President’s Message
Submitted by Carolyn Rubino
The Greenbriar Times staff and I would like to take
this opportunity to wish you a very Happy and Healthy
New Year. The Department of Environmental Protection
has been exploring records and they’ve decided they want
to check 12 of our wells. Nanette and I went to Trenton
for a meeting with two of their representatives recently.
Accompanying us was an expert in these types of affairs
that Greenbriar hired to aid the Board’s understanding of
the issues and as an aid in making proper decisions as to
procedures and cost. The expenses that will be incurred
while this is going on has made it necessary to put the five
year plans that were made on hold. The costs incurred
will be deducted from the Reserves. As the Board learns
more about the process we will keep you, the residents,
informed. During the winter months the maintenance crew
will continue outside trimmings, paint the real estate office
and clean equipment just to list few jobs that will keep
them busy. The travel agent, Theresa Boyd, has started.
She is located in the rear auditorium several days a week.
Check the Communicator for details. If you are interested
in joining the Greenbriar Travel Club please call the office
and again watch the Communicator for details. Through
the winter months, please keep an eye on your neighbors
to make sure all is well.

Kiwanis Enjoys Chorus
Just before Christmas, the choral group from Pt. Pleasant Boro High School serenaded the Kiwanis club in the
auditorium. It was a great show. These talented young
adults and their teachers should be commended for a
wonderful holiday program. Music and Art Programs are
a great asset to our community.

impressive group. As a guest speaker we had Ms. Reagan
Quare from the Jenkinson’s Aquarium who brought a very
special guest, “Pete” the penquin. “Pete,” after coming out
of his container, stole the show by walking all around the
room to say “Hello”. In a flash, twenty cell phones were
whipped out and Pete became an instant hit.
We topped that in the guise of the Point Pleasant
Borough Show Choir who sang some Christmas and Holiday songs and danced to go along with the music. They
wrapped up their presentation with selections from Steven
Sondheim’s “Into the Woods” which was a preview of their
annual musical. Needless to say they got a standing ovation.
Our club brought in 2 new members. One of them is
Mrs. Judith Cullen wife of our immediate past president and
Kathleen Gleeson a fairly new resident. Welcome Ladies!’

Partners will make mistakes at every game. They want
to hear your appreciation. Do not offer “constructive” criticism. It is criticism. Discuss your playing agreements and

Try to play in tempo and without expression so that

If you have been attending Greenbriar Computer Club meetings you probably heard Dick or Barry or another member
mention their use of the “Cloud”. But maybe you missed that discussion, so what does the Cloud do?
Actually it is not as complicated as it may sound. “Cloud Computing” is just a way to store and access your data using
the Internet instead of some other method such as a hard drive connected to your computer. The Cloud uses a network
of servers which act as a storage facility.
For a long time we have been saving our files to a hard drive - a tangible box that sits on our desk. Today many
businesses use the Cloud to store their data.
E-Mail is a basic example of Cloud Computing. It can be accessed anywhere at any time from any device. Because
of the many devices that we use today, Cloud Computing is even more beneficial. Pictures or music or other items stored
on a home computer can easily be accessed and viewed or played on any mobile device.
However there are some privacy concerns about using the Cloud. You don’t want private photos, financial information, etc. to be compromised, so you must update your Password frequently and use a Security question that is not easy
to guess. “Your mother’s maiden name” or “Your High School” can easily be found.
It is also important to remember that some apps transmit information, such as geographic location, texts or photos
even when running in the background. Therefore, as an extra precaution, control the settings on these apps and turn off
their ability to track your whereabouts or even their ability to connect to the Cloud at all.
So although there is a potential for information to be compromised, you can prevent that likelihood from happening
if you follow these extra precautions.
For more information about Cloud Computing click on this LINK:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/c1oud computing
Plan now to attend the next Computer Club Meeting scheduled for the first Thursday of each month at 7 pm. You will
meet other residents who are interested in computers and perhaps learn something new about computer technology as well.

