SHMILY
My grandparents were married for over half a century and
played their own special game from the time they had met
each other.
The goal of their game was to write the word “shmily” in
a surprise place for the other to find. They took turns leaving
“shmily” around the house, and as soon as one of them discovered
it, it was their turn to hide it once more.
They dragged “shmily” with their fingers through the sugar
and flour containers to await whomever was preparing the
next meal.
They smeared it in the dew on the windows overlooking
the patio where my grandma always fed us warm, homemade
pudding with blue food coloring.
“Shmily” was written in the steam left on the mirror after a
hot shower, where it would reappear bath after bath.
At one point, my grandmother even unrolled an entire roll
of toilet paper to leave “shmily” on the very last sheet.

There was no end to the places “shmily” would pop up.
Little notes with “shmily” scribbled hurriedly were found on
dashboards and car seats, or taped to steering wheels.
The notes were stuffed inside shoes and left under pillows.
“Shmily” was written in the dust upon the mantel and traced
in the ashes of the fireplace.
This mysterious word was as much a part of my grandparents’
house as the furniture.
It took me a long time before I was able to fully appreciate
my grandparents’ game.
Skepticism has kept me from believing in true love - one
that is pure and enduring.
However, I never doubted my grandparents’ relationship.
They had love down pat.\
It was more than their flirtatious little games; it was a way
of life.
Their relationship was based on a devotion and passionate
affection which not everyone is lucky enough to experience.
Grandma and Grandpa held hands every chance they could.
They stole kisses as they bumped into each other in their
tiny kitchen.
They finished each other’s sentences and shared the daily

crossword puzzle and word jumble. My grandma whispered to
me about how cute my grandpa was, how handsome and old
he had grown to be.
She claimed that she really knew “how to pick ‘em.”
Before every meal they bowed their heads and gave thanks,
marveling at their blessings: a wonderful family, good fortune,
and each other.
But there was a dark cloud in my grandparents’ lives: my
grandmother had breast cancer. The disease had first appeared
ten years earlier. As always, Grandpa was with her every step
of the way.
He comforted her in their yellow room, painted that way so
that she could always be surrounded by sunshine, even when
she was too sick to go outside.
Now the cancer was again attacking her body. With the
help of a cane and my grandfather’s steady hand, they went to
church every morning.

But my grandmother grew steadily weaker until, finally, she
could not leave the house anymore. For a while, Grandpa would
go to church alone, praying to God to watch over his wife.
Then one day, what we all dreaded finally happened. Grandma
was gone.
“Shmily.” It was scrawled in yellow on the pink ribbons of
my Grandmother’s funeral bouquet. As the crowd thinned and
the last mourners turned to leave, my aunts, uncles, cousins
and other family members came forward and gathered around
Grandma one last time.
Grandpa stepped up to my Grandmother’s casket, and taking
a shaky breath, he began to sing to her.
Through his tears and grief, the song came, a deep and
throaty lullaby. Shaking with my own sorrow, I will never
forget that moment.
For I knew that although I couldn’t begin to fathom the depth
of their love, I had been privileged to witness its unmatched
beauty.

“We met at a party fifty
years ago. He’d just drank a
yard of ale when I met him.
Do you have that expression
here-- ‘yard of ale?’ It’s when
you pour a pint of ale down a
tube, straight into your throat.
Anyway, he was feeling quite
good. He called me ‘funny
face’ that night. And he’s
called me ‘funny face’ ever
since. We stayed at the party
so late that we missed the last bus, and on the walk home we
planned our honeymoon.”

On The Subject Of Name Changes
- This Is Good -
No matter which side you are on in this matter, this is funny.
This guy is hilarious... Here is an e-mail sent to Clarence Page
of the Chicago Tribune after an article he published concerning
a name change for the Washington Redskins.
Dear Mr. Page...
I always love your articles and I generally agree with them. I
would suggest, as in an email I received, they change the name
to the “Foreskins” to better represent their community, paying
tribute to the dick heads in Congress.
I agree with our Native American population. I am highly
insulted by the racially charged name of the Washington
Redskins. One might argue that to name a professional football
team after Native Americans would exalt them as fine warriors,
but nay, nay. We must be careful not to offend, and in the spirit
of political correctness and courtesy, we must move forward.
Let’s ditch the Kansas City Chiefs, the Atlanta Braves and
the Cleveland Indians. If your shorts are in a wad because of
the reference the name Redskins makes to skin color, then we
need to get rid of the Cleveland Browns.

