President’s Message
Can you believe that another Holiday season is upon
us? We have had a successful year, the office is organized
and very productive, Joe R. and our crew have done a great
job with work tickets, shrubs, painting and renovating the
properties that Greenbriar has acquired. LMS has ensured
that the maintence you pay toward lawns and shrubs made
Greenbriar look terrific. In tile future we are working toward having the heating/cooling system regulated so the
clubhouse is comfortable. Please report crooked signs to
the office; let’s continue to make our home look terrific.
Have a wonderful holiday season and a Happy New Year.
Don’t forget there is a Holiday Party on Saturday, December Sixth and do come to the clubhouse to celebrate New

Greenbriar Newcomers
A Wine and Cheese Party was held on Sunday, October 12th for the last six months of Newcomers. We had 50
in attendance including our committee and a few Board
members. It was a festive afternoon and the Newcomers
that attended were extremely friendly and bonded nicely.
The Board added a lot of information and as always encouraged our new residents to become involved in our
many activities. The Committee (below) did a nice job and
were pleased with the results. Another date next Spring has
already been reserved.

Loraine Voorhees Day

October 28th, the Service Club honored Loraine
Voorhees for her many years of service as Chairlady of
the Quilting Group. Loraine is leaving to go to an Assisted
Living Facility in Ocean Grove. We will miss Loraine
more than you could imagine. The beautiful Quilts that are
Raffled off at our Fairs, and all the many beautiful Table
Runners, Place Mats, Bibs, Bags, and so much more, are
all completely made by hand by the ladies in the group,
under the direction of Loraine. She has been so dedicated
and has spent hours setting up the projects for our talented
ladies in the group.
We wish Loraine happiness in her new home, and
remind her that we will be thinking of her and hope she’ll
be back for many visits, and if she should change her mind,
we will be waiting with open arms.

The book discussed at the October 8th meeting was
“Blessings” by Anna Quindlen. It is the story of Skip
Cuddy, caretaker at the estate of Lydia Blessing, who finds
an abandoned baby girl in front of the garage over which
he lives on the Blessings estate. Skip is determined to care
for Faith (the name he gave her), and not turn her over
to the authorities, hoping to give her a better life than he
had growing up in foster care. He is able to keep Faith’s
presence a secret until Mrs. Blessing finds her one stormy
night while looking for him. The story revolves around
Skip and Mrs. Blessing joining forces to see that Faith
gets the proper medical attention and everything a baby
needs, including love.
The events that take place lead the reader on a roller
coaster of emotions as we watch Skip care for Faith and
grow increasingly attached to her. We also get a view of
Mrs. Blessing’s past life and the guilt and regret she experiences over some of the decisions she has made.
The majority of the club members enjoyed the book,
but several, myself included, were disappointed with the
ending.
The book we are reading for the November 12th meeting is “The Midwife of Hope River” by Patricia Harman.
Game Day

The Service Club held their annual Game Day/Gift
Auction, originally called our Card Party, Tuesday, October
21st. All the proceeds went to the two combined First Aid
Squads. The turnout was great, and the gifts even better.
Rose Wipperman was our chairlady and what a fantastic
job she did from start to finish.
Thank you to all of you who attended, to not only help
make the day so special, but also supporting us in servicing
our charities. Please don’t forget December 9th, at 1:00pm
in the Auditorium when we will have our Display Day, a
mini Fair, to make up for the cancellation in November.
Everybody please help us to make this a success, as the
proceeds go to our many charities.