THE GREENBRIAR TIMES JANUARY 2015
Let’s Meet: Three (3) Generations
By Joyce Leach
Thirdly, Jill’s daughter, Kristine Tooker moved into
Greenbriar with her fiance, Eric Mutter. Kristine’s husband
died eight years ago, a huge loss to her and her family. She
keeps his memory alive by a yearly surf contest fundraiser
to benefit scholarships in his name. After three years on
her own, friends introduced her to Eric and she is looking
forward to sharing this next phase of her life with him.
Kris adds that she spent six years as a councilwoman in
the Beach, and two terms as Council President. She loves
teaching in Point Beach High School and also works as
their librarian. Kris is also an adjunct instructor at Ocean
County College.
Next in this series we will meet with Jean Borden
Johnson again.
This is a four part series of three special women:
mother, daughter and granddaughter who all live in Greenbriar. They have a close bond that has pulled them into our
community and they enliven the presence of all they meet.
First, Jean Borden Johnson is a “firecracker” and you
never know what she is going to say ... as her daughter
warned me. Sure enough, she held true to her word. When
asked when she plans to go back to Boca Raton for the
winter she says, “I like to be there for New Years, 1 hold
a party from 6 to 10 pm and at 10:00 the ball drops and I
say ‘goodnight all, go home’, and if the revelers stay, I just
shuffle off to bed.” Jean is an avid golfer and is proud she
has made 5 holes in one in her golfing career which didn’t
begin until she retired from Point Pleasant Beach High
School. Her sister, Audrey Ruban (Cookie to family and
close friends), lives in Greenbriar, also. It is a family affair.
Secondly, Jean’s daughter, Jill Holland, has lived in
Greenbriar the longest of the group - she brought them all
here. Jill retired in 2013 as secretary of Bay Head School
after 25 years of service. She said that she is looking
forward to her daughter’s wedding to a great guy and is
sharing her grandmother’s wedding band for the vows to
take place shortly. Jill ‘discovered’ Greenbriar while giving
a resident friend, Janet Freeman, a ride home from their
volunteer work at Harvey Church, in Point Pleasant. She
didn’t know of Greenbriar and was very impressed with
our community. Jill went to open houses every Sunday
for five months after deciding to make the move. Her son,
Michael Mercuro, is a realtor with ReMax in Point Pleasant
Beach, and she said, “I drove him crazy until I found the
right home, the cherry tree in full bloom helped sell me,
along with the great location across from the clubhouse. I
sold my home in Point Pleasant to my son and his bride.”

At the November meeting Pat and Paul Rodriguez

The book discussed at the November 12th meeting was
“The Midwife of Hope River” by Patricia Harman. It is
the story of Patience Murphy, a midwife who practices in

1930. Her mentor and best friend, Mrs. Kelly, has recently
died and Patience is left alone to continue the much needed

Question of the Month
Submitted by Pat McClendon
What are your New Year’s Resolutions?
Katie - Terrier Mix
Owner: Claire Marron
JOAN MEROLA, MARY KIRCHNER, AND TOM
ROY - I don’t make resolutions because, in the past, before the first week of the New Year is over, they’ve been
broken!!
Heeer’s KATIE!! There are so many adjectives that
describe this happy, contrary, determined, barky, stubborn,
very, very cute dog! She is so lovable when getting her
own way, changes to a brat when you don’t respond to her
wishes! A barrel of dynamite, who at 11 yrs. shows NO
signs of aging - still runs frantically when excited (takes
very little to excite her!) and can bark at a dog going by
for 20 minutes! A car in the driveway leads to hysterical
barking because she KNOWS the company only came to
see her! Her exuberant greeting when you come in is a
turn-off for many, but she’s just SO happy to see you!! I
raised 5 kids and never had one as stubborn or challenging
as this dog ... thank God! I’m just grateful that she can’t
talk back - but she certainly can show her happiness or
displeasure. She is so endearing in spite of her stubbornness and she makes me laugh at her attempts to control
everything around her ... I guess no one ever told her SHE
is the pet needing discipline - not I!
JOE GIORDANO - 17 years ago I made a resolution to
quit smoking, and I haven’t smoked another cigarette since!
MARLENE FAHEY - I don’t make New Year’s resolutions anymore. I used to make them, but they were always
broken shortly after New Year’s Day!