The New York Yankees offend the Southern population. Do
you see a team named for the Confederacy? No! There is no
room for any reference to that tragic war that cost this country
so many young men’s lives.
I am also offended by the blatant references to the Catholic
religion among our sports team names. Totally inappropriate
to have the New Orleans Saints, the Los Angeles Angels or
the San Diego Padres.
Then there are the team names that glorify criminals who
raped and pillaged. We are talking about the horrible Oakland
Raiders, the Minnesota Vikings, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
and the Pittsburgh Pirates!
Now, let us address those teams that clearly send the wrong
message to our children. The San Diego Chargers promote
irresponsible fighting or even spending habits. Wrong message
to our children.
The New York Giants and the San Francisco Giants promote
obesity, a growing childhood epidemic. Wrong message to
our children.
The Cincinnati Reds promote downers/barbiturates. Wrong
message to our children.
The Milwaukee Brewers. Well that goes without saying.
Wrong message to our children.
So, there you go. We need to support any legislation that
comes out to rectify this travesty, because the government will
likely become involved with this issue, as they should. Just the
kind of thing the do-nothing Congress loves.
As a diehard Oregon State fan, my wife and I, with all of this
in mind, suggest it might also make some sense to change the
name of the Oregon State women’s athletic teams to something
other than “the Beavers.”

Jet Lag Can Cause Obesity By
Disrupting The Daily Rhythms
Of Gut Microbes
Date: October 16, 2014
Source: Cell Press
Organisms ranging from bacteria to humans have circadian
clocks to help them synchronize their biological activities to
the time of day. A study published by Cell Press October 16th
in Cell now reveals that gut microbes in mice and humans have
circadian rhythms that are controlled by the biological clock of
the host in which they reside. Disruption of the circadian clock
in the host alters the rhythms and composition of the microbial
community, leading to obesity and metabolic problems.
“These findings provide an explanation for a long-standing
and mysterious observation, namely that people with chronically
disturbed day-night cycles due to repetitive jet lag or shift
work have a tendency to develop obesity and other metabolic
complications,” says senior study author Eran Elinav of the
Weizmann Institute of Science. “These surprising findings may
enable us to devise preventive treatments for these people to
lower their risk for these complications.”
Disruption of the circadian clock in humans is a hallmark
of relatively recent lifestyle changes involving chronic shift
work or frequent flights across time zones. These widespread
behavioral patterns have been linked to a wide range of diseases,
including obesity, diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular disease.
But, until now, it has not been clear how changes in circadian
rhythms increase the risk for these diseases.
In the new study, Elinav and his team set out to determine
whether gut microbes could be the missing link. When they

analyzed microbes found in fecal samples collected from mice
and humans at different times of day, they discovered rhythmic
fluctuations in the abundance of microbes and their biological
activities. The host’s circadian clock and normal feeding habits
were required for the generation of these rhythmic fluctuations
in the gut microbes.
When mice were exposed to changing light-dark schedules
and abnormal 24 hr feeding habits, the microbial community
lost its rhythmic fluctuations and changed in composition.
Moreover, a high-fat diet caused these jet-lagged mice to
gain weight and develop metabolic problems associated with
diabetes. Similarly, jet lag in two humans who had traveled
from the United States to Israel changed the composition of
gut microbes, favoring the growth of bacteria that have been
linked to obesity and metabolic disease.
“Our findings highlight a new therapeutic target that may
be exploited in future studies to normalize the microbiota in
those people whose lifestyle involves frequent alterations in
sleep patterns, such as shift workers and very frequent fliers,”
Elinav says. “Targeting the harmful changes in the microbiota
in these large human populations with probiotic or antimicrobial
therapies may reduce or even prevent their risk of developing
obesity and its complications.”