Computer Club News

“Computers are not User Friendly but we are”
Since December includes 3 important family - centered
festivities (Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa) there will
probably be many photos taken, so it is an ideal time to
review a few of the digital photo basics.
The dimensions of a digital photo are listed as pixels
(picture elements), for example “800 x 600” or “1520 x
1280” where the first number is the width of the photo and
the second number is the height.
Digital photos require specific care to make sure they
aren’t damaged or lost. If not backed up, perhaps on a CD
or a Flash Drive, then a computer failure, a fire or a flood
can wipe out your entire collection. So it is important to
keep one set stored away from your house, for example in
a Safety Deposit Box. Also, store your information using
long-term digital standards such as JPEG or TIF, rather
than proprietary systems because that software may not
be available to your family 50 years from now. (The one
I had used for many years has recently closed down and
on rather short notice). In addition, check and update your
storage media at least once a year.
Having taken your pictures, you need to be able to edit
them. ADOBE PHOTOSHOP (www.adobe.com) is the
premium photo editing program, but it is very expensive.
However they do have a new CS2 software version which
is free. www.adobe.com/downloads/CS2 downloads
IRFANVIEW www.irfanview.com is a good photo
editing program and it is free.
I use PICASSA www.picassa.google.com which is
easy to use and it is free.
I assume that you will want to share those family
pictures with other family members and friends, and may
need to crop or retouch or caption or otherwise edit them.
In Picassa, just CLICK on the picture, then CLICK on Editing Options, CLICK on View and Edit. For captions it is
best to make the caption a part of the photo, so CLICK on
TEXT ABC to add or edit the text on that photo.
An important Rule when editing is to always edit a
copy, never an original. There always needs to be an unedited photo available for many reasons.

Plan to attend the next Greenbriar Computer Club
meeting scheduled for 7 pm on the first Thursday of each
month, to become acquainted with other residents who
have computers, to acquire new computer skills and to
meet Greenbriar computer experts.
Music and the Arts

In October Joan Monte, the originator of the Music
and the Arts group, introduced us to Anthony LaGruth. Mr.
LaGruth is the artistic director and conductor of the Garden
State Philharmonic. His topic of discussion was “What is
American Music?” It was a very interesting and informative
lecture. We learned about the origin of American Music
and its progress throughout the years. It was surprising to
learn that some of the music that we consider American is
a combination of European Music and American Words.
Some of our group traveled to Ocean County College
in November to attend one of his concerts.
Paul Rodriguez came to our November meeting to
show us amazing slides and explain how his friend built a
home in a mountain. It was an unbelievable achievement.
The home even has an elevator. We had a very enjoyable
afternoon watching the slides. On January 28, 2015 we
are hosting soprano Josephine Arlenti, who will be entertaining us with her music. Please join us for a pleasurable
afternoon.

Pickleball is thriving in our area.
Manasquan Rec has started a program for
seniors 3 or 4 days a week indoors. Some
of our players gave a clinic there to help get
them started. About 36 attended. Belmar
Rec may start a Friday program. Brick Rec
plays on Tuesday and Thursdays. We have also played at
Greenbriar Woodlands and Renaissance. Four Seasons in
Wall just put in a court. Many local schools have Pickleball
in their curriculum.

Outdoor Pickleball will be ending soon here due to the

For all of those who may have missed it on Greenbriar
Television (Comcast Channel 97) during the week of October 7th here is a recap of Greenbriar’s veritable Antiques
Roadshow held here in the Greenbriar Clubhouse on
Monday morning, October 7th. Greenbriar residents were
well represented and many took advantage of the rare opportunity to bring their treasured antiques and collectables
to the Clubhouse to have them scrutinized on-camera by
our visiting professionals. The Greenbriar TV guests and
professional appraisers included Tom Martin, director of

framed original signatures of John F. Kennedy, Robert F.
Kennedy, Ted Kennedy, Texas Governor John Connally and
President Lyndon B. Johnson, in a framed panel to mark the
events in Dallas on November 22, 1963. Another panel to
similarly recognize the world’s first space pioneers included
the original signatures of Astronauts Alan B. Shepard and
John Glenn and Soviet Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin. The appraisers said each frame was worth from $2000 to $3000.
Also shown were documents with original signatures of
Walt Disney and Richard Nixon.
Among antique items of special mention were Ruth
Leach’s 1800s children’s rocking chair valued at $ 200,
and her ladies watch, valued between $400 and $600 plus
its gold chain, which added another $200 to $300 to the
watch’s value, Barbara Mansfield’s Shirley Temple Doll,
valued at $ 200 to 400, and Lorene Beckmann’s Asian night
light, valued from $200 to $300.

