Magic, Movies, and More at the
Cazenovia Public Library
Irish Magic Show: Wednesday, March 4th at 6:30 pm in
the Library Community Room. Children of all ages delight in
the charm and enchantment of magical Ireland.
To introduce them to a clan of intriguing characters from
Irish children’s literature, magician Debbie O’Carroll’s “Irish
Magic Show” blends amazing stage magic with zany physical
comedy, and lots of audience participation.
They will meet a comical ghostly Pooka and participate in
an Irish language poem about a Banshee. They will discover
the secrets of the Gruagach, meet an elusive sea serpent
called the Ollphéist, encounter a crafty Far Darrig as well as a
mischievous Leprechaun.

Return to Pixie Hollow for a heartwarming adventure where
fun and talented animal fairy Fawn believes you can’t judge
a book by its cover—or an animal by its fangs. She befriends
a huge and mysterious creature known as the Never Beast,
but Tinker Bell and her friends aren’t so sure about this scary
addition to Pixie Hollow.
When the elite Scout Fairies set out to capture the monster
before he destroys their home, Fawn must take a leap of faith
if she hopes to rally her fairy friends to save the Never Beast.
From Disneytoon Studios, Tinker Bell and the Legend of the
Never Beast is rated G and runs for 76 minutes. Free popcorn.
LEGO My Library: Monday, March 9th at 3:30 pm in the
Library Community Room
Children ages 4 and older and their families are invited to
the popular LEGO My Library program. Using the Library’s
collection of LEGO and Duplo blocks, children and their
families will have the opportunity to build and create something
spectacular.
The Library is a place for discovery and imagination, and
this building program fits that mission. Building offers children
the experience of making their imaginative musings come to
life. By introducing them to these hands-on experiences with
science and math, children not only learn how to build different
structures but also how to make them stronger and taller.

“A COMPLETE AUCTION SERVICE”
Great Minds Lecture Series: Tuesday, March 10th at 7:00
pm in the Library Community Room
“A Consideration of Rollo May: the Father of Existential
Psychotherapy” will be presented by Dr. Michael Holdren,
Associate Professor of Psychology at Cazenovia College.
Rollo May’s synthesis of Freudian Psychoanalysis and
Kierkegaardian Existentialism provides contemporary insight as
we struggle with the anxieties and emptiness of an increasingly
lost and lonely existence amid a sea of changing values and
technologies.
As May noted, “technology is the knack of so arranging the
world that we do not experience it.” So how can we shake the
technology fatigue and malaise? In his lecture, Dr. Holdren will
cover how Rollo May stresses the importance of slowing down
and reconnecting with nature, ourselves and others.

1 frozen puff pastry sheet, thawed, cut in half
Directions
1.In a small bowl, use a fork to combine crushed garlic and
egg yolk. Place chicken breasts in a shallow glass dish and
spread both sides with egg mixture. Cover dish with plastic
wrap and refrigerate 4 hours, or overnight (recommended).
2.Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Grease
a baking sheet.
3.Place one half of the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured
board. Place 1/2 cup spinach in the center of the pastry sheet.
Remove one chicken breast from marinade, shaking off any
excess, and place on top of spinach. Spread 1 tablespoon pesto
over chicken, layer with half the sun-dried tomatoes, sprinkle
with half the feta cheese, and top with 1/2 cup spinach. Fold
pastry sheet around chicken, using fingers or fork to seal
pastry seam. Place chicken seam side down on baking sheet.
Repeat steps with the second half of the puff pastry sheet and
remaining chicken breast.
4.Bake 35 to 40 minutes. Test for doneness by cutting through
center of chicken breast; if juices run clear, chicken is cooked.

New Brain Mapping Reveals
Unknown Cell Types
Date: February 19, 2015
Source: Karolinska Institutet
Using a process known as single cell sequencing, scientists
at Karolinska Institutet have produced a detailed map of cortical
cell types and the genes active within them. The study, which
is published in the journal Science, marks the first time this
method of analysis has been used on such a large scale on such
complex tissue. The team studied over three thousand cells, one
at a time, and even managed to identify a number of hitherto
unknown types.
“If you compare the brain to a fruit salad, you could say
that previous methods were like running the fruit through a
blender and seeing what colour juice you got from different
parts of the brain,” says Sten Linnarsson, senior researcher
at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics.
“But in recent years we’ve developed much more sensitive
methods of analysis that allow us to see which genes are active
in individual cells. This is like taking pieces of the fruit salad,
examining them one by one and then sorting them into piles to
see how many different kinds of fruit it contains, what they’re
made up of and how they interrelate.”