Murphy’s Law: Islam And The
Cure Worse Than Death
October 14, 2014: StragetyPages.com - Moslems in general
and Arabs in particular have developed a peculiar relationship
with democracy. Since the 1960s, when many Moslems were
able migrate to the West, millions of Moslems have come to
understand democracy from personal experience. They did this
either by moving to live in the West, or being visited by family
or friends who had and were eager to explain this curious but
wonderful form of government in great detail. As a result of
this opinion polls in Moslem countries have shown a growing
approval of democracy. This was especially true in 2011 after
the Arab Spring uprisings. But since 2011 that approval of
democracy has dimmed a bit as Moslems unaccustomed to
running a democracy found that doing so was not easy. A
majority of Moslems still think democracy is the best form
of government, but a quarter of Moslems also believe that
democracy may be unsuitable for Moslem countries at this
time. This disappoints and confuses many Moslems. They
can see that democracy creates superior results where is has
been established, but the process of getting democracy to work
reliably is a lot harder and more difficult than many Moslems
originally believed. This is largely because of some unique
problems in Moslem states.
One of the unique problems is opposition from some Islamic
conservatives. This is made worse because many Arabs believe
what al Qaeda preaches, that the world should be ruled by an
Islamic religious dictatorship, and that this must be achieved
by any means necessary (including force against non-Moslems
and Moslems who don’t agree.) This sort of thinking has been
popular with Islamic conservatives since Islam first appeared in
the sixth century. Since then, it has periodically flared up into
major outbreaks of religious inspired violence. But that’s not
the only problem. Arabs, in particular, sustain these outbursts
with their fondness for paranoid fantasies and an exaggerated
sense of persecution and entitlement. For example, most Arabs
believe that the September 11, 2001 attacks were not carried out
by Arabs, but were a CIA scam, to provide an excuse for the West

to make war on Islam. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. U.S.
troops in Iraq were amazed at the number of fantastical beliefs
that were accepted as reality there. Then there is the corruption
and intense hatreds. It’s a very volatile and unpredictable part
of the world, and always has been.
In first decade of the 21st century if became popular to call
many of these Moslem countries who were having trouble
establishing democracy “failed states.” This became the generic
term for unstable countries that were prone to rebellion and
civil disorder. What they all have in common is a lack of “civil
society” (rule of, and respect for, law), and lots of corruption.
The two sort of go together.
The best example of a failed state has long been Somalia, and
that’s largely because the concept of the “nation of Somalia” is
a very recent development (the 1960s). It never caught on. Same
could be said for the Palestinians. Sudan is accused of being a
failed state, but it isn’t in the same league with Somalia. Sudan
has had central government of sorts, on and off, for thousands
of years. Not so Somalia.
Another common problem in failed states is a large number
of ethnic groups. This is a common curse throughout Africa,
which is why the majority of the worst failed states are there.
Europe, and much of Asia, have managed to get past tribalism,
although that has not always resulted in a civil society. Tribalism
has kept most African nations from making much economic
progress. The top failed states tend to be African, Moslem or
both. Somalia is also unique in that it is one of those rare African
nations that is not ethnically diverse. Instead, Somalia suffers
from clan animosities and severe warlordism.
There’s a similar problem in the Middle East. For example,
two current hot spots, Iraq and Afghanistan, have long been
torn apart by tribal and religious animosities. Same with the
Balkans and parts of India and Pakistan. Perhaps the most