Our annual “Changing of the Guard” luncheon was
held at Spring Lake Inn on October 15th. Kudo’s go to
Bunny Hughes and Georgia Murray for a job well done in
chairing this event. Your’s truly Neil Moran, was installed
as President, Bob Gannon as President Elect and Marie
Dibblee as Vice-President along with Jack Shaughnessy
remaining as Secretary and Joan Rodie remaining as Treasurer. All indicates that our Kiwanis club is in good hands.
Our outgoing President Art Cullen deserves a hand for a
job well done for the past 12 months. Art can now rest and
take it easy (Lucky Guy!).
Our guests for the past month were all very good. We
started off with a barbershop quartet called “Evolution”
who transported us back to a much happier time in our
lives when we didn’t have computers telling us what’s new.
Their selection of songs brought us back to an era we seem
to have lost. Sad but true!
The following week we kicked it up a notch when
two singers and a pianist came in from the Algonquin Arts
Theater and sang songs from such hit shows as Les Miserable, South Pacific, Gigi, and My Fair Lady, just to name
Algonquin Arts Theatre
3 guests - Julie Nagy, Aly Gleeson and Jan Blanton
a few. They knocked our socks off! For those who missed
this presentation, all we can say is “Sorry!”
On the 23rd, we again had a singer who crossed the
street from Greenbiar II, Josephine Araniti, “The American Songbird.” Her concert consisted of some traditional
American songs from Broadway such as Beauty and the
Beast and a medley of songs by George Gershwin and a
Diana Ross and the Supremes medley. We couldn’t ask for
anything better.
Kiwanis member Rosalie Rabito is running a trip on
New Year’s Eve to Resorts in Atlantic City for those who
would like company on the holiday. Cost will be $37.00
and will return $25.00 on slot plays along with champagne,
noise makers, etc. Bus will leave club house at 5:30 PM and
return approximately at 2:00 am in the morning. This is the
fourth year this trip has been offered and has always been
a real success. Rosalie’s phone number is 732-701-3758

Sentimental Journey

Unfortunately this was the final show for the year 2014
and what a way to end the year. It certainly was a Sentimental Journey. They were terrific. It was a thirteen member
band with a fabulous woman singer doing most of the songs
from the 30s & 40s. The show was awesome. It was better
than most of the residents thought it would be. Those old
songs certainly brought back a lot of memories from that
era both happy and sad. They were so good we could have
listened to them for another hour. What a night it would
be if we had both THE CAMEOS and SENTIMENTAL
JOURNEY here at the same time, “the roof would come
off the clubhouse.”
Thanks again to Al and his committee for presenting
us with another great show. Also Kudos to Raul for the
wonderful job he does in making our posters for all these
shows and displaying them in our lobby of the clubhouse.
This man has some talent. Thanks again as we close our
Greenbriar Curtain for the winter. Al and his committee
wish all our residents a safe and healthy winter. Hope to
see all of you for the first show in April of 2015. Thank
you for all your support.