The knowledge that all living organisms are built up of cells
is almost 200 years old. Since the discovery was made by a
group of 19th century German scientists, we have also learnt
that the nature of a particular body tissue is determined by its
constituent cells, which are, in turn, determined by which genes
are active in their DNA. However, little is still known about
how this happens in detail, especially as regards the brain, the
body’s most complex organ.
In the present study, the scientists used large-scale single-cell
analysis to answer some of these questions. By studying over
three thousand cells from the cerebral cortex in mice, one at a
time and in detail, and comparing which of the 20,000 genes
were active in each one, they were able to sort the cells into
virtual piles. They identified 47 different kinds of cell, including
a large proportion of specialised neurons, some blood vessel
cells and glial cells, which take care of waste products, protect
against infection and supply nerve cells with nutrients.
With the help of this detailed map, the scientists were able
to identify hitherto unknown cell types, including a nerve cell
in the most superficial cortical layer, and six different types
of oligodendrocyte, which are cells that form the electrically
insulating myelin sheath around the nerve cells. The new
knowledge the project has generated can shed more light on
diseases that affect the myelin, such as multiple sclerosis (MS).

“We could also confirm previous findings, such as that the
pyramidal cells of the cerebral cortex are functionally organised
in layers,” says Jens Hjerling-Leffler, who co-led the study
with Dr Linnarsson. “But above all, we have created a much
more detailed map of the cells of the brain that describes each
cell type in detail and shows which genes are active in it. This
gives science a new tool for studying these cell types in disease
models and helps us to understand better how brain cell respond
to disease and injury.”
There are estimated to be 100 million cells in a mouse brain,
and 65 billion in a human brain. Nerve cells are approximately
20 micrometres in diameter, glial cells about 10 micrometres.
A micrometre is equivalent to a thousandth of a millimetre.

Letter to the Editor On Behalf
of Maureen Louis:
February 13, 2015
To the Editor:
I have two sons. Like all parents, I would like both of them
to lead happy and full lives, with opportunity for learning,
employment, and service to others. As parents, we spend years
of time and energy to foster our children, and as high school
ends they head off to college or employment or both.
Parents of children with developmental disabilities have
these same goals for their kids. Yet the picture can be more
complicated. Some developmentally disabled adults may not
be able to secure employment in the competitive market. Some
may need support in other areas too, particularly housing.

Governor Cuomo recently vetoed four bills pertaining to
services for disabled people. Among other things, these vetoes
mean the end of sheltered workshops in New York State.
Sheltered workshops are small businesses run by not-for-profit
agencies that provide employment in a caring environment for
developmentally disabled people. Pursuant to our Governor’s
policies, these sheltered workshops can no longer accept new
employees and those currently working in these programs will
not be able to continue.
These vetoes also mean no action to address housing needs
for adults with developmental disabilities. Right now there are
long waiting lists for supported apartments and group homes
for adults with developmental disabilities in our state. Every
person on the waiting list represents a family, often where
parents of disabled people have been primary caregivers for
decades. These parents may no longer able to provide direct
care for their grown children. These families need our help.
My son Sam is a developmentally disabled autistic person.
As Sam’s Mom, I serve as a member of the Board of Directors
of The Arc of Madison Cortland. The Arc provides support
services to more than 1000 families in the region. Next year my

The reforms and protections offered by these four bills would

Given the coverage this uprising received editors worldwide
added such religion based rebellions to their list of things to
watch for. Until the current outbreak (that actually began in the
1970s as a Moslem versus Moslem matter that was generally
ignored in the West) there were a few smaller ones (in Somalia
and Afghanistan after World War I) that received some media
attention in the West because they were considered “colorful”
(and outrageous).
With the spread of television and cheap cassette recordings
in the late 20th century those Moslems seeking to use mass
media to trigger and sustain another “Islamic uprising” found