Meanwhile many Moslem leaders have absorbed all this and
come up with their own solution. This has not been easy. For
example, for years the king of Saudi Arabia has been telling
other Arab leader that they are the problem and you can take that
as a sign of progress. But real progress it ain’t. Arab leaders are
victims of their own success. Their rule is based on corruption
and police state tactics.
Think East Europe before 1989. Big difference is that,
although the populations of East Europe then, and the Arab
world now, were both fed up with their leaders and governments,
the Arabs were not willing to make as painless a switch as
the East Europeans did in the 1990s. That’s because the East
Europeans had two choices; communism or democracy. The
Arabs have four; despotism, democracy, tribal factionalism or
Islamic dictatorship.
In Iraq and Gaza we see how the Islamic radicals react to
democracy. They call it un-Islamic and kill those who disagree
with them. The Arabs have to deal with this, and in Iraq they
are. In Gaza they aren’t. But the violence in Iraq has revealed
another Arab problem. Even if you remove religion from the
equation, not all Arabs are keen on democracy. In Iraq, the Sunni
Arab minority believe it is their right (or responsibility) to run
the country. This is a common pattern in Arab countries. One
minority believes they are rulers by right, and that democracy
is an abomination and un-Islamic (or at least inconvenient for
the ruling minority). This is the pattern in nearly every Arab
country.
Like South Africa, India and a lot of other places where
“democracy won’t work,” it does. Not democracy like in the
United States, or Europe, or anywhere else. Every democracy
is different, just like every culture is different. Democracy is
a messy, inefficient form of government, but compared to all
the others, it tends to be preferred by most people.
Arabs, even Arab leaders, know they need democracy.
They have tried everything else, and nothing else works. But
democracy is strong medicine for Arabs, and many would rather
just talk about it, and go no further. And that is the problem in
the Arab world. Islamic terrorism is the result.

Earlville Galleries to Present
The Paintings Of
Maria Rizzo and John Loy
The Earlville Galleries open two new exhibits of central
New York artists in November. Maria Rizzo’s paintings are an
invitation to “escape from the daily stress of life and to refocus
on what is important, to pause, take a deep breath, and rejoice
in the colors of nature.” During long walks as a child with
her mother in a park near their home in Bologna, Italy, Rizzo
began to experience a deep connection between her life and
the lives of trees. The East Syracuse artist recalls a lifelong
difficulty expressing herself in words, a barrier that made a
frustrating and solitary childhood, until her mother introduced
her to drawing and painting. Rizzo’s paintings have been exhibited in solo and group
exhibitions in galleries and museums throughout the northeast
US and abroad. In addition to the 2014 Individual Artist
Commission from CNY Arts, she is the former Artist-inResidence and Curator at The Tech Garden in Syracuse, and she
is a 2012 New York Foundation for the Arts MARK alumna.

glaring example of a failed state caused by too much diversity
is Papua New Guinea, on the eastern portion of the island of
New Guinea (north of Australia). Papua New Guinea has over
800 languages (and even more tribes.) It has been in chaos,
of one form or another, since becoming a nation 35 years
ago. There is no Islam involved here as most of the locals are
Christian or pagans.
No one has come up with a quick, or easy, solution for
failed states. It’s all a matter of effective local leadership, and
that frequently fails to show up. There has been some success
in helping good leaders develop, by assisting with installing
a democracy. But just letting the people vote often leads to
someone, who looked like a good guy, turning into a dictatorial
“president for life.” Haiti has, for two centuries, trying to develop
a civil society, and for over a century has been using democracy
in that effort. Has not worked, and prospects are bleak.
Iraq is being keenly watched by the Arab world. It’s one of
only few Arab states to have held free and fair elections lately.
Iraq, however, is in the center of the Arab world, and its success,
or failure, as a democracy, will determine how well democracy
will fair in the region. Thus the current struggle with ISIL takes
on an added urgency.
The consensus so far is that the old reasons (outside
interference) for the poor government in Arab states no longer
apply. Since the 1950s, centuries of Turkish, and, more recently,
a few decades of European rule, were to blame. Tiny Israel
also got some blame. But it’s become obvious that the Turks,
Europeans and Israelis are not the cause. The problems are
internal, and the search is on for workable solutions.
One exemplary leader can make a difference. Examples
abound. Kemal Ataturk, more than any of his close followers
and advisors, turned Turkey from a medieval monarchy, into a
functioning democracy. India also had a handful of strong leaders
early on who achieved what many believed impossible, and
created the world’s largest (over a billion people) democracy.
Neither Turkey nor India are as efficient and prosperous as many
older democracies. But compared to many of their neighbors,
Turkey and India are beacons of hope in an otherwise dreary
political landscape. Alas, they are the exception, not the rule, and
this sorry state of affairs will continue for the foreseeable future.