Who Knew?
Who knew that
Greenbriar has been
privileged to have Bill
Pane as our bus driver
for over six years? “I
like working at Greenbriar, there are so many
friendly and wonderful
people. It is a privilege
to be of service to those
who do not drive. or
prefer to avoid the expense of a car;” he says.
Greenbriar has bus service six days a week with a diverse bus schedule. There are daily trips to local grocery
stores as well as once a week trips to the mall and Sunday
morning trips to church. Residents have the options of
morning or afternoon trips. “Some folks like to get out early
and get things done while others prefer to get up, leisurely
have their coffee and take the afternoon bus” Bill says. “We
provide an important service to Greenbriar residents and I
am happy to provide this service.”
Wherever the bus is going Bill tries to provide a fun
and relaxed atmosphere while at the same time making
safety a priority. “We have a good time on the bus and
joke around quite a bit” he says. “But I do take passenger
safety very seriously.”
Bill is also a published writer - Who knew? He has
appeared in the Asbury Park Press, Brick Times and various magazines. He particularly enjoyed working for the
Community Section of the Press where he reported on
interesting people and acts of community service. “I prefer
this to straight reporting. I covered a story about an Eagle
Scout who was beautifying the Wall municipal complex
with flowers and power washing for his merit badge. as
well as an older gentleman who was retiring after several
decades in law enforcement” Bill said, “they were very
different people yet both displayed a tremendous commitment to their communities. Bill recently appeared in Weird
NJ magazine, where he wrote about Camp Evans in Wall.
This army base was the site of top-secret military research
that greatly aided the war effort and led to technology that
is now part of everyday life. He also found that some interesting and mysterious characters were part of the Camp
Evans story. “Some slippery characters came through Camp
Evans” he says. “This included German scientists who were
recruited by the State Department after World War II.”
In his younger days Bill was a competitive runner who
completed both the Boston and New York Marathons. He
continues to run as part of his fitness program.
While Bill is happy working at Greenbriar he is also

ready to start a new phase in his life, retirement. He’s just
not sure where that will be. “I am looking forward to retirement. I love New Jersey, have family and friends in Florida
and sometimes the mountains in Tennessee call me” he
says. “I have also considered getting a mobile home to see
the states. I will cross that bridge when the time comes.”
Bill is also the proud owner of a car he purchased as an
18 year old, a 1966 Pontiac GTO convertible. Who knew?
Wouldn’t it be great to see Bill driving around Greenbriar
in it?

Recipe
Bulgar Meatloaf
By Barbara Swingle
1c (1 l/2 oz.) dried mushrooms: soak in warm water
for 30 minutes Or 4 oz. canned mushrooms. Drained and
coarsely chopped.
Mix: 3/4 c bulgar and 1 c. boiling water. Set aside for
30 minutes.
In a small skillet over medium heat: cook 2 tsp. olive
oil, 1 small chopped onion, and 2 cloves of garlic, minced.
Add 3 oz. tomato paste, cook 3 minutes, add 1 tb.
Worcestershire sauce.
Combine: 1 large egg, 2 egg whites, the mushrooms,
the onions, 1/4 c. fresh parsley, (or 2tp. dried) l tsp. fresh
thyme, 1/2tp salt, 1c Italian bread crumbs, the bulgar, 1 1/2
lbs. ground beef, or turkey, 1/4 c soy milk.
Spray a baking sheet with oil
Shape mixture into a loaf (use wet hands) loaf (7 x3x
2 inches)
Bake at 350 degrees for 60 minutes
Thermometer should read 160 degrees
Cool for 10 minutes.

Luncheon on October 15th. Loraine Voorhees (left) and
Jane Newton are pictured above celebrating Jane’s 99th
birthday. Happy Birthday, Jane. Loraine and Jane founded
the Scarlett Ladies Red Hat Group in the Spring of 1993
with just 7 women. Loraine has retired as “Queen Mum”
because she will be leaving Greenbriar December 2nd.

On the Road Again
(A message for all)

As many of you know I have traveled far and wide and
have seen many wondrous sights and experienced many
exotic events...But none compared to my most recent trip
over the Columbus holiday. The trip was planned and coordinated by my sister Victoria Auferio for myself, and my
other three sisters, Nellie Mauriello, Angie Di Bello and
Louise Grena (Not yet a Greenbriar resident).
The trip was from Greenbriar to the city and towns of
Cleveland, Sandusky, Marblehead, etc., etc.
The sights included the casinos along the way, Rock
and Roll Hall of Fame Cleveland Stadium as well as other
many other buildings, plazas and a foliage tour throughout
Pennsylvania, Ohio and New Jersey.
But...The best part of the trip and the greatest experience of sight and sound was realized when we realized it
was the first trip we had taken together in the past SIXTY
SOME YEARS...way too long.
Personally the best part of the trip for me was the occasional side trips down memory lane. Therefore I highly
recommend that everyone plan a similar trip with siblings
before it is TOO LATE.

population in check.