communications tools that could be used to inflame a largely
illiterate audience. All these Islamic uprisings had featured
illiterates being most of the killers and most of the innocent
victims. Most Moslems were then and are now largely illiterate
and normally roused by speakers who could give inspiring
speeches. Such speakers are rare and rarely are enough of them
inclined, at the same time, to back a religious uprising to get
one going. But this new media for illiterates changed all that.
This led to the appearance of more Islamic rebel movements in
the 1970s and several of those merged to produce the current
Islamic terrorism mess the world is faced with.
Another change occurred in the 1990s when some Islamic
terrorists decided that attacking targets in the non-Moslem world
would be of some benefit to them. It didn’t turn out that way but
it is still fashionable to urge Moslems to commit violence in the
name of Islam in the West. It turned out that this appealed to
the sense of resentment and victimization in the Moslem world.
Now many Moslems knew then (and even more acknowledge
it now) that the cultural, economic and governance problems in
the Islamic world are due to internal, not external influences. If

Morale: The Unwanted Dead
February 16, 2015: The growing international hatred of ISIL
has created yet another problem for Iraq. Over the last few
months a growing number of Western and Moslem countries
have refused to accept the bodies of ISIL men killed in Iraq but
then identified as foreigners. This is a delicate matter because
Moslem custom encourages respect for the dead and prompt
burial. The families of these dead ISIL members want to bury
them but their governments do not want to show any respect to
ISIL at all. Some Western nations have taken away the citizenship
of men who were identified as dying for ISIL and refuse to have
anything to do with the deceased non-citizens. Iraq does not
want to be responsible for the burial of these men as it would
create a shrine for current or future Islamic terrorists. The U.S.
suggests burying them at sea, with the proper Islamic prayers
and a cleric in attendance. This is accepted by most Islamic
clergy and may be the best solution to a problem that keeps
getting worse as the number of unwanted corpses increases.
Leadership: The Diehards
February 12, 2015: For over a thousand years the non-Islamic
world largely ignored the periodic outbreaks of terrorism and
mass murder in Moslem majority nations. With the appearance
of the mass media in the 19th century (and the need for
unending catastrophes to attract readers) that began to change.
The Sudanese Mahdi (“redeemer”) uprising of the 1870s was
initially a strictly Moslem versus Moslem affair but the British
got involved and that attracted first British then other mass
circulation newspapers. The Mahdi uprising burned itself out
after about a decade as so as many had before it. There was

That is normal. The leaders of Nazi Germany and Imperial
Japan believed in their cause until the end. Which in many
cases was a hanging after a war crimes trial. We see the same
thing being played out in Russia today with many veterans of
the Cold War, who now run the country, insisting that seeking
to rebuild the Russian empire is destiny and worth any price.
Scary stuff, but it never seems to go away no matter how many
times this sort of logic is proven false.

anything the many scientific and cultural advances in the nonMoslem world have been of great benefit to Moslems. Better
medicine and technology in general were quickly accepted, but
so was the idea that gratitude should be replaced with hatred
for how the West was somehow holding the Islamic world back
and scheming to keep Moslems backward and weak.
Gradually it dawned on many Moslems that all the Islamic
terrorism killed far more Moslems than non-Moslems and the
few attacks in the West merely made the West less willing to
tolerate such misbehavior or be helpful to the Moslem world.
The current Islamic terrorism features numerous videos of
Islamic terrorists killing captives (most of them Moslems) in
exotic fashion (beheading, burning, stoning, crucifixion and
so on). This sort of thing is meant to terrorize Moslems and
non-Moslems alike into submission but it has just the opposite
effect. It enrages Moslems and non-Moslems and speeds the
demise of the current outbreak of Islamic terrorism.
Leaders of Islamic terror groups will continue insisting that
all this violence, since it is inspired and approved by God, will
work and it must work. These leaders will never (with a few
exceptions) realize that they have been delusional all along.

I continued, ‘Well, then why are you crying?’

powers sufficient to destroy
and conquer the Land of Oz.
We will get them on our side,
band them all together, and then take Ozma and her people by
surprise. It’s all very simple and easy when you know how.
Alone, we should be helpless to injure the Ruler of Oz, but
with the aid of the evil powers we can summon we shall easily
succeed.”
King Roquat was delighted with this idea, for he realized
how clever it was.
“Surely, Guph, you are the greatest General I have ever
had!” he exclaimed, his eyes sparkling with joy. “You must go
at once and make arrangements with the evil powers to assist
us, and meantime I’ll begin to dig the tunnel.”
“I thought you’d agree with me, Roquat,” replied the new
General. “I’ll start this very afternoon to visit the Chief of the
Whimsies.”