the bushes were covered with Monarch Butterflies. We gazed
at them and remarked how beautiful they were.
Making our way back to the house, the BUTTERFLIES began
to SWARM over our heads. My husband said: ‘Look Honey!’
Thousands of butterflies were SWARMING AROUND HIM
landing on his SHOULDERS AND HANDS.
They finally flew away and we went on our way. I DIDN’T
KNOW at the time he had CANCER. Three years later he
PASSED AWAY from kidney cancer.
Not long ago I came out from church and there on the
windshield of the car were TWO dead Monarch BUTTERFLIES.
I carefully saved them and later painted a picture and MOUNTED
THEM to it.
It seems, EVER SINCE THEN, whenever I feel GRIEF
AND LONELINESS for my husband, I SEE A MONARCH
BUTTERFLY.
I believe God is reminding me of Heaven, and WE WILL
BE TOGETHER AGAIN someday.”

his passion. Always attracted to abstraction for the creative
freedom and challenge it offers, he eventually realized that
he is “inherently a perfectionist with a need for control.” In
the 1970s, he began exploring collage and was “endlessly
fascinated by the manipulation and juxtaposition of fragmented
shapes, colors, patterns, and images.” He says his paintings are
essentially about color, shape, pattern, movement, and space, and
his “primary intention is to create a unique visual experience.”

called on to save the Moslem world from ISIL can be permitted
to unintentionally kill Moslem civilians along the way. This
is much less of a problem for Moslem warplanes, but the
Moslem world has far fewer capable pilots to carry out a large
scale and sustained air campaign against ISIL. This situation
cannot be discussed openly, but everyone knows it exists and
the behavior of Moslem leaders and media over the last few
decades provides ample proof.
Because of the fear of civilian casualties the air operations
against ISIL have lots of restrictions on them and that means
the approval of senior political or military leaders before targets
can be hit. Thus ISIL knows that if they keep moving they will
likely not be attacked from the air. ISIL can be seen exploiting
this in western Iraq (Anbar province) where convoys of ISIL
fighters appear to operate with impunity by constantly moving
and hitting government troops and towns controlled by Sunni
tribes hostile to ISIL.

American military leaders are disappointed at not being
allowed to go after the mobile ISIL units as is the case in
Afghanistan against the Taliban. Civilian casualties are less of
a problem in Afghanistan because Afghans admit such deaths
are very low and that over 95 percent of civilian deaths are
the result of operations by the Taliban (mainly) and Afghan
security forces. Arabs, however, are notoriously more sensitive
about non-Moslems killing civilians so U.S. commanders who
know what works in Afghanistan cannot use their forces that
way in Iraq, at least not yet. The Western generals know that
the world would not end if their political leaders allowed the
use of “Afghan rules” but so far the politicians are more afraid
of bad press than of ISIL victories. The generals believe this
will change if ISIL continues to make gains in western Iraq and
eastern Syria. But in the meantime the Western warplanes can
mainly watch and only really attack areas where ISIL is stuck

October 10, 2014: The air campaign against ISIL (Islamic
State in Iraq and the Levant) has not been extensive enough
to stop ISIL from moving around and attacking. American and
other Western nations can use air bases in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia
and the UAE (United Arab Emirates) so there is no shortage of
bases, or aircraft. There is a shortage of aggressiveness based
on a fear of civilian casualties that would be used by ISIL to
generate more public support in Moslem countries. The cult
of victimization in the Islamic (especially the Arab) world
ensures that any Moslem civilians killed by non-Moslems is
heavily criticized. Moslems killing Moslems is also condemned
but that happens all the time so it is not really news. Despite
the fact that all Moslem states have condemned ISIL, there is
no such unanimity on whether the non-Moslems states being

the Princess Ozma.
Now it was seen that the Cowardly Lion and the Hungry
Tiger were drawing behind them a splendid golden chariot, to
which they were harnessed by golden cords. The body of the
chariot was decorated on the outside with designs in clusters
of sparkling emeralds, while inside it was lined with a green
and gold satin, and the cushions of the seats were of green
plush embroidered in gold with a crown, underneath which
was a monogram.
“Why, it’s Ozma’s own royal chariot!” exclaimed Dorothy.
“Yes,” said the Cowardly Lion; “Ozma sent us to meet you
here, for she feared you would be weary with your long walk
and she wished you to enter the City in a style becoming your