Let’s Meet: Barbara and Bob Morrison

busy with family and socializing here in Greenbriar, adding
that they see so much improvement in overall maintenance
and lawn service. It appears that management is working
together for the good of Greenbriar. Life is good!
Did You Know?
Friends are how Bob and Barbara came to Greenbriar
about 11 years ago. They joined the Bissey’s and the Johnson’s in Greenbriar for many social activities and were
encouraged to become neighbors. They enjoyed their home
in Point Pleasant, but found spending time in Florida, the
yard work became more time consuming and decided to
downsize. They looked at surrounding communities and
their present house attracted them. It faces South, and has
a huge open field in back. In these later years, Greenbriar
is an ideal place and is so well run of late. They feel they
have the best of all worlds.
Bob lived in East Brunswick for 50 years, worked for
Exxon for 40 years and had his own electrical business. He
also was in the East Brunswick Fire Company for 50 years.
Bob has 4 boys and 1 girl, 16 grands and 6 great grands.
He loves gardening, especially growing his own veggies.
Barbara grew up in Point Pleasant Beach and moved
to the Boro. She worked for Ocean First Bank for 31 years.
She started as a teller and loved working in the banking
industry, retiring as Corporate Secretary. Barbara has 4
children, 5 grands and 1 great grand. She also loves gardening, but her passion is flowers. Each year she plants a little
less, “because bending is, well you know ...”
When asked how they met, Barbara says that Bob was
looking for a square dance partner and friends suggested
they might be a good partnership. They belonged to a group
(called the Shore Swingers) and danced at the Belmar Pavilion and Point Pleasant Beach Fire Co. They became steady
partners for square dancing, but love all kinds of dance.
You will see them at the affairs in Greenbriar dancing away.
The success to their marriage they feel is their common loves: gardening, dancing, reading, friends, family
and community activities. This also holds true for Florida,
where it’s nothing for 20 people to go out for pizza at a
local restaurant and play dominoes afterwards. They keep

The First Lady

Since I was born there have been thirteen men who
have occupied the oval office in the White House. Accordingly there have been thirteen first ladies. It was my
intention to write an article about all of the first ladies,
but I accumulated so much information that it wouldn’t
be appropriate for the Greenbriar Times, so I selected just
one. I chose Eleanor Roosevelt, and found that she was an
extraordinary woman.
Born in 1884, she was a niece of President Theodore
Roosevelt, and she married her fifth cousin Franklin Delano
Roosevelt on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 1905 with Teddy
giving the bride away. She was a plain woman and had a
strange gravelly voice. She bore him six children but the
marriage was complicated due to FDR’s controlling mother.
In 1918 FDR was the Assistant Secretary of the Navy
and made a world wide tour of the Naval facilities. When
he returned he was exhausted and went straight to bed.
Unpacking his suitcase Eleanor found a bundle of love
letters to him from his Mistress Lucy Mercer who was her
Social Secretary. Eleanor was devastated and decided to
ask for a divorce. Franklin at this time was the rising star in
the Democratic Party, and a divorce would kill his political
life. Under pressure from his mother and his political aides,
she relented with the condition that they lead separate lives
which they did to a certain extent. The Roosevelt’s built a
cottage for her called “Val Kill” where she could live, not
far from Hyde Park. She was a dutiful wife. When FDR
was stricken with polio in 1921 she became his caretaker.
Although his legs were permanently paralyzed he ran for
Governor of New York, and Eleanor began serving as a
stand-in for her husband, making public appearances and
speeches on his behalf. He won easily. Eleanor became an

In 1932 the American public wasn’t aware that FDR
didn’t have use of his legs. Eleanor crossed the country
giving speeches for her husband. He won handily beating