Button-Bright was a good walker and did not tire easily. At
length as they turned a curve in the road they beheld just before
them a curious sight.
A little girl, radiant and beautiful, shapely as a fairy and
exquisitely dressed, was dancing gracefully in the middle of the
lonely road, whirling slowly this way and that, her dainty feet
twinkling in sprightly fashion. She was clad in flowing, fluffy
robes of soft material that reminded Dorothy of woven cobwebs,
only it was colored in soft tintings of violet, rose, topaz, olive,
azure, and white, mingled together most harmoniously in stripes
which melted one into the other with soft blendings. Her hair
was like spun gold and flowed around her in a cloud, no strand
being fastened or confined by either pin or ornament or ribbon.
Filled with wonder and admiration our friends approached
and stood watching this fascinating dance. The girl was no
taller than Dorothy, although more slender; nor did she seem
any older than our little heroine.

Suddenly she paused and abandoned the dance, as if for the
first time observing the presence of strangers. As she faced
them, shy as a frightened fawn, poised upon one foot as if to
fly the next instant, Dorothy was astonished to see tears flowing
from her violet eyes and trickling down her lovely rose-hued
cheeks. That the dainty maiden should dance and weep at the
same time was indeed surprising; so Dorothy asked in a soft,
sympathetic voice:
“Are you unhappy, little girl?”
“Very!” was the reply; “I am lost.”
“Why, so are we,” said Dorothy, smiling; “but we don’t
cry about it.”
“Don’t you? Why not?”
“’Cause I’ve been lost before, and always got found again,”
answered Dorothy simply.
“But I’ve never been lost before,” murmured the dainty
maiden, “and I’m worried and afraid.”

“You were dancing,” remarked Dorothy, in a puzzled tone
of voice.
“Oh, that was just to keep warm,” explained the maiden,
quickly. “It was not because I felt happy or gay, I assure you.”
Dorothy looked at her closely. Her gauzy flowing robes
might not be very warm, yet the weather wasn’t at all chilly,
but rather mild and balmy, like a spring day.
“Who are you, dear?” she asked, gently.
“I’m Polychrome,” was the reply.
“Polly whom?”
“Polychrome. I’m the Daughter of the Rainbow.”
“Oh!” said Dorothy with a gasp; “I didn’t know the Rainbow
had children. But I MIGHT have known it, before you spoke.
You couldn’t really be anything else.”
“Why not?” inquired Polychrome, as if surprised.
“Because you’re so lovely and sweet.”
The little maiden smiled through her tears, came up to
Dorothy, and placed her slender fingers in the Kansas girl’s
chubby hand.
“You’ll be my friend--won’t you?” she said, pleadingly.
“Of course.”
“And what is your name?”

“I’m Dorothy; and this is my friend Shaggy Man, who owns
the Love Magnet; and this is Button-Bright--only you don’t see
him as he really is because the Fox-King carelessly changed his
head into a fox head. But the real Button-Bright is good to look
at, and I hope to get him changed back to himself, some time.”
The Rainbow’s Daughter nodded cheerfully, no longer afraid
of her new companions.
“But who is this?” she asked, pointing to Toto, who was
sitting before her wagging his tail in the most friendly manner
and admiring the pretty maid with his bright eyes. “Is this, also,
some enchanted person?”
“Oh no, Polly--I may call you Polly, mayn’t I? Your whole
name’s awful hard to say.”
“Call me Polly if you wish, Dorothy.”
“Well, Polly, Toto’s just a dog; but he has more sense than
Button-Bright, to tell the truth; and I’m very fond of him.”
“So am I,” said Polychrome, bending gracefully to pat
Toto’s head.
“But how did the Rainbow’s Daughter ever get on this
lonely road, and become lost?” asked the shaggy man, who
had listened wonderingly to all this.
“Why, my father stretched his rainbow over here this morning,
so that one end of it touched this road,” was the reply; “and I was
dancing upon the pretty rays, as I love to do, and never noticed I
was getting too far over the bend in the circle. Suddenly I began
to slide, and I went faster and faster until at last I bumped on
the ground, at the very end. Just then father lifted the rainbow
again, without noticing me at all, and though I tried to seize
the end of it and hold fast, it melted away entirely and I was
left alone and helpless on the cold, hard earth!”
“It doesn’t seem cold to me, Polly,” said Dorothy; “but
perhaps you’re not warmly dressed.”
