserved standing ovation. She is a real
“Trooper” who should be in an off Broadway production.
She will be performing again at the Monmouth County
Library on the 21st of September at 2pm to tunes from
Fiddler on the Roof, with free admission, which we know
you would enjoy.
By now, all of you have received your 2014-2015
Greenbriar Telephone Directory. You can thank one of
our members Dennis McGinnis, who volunteered his time
to manage all of the tasks necessary to bring this year’s
Directory to you. We know everyone uses the Directory
as a Greenbriar Bible it helps them find everyone’s information and local vendors to help them with their homes,
as well as many other professionals and services. You can
even find out when church services are available at our
local churches. This long standing effort for almost 40
years helps the Association deliver a professional looking
guide each year that takes the efforts of many people in
the Kiwanis Club.
You should have been there for the “one hour” effort
during which a great team assembled over 1400 bags
containing the Directory and other important information.
I was amazed how everyone knew their roles and how to
enjoy each other’s company in the process. The Kiwanis
Club is a real family of people who care about each other
and the children in the community who volunteer their time
in many ways. Your routes were assembled and delivered
to your doors. I enjoyed going house to house and placing
the bag of goodies on your door knobs.
When you see a member of Kiwanis Club, thank them
for their efforts. They are all proud of this long standing
project. We were able to attract 15 new local advertisers
in this year’s directory, who are all anxious to serve you in
the coming year. They can be found in the index.
And as always, we’ll leave a light on for you.

A White-throated Sparrow under my feeders
I have some birds that come to my feeders that feed
on the scraps and dropped seeds that they find under the
feeders. Among these are a number of species of sparrows. I find it hard to identify some sparrow species, but
the White-throated Sparrow I know quite well. It is fairly
easy to spot because of its bright white throat, the yellow
mark between its eye and its bill, and the white stripe in its
black crown. An alternate form has an indistinct dark spot
on its chest. The yellow mark near its bill distinguishes it
from the similar looking White-crowned Sparrow.
The White-throated Sparrow breeds across Canada and
appears in California and the Eastern and Southern United
States in winter. I look for the first one I see in the fall to
arrive toward the end of October. I expect to see a few under
my feeders, on and off, for the rest of the fall and winter.
The White-throated Sparrow sings frequently even in
winter. Its song sounds like “oh sweet Canada, Canada”
and once heard is easy to remember.
This sparrow likes to stay near the ground. It is usually
found near low shrubs at forest edges where it eats buds in
the spring. It also frequents pond and bog edges, regrowth,
and woodsy suburbs. It readily comes to feeders. In the winter I often see it scratching around in the leaves under my
feeders. I think it is one of the most attractive of sparrows.
Populations of this sparrow are stable at this time and
its status is “least concern”.
In the photo is a White-throated Sparrow feeding under
my feeders.

You ask what is involved in her work day? Who knew
she wears many hats? She sets up all the tables/chairs for
bingo, bridge card games, every activity like golf meetings,
movies, etc. She cleans off the shuffle board courts, yes, she
removes the snow at the entranceway to the clubhouse...
who knew? She helps set up the outside activities including
holiday parties on the pool deck, waters flowers outside,
keeps the bathrooms clean, scrubs tiles, and vacuums, dusts
and keeps our place looking so nice.
Carol cannot kill a bug and recently said “If I can
escort them out I would rather do that than kill them. One
time I was sweeping the floor and a big bug was on the
floor. As I was scooping it up in two cone cups a resident
came in and didn’t know what I was doing. I laughed and
explained I hate to kill anything and was getting this bug
out of here.” WHO KNEW?
“I really appreciate the nice, positive residents. They
make my day because they are so friendly” “I constantly
hear, Hi Carol, how are you doing, Carol? It makes me feel
so appreciated.” WHO KNEW these words of kindness
could make one feel so good? “That is what Greenbriar
is...nice, kind people.”

This is a True Story
By George Delmarmo
Every writer always wonders if what he writes is read
and if it has an impact upon his readers. The following
actual happened. (Honest to God)
This past weekend I received a phone call from someone who wants to remain nameless who had read one of my
books, “A Heart Never Heals”. The story is about a man
who after many years made contact with someone he knew
some fifty years earlier while attending school.
The caller, after reading the story, decided to call
someone who he was very fond of some fifty years earlier
when they both were in college. The way he had first met
her was through her roommate whom he was dating. Exit
the roommate and a new relationship was started.

Their relationship lasted for a few years and the two
drifted apart. The caller was traveling near the town where
she once lived and recalling the events that occurred in my
book tried to find her house. Since fifty years had passed
since he was last there. The entire area had changed but with
a little effort and the help of his computer he was able to
locate the exact position of the house and her phone number.
He called ...she answered...He identified himself...She
remembered him ... and fifty years of being apart disappeared.
With tongue in cheek he promised that their first born
would be named after me.
I Repeat ... This is a True Story.