As First Lady she started to continue to follow her
agenda, working with the Labor Unions for a 48 hour work
week, minimum wage law, the abolition of child labor, the
Civil Rights of African and Asian Americans, and safety
regulations for the coal miners in Pennsylvania, and West
Virginia. In 1943 during the height of World War II, she was
sent to the war torn Pacific to inspect the Army hospitals.
She spent six weeks there inspecting each hospital from top
to bottom, and making a full report to her husband. At the
end of each inspection she visited the soldiers in the wards.
She would stop at each bed of the wounded and ask them
to give her the names and addresses of their loved ones.
She promised to write each and every one of their loved
ones ,when she returned to Washington, which she did.
On April 12th, 1945 FDR died, and she was no longer
the First Lady. Bess Truman now held that title. Eleanor
didn’t quit politics. She continued to embark on numerous
speaking engagements, made appearances on television
and radio, and wrote a daily newspaper column. President
Truman appointed her to the United Nations in 1946, where
she served until 1953.
She died on November 7, 1962 at the age of 78. She
had a full and fulfilling life; Harry Truman said it best ...
“She was the First Lady of the world.”

How quickly the Holidays come around! It seems like
I just took down my tree, and packed away all my Mom’s
beautiful ornaments, and here I am getting ready to unpack
and start all over again.
How wonderful it is to remember the traditions handed
down by our parents and grandparents. I remember the
delicious food, warm drinks, colorful decorations, and a
great sense of peace and joy. We felt full of the warmth,
that speaks of love and peace.
How do we keep these thoughts and feelings alive
and well, throughout the new year? We will have many
challenges this year, and we have a choice, as to how we
deal with them. Will our response be negative or positive?
Will we focus on the light, and find new ways of being?
It is never too late!
As we travel our path this year, let us remember to
reach out to those in need, as we do, we keep the warmth
of caring and sharing, in their lives, as well as our own.
And so, let our intention be one of hope, peace and joy,
as we sit down for our meals with friends and love ones,
not just for a day, but always! And lets remember to share
a plate with a neighbor who may be alone! !!

Halloween Fun!!!
The Annual Holloween Party was a
great success this year, the costumes were
outstanding. Our judges had a hard time
arriving at their decision as to who was
original, colorful, scariest, etc.
Don’t you love those bees? Kiki was
the best overall and the clown was the most
colorful. Sue made a great Geisha Girl and
Kevin was definitely scary with that face.
Others who were memorable were Dan
with his mother-in-law, Rita. There is Kevin
again with, can you believe it Anna, sexy
witch Georgia, Al and Gail looked happy,
Twiggy, aka Fay, has arrived, who are the
Mad Hatter and Alice, do you know? Barbara and Joe round out some Happy Halloweeners. See you all
next year.

Holiday Images
It’s time to
prepare for the
holidays - Christmas,
Hanukkah, and New
Years. The main
subjects are family
and friends.
This time of year
we often see relatives
and loved ones that
we haven’t seen for
a while. We want to
capture the festive
atmosphere and good
time that everyone is
enjoying. What can
we do to make these
images look relaxed and more professional?
For candid shots make certain you’re prepared -- have
your camera ready and watch the subject for the expression
you want. If you aren’t ready the shot will be gone before
you press the shutter. Most holiday shots will be taken

indoors so don’t forget to use your camera’s flash.
For portraits and group shots get yourself set up first,
and then prepare your subject. If you keep them waiting
you will not get a natural relaxed image. For portraits
choose a background that’s festive, but not too busy. Have
your subject(s) turn their shoulders slightly so they are not
too square to the camera.
When photographing grandchildren or pets try to get
eye level with them, rather than shooting down at them.
I also like to photograph the festive holiday
decorations. These often make fun shots and they can be
used on your holiday cards next year.
Don’t forget the rule of thirds (also from a previous
photo tip). Rather than placing your subjects in front of the
Christmas tree, move them slightly to one side. If shooting
the dinner table set for the holiday feast, have the host stand
at one side of the table about 1/3 of the way from the end,
rather than centered at the end of the table.
These techniques will help improve your images
holiday images. Have a great holiday season, a happy and
healthy New Year and remember to have fun with your
camera.