“What!” cried Polly, looking at Dorothy curiously. “Do you

“Well, I don’t have to work any in Oz, either,” said Dorothy.
“It’s kind of fun to be a Princess once in a while; don’t you

a big bunch of keys suspended on the golden chain that hung
around his neck. The chariot passed through the outer gates
into a fine arched chamber built in the thick wall, and through
the inner gates into the streets of the Emerald City.
Polychrome exclaimed in rapture at the wondrous beauty
that met her eyes on every side as they rode through this
stately and imposing City, the equal of which has never been
discovered, even in Fairyland. Button-Bright could only say
“My!” so amazing was the sight; but his eyes were wide open
and he tried to look in every direction at the same time, so as
not to miss anything.
The shaggy man was fairly astounded at what he saw, for
the graceful and handsome buildings were covered with plates
of gold and set with emeralds so splendid and valuable that
in any other part of the world any one of them would have
been worth a fortune to its owner. The sidewalks were superb
marble slabs polished as smooth as glass, and the curbs that
separated the walks from the broad street were also set thick
with clustered emeralds. There were many people on these
walks--men, women and children--all dressed in handsome
garments of silk or satin or velvet, with beautiful jewels. Better
even than this: all seemed happy and contented, for their faces
were smiling and free from care, and music and laughter might

the shaggy man. “I do hope

The chariot, winding through many charming streets, paused
before a building so vast and noble and elegant that even ButtonBright guessed at once that it was the Royal Palace. Its gardens
and ample grounds were surrounded by a separate wall, not
so high or thick as the wall around the City, but more daintily
designed and built all of green marble. The gates flew open as
the chariot appeared before them, and the Cowardly Lion and
Hungry Tiger trotted up a jeweled driveway to the front door
of the palace and stopped short.
“Here we are!” said Dorothy, gaily, and helped Button-Bright
from the chariot. Polychrome leaped out lightly after them, and
they were greeted by a crowd of gorgeously dressed servants
who bowed low as the visitors mounted the marble steps. At
their head was a pretty little maid with dark hair and eyes,
dressed all in green embroidered with silver. Dorothy ran up

“O, Jellia Jamb! I’m so glad to see you again. Where’s Ozma?”
“In her room, your Highness,” replied the little maid
demurely, for this was Ozma’s favorite attendant. “She wishes
you to come to her as soon as you have rested and changed
your dress, Princess Dorothy. And you and your friends are to
dine with her this evening.”
“When is her birthday, Jellia?” asked the girl.
“Day after to-morrow, your Highness.”
“And where’s the Scarecrow?”
“He’s gone into the Munchkin country to get some fresh straw
to stuff himself with, in honor of Ozma’s celebration,” replied
the maid. “He returns to the Emerald City to-morrow, he said.”
By this time, Tok-tok, the Tin Woodman, and the shaggy
man had arrived and the chariot had gone around to the back
of the palace, Billina going with the Lion and Tiger to see her
chickens after her absence from them. But Toto stayed close
beside Dorothy.
“Come in, please,” said Jellia Jamb; “it shall be our pleasant
duty to escort all of you to the rooms prepared for your use.”
The shaggy man hesitated. Dorothy had never known him
to be ashamed of his shaggy looks before, but now that he was
surrounded by so much magnificence and splendor the shaggy
man felt sadly out of place.
Dorothy assured him that all her friends were welcome at
Ozma’s palace, so he carefully dusted his shaggy shoes with his
shaggy handkerchief and entered the grand hall after the others.
