Understanding How Cancer
Cells Metastasize
Date: February 27, 2015
Source: McGill University
A protein commonly found in human cells could be an
important switch that activates cancer cell metastasis, according
to a new study by researchers at the Montreal Neurological
Institute and Hospital -- The Neuro at McGill University and
the MUHC. The finding focuses attention on a biological
mechanism that until now was largely overlooked. The discovery
of the protein’s effect significantly expands our understanding
of epithelial cancers such as breast and lung cancer.
The study examined the function of a protein called
DENND2B. During childhood development, DENND2B likely

plays a role in the normal migration of cells. In adults, cell
migration is greatly reduced, but in the case of cancer, there
is unwanted cell migration, contributing to one of the most
puzzling aspects of cancer cells -- metastasis to new locations.
“DENND2B activates another protein in the cell called
Rab13, which is an enzyme that promotes cell migration,” says
Dr. Peter McPherson, a principal researcher whose laboratory
at The Neuro made the discovery. “Until now, we didn’t know
how Rab13 was activated to initiate cell migration.”

Maria Ioannou, a graduate student in Dr. McPherson’s
laboratory, found that Rab13 has an unusually high degree
of expression in many forms of cancer, especially epithelial
cancers that often metastasize to the brain.
“It was important to see exactly where in the cell Rab13
was being turned on,” says Ioannou. “Where it’s activated is
important for figuring out how it functions. We saw that the
DENND2B protein was activating Rab13 at the leading edge
of the cell, an important point for cell migration.”
Dr. McPherson sees Rab13 as a focus for future research
into cancer therapies. His laboratory showed a significant
result when, in collaboration with Dr. Morag Park at the
Goodman Cancer Centre at McGill University, they injected
highly aggressive human breast cancer cells into mice under
two conditions -- one with cells having high levels of Rab13
protein, and one in which Rab13 was artificially removed.
“In the case of the cells with reduced Rab13 levels, the
cancer either did not grow at all or formed a smaller tumour,”
notes Dr. McPherson. “Furthermore, the smaller tumour did
not metastasize into other tissue.”

Mars: The Planet That Lost An
Ocean’s Worth Of Water
Date: March 5, 2015
Source: European Southern Observatory - ESO
A primitive ocean on Mars held more water than Earth’s
Arctic Ocean, and covered a greater portion of the planet’s
surface than the Atlantic Ocean does on Earth, according to
new results published today. An international team of scientists
used ESO’s Very Large Telescope, along with instruments at
the W. M. Keck Observatory and the NASA Infrared Telescope
Facility, to monitor the atmosphere of the planet and map out the
properties of the water in different parts of Mars’s atmosphere
over a six-year period. These new maps are the first of their kind.

one oxygen, H2O. The other is HDO, or semi-heavy water, a
naturally occurring variation in which one hydrogen atom is
replaced by a heavier form, called deuterium.
As the deuterated form is heavier than normal water, it is
less easily lost into space through evaporation. So, the greater
the water loss from the planet, the greater the ratio of HDO to
H2O in the water that remains.
The researchers distinguished the chemical signatures of the
two types of water using ESO’s Very Large Telescope in Chile,
along with instruments at the W. M. Keck Observatory and the
NASA Infrared Telescope Facility in Hawaii. By comparing the
ratio of HDO to H2O, scientists can measure by how much the
fraction of HDO has increased and thus determine how much
water has escaped into space. This in turn allows the amount
of water on Mars at earlier times to be estimated.

In the study, the team mapped the distribution of H2O and
HDO repeatedly over nearly six Earth years -- equal to about
three Mars years -- producing global snapshots of each, as
well as their ratio. The maps reveal seasonal changes and
microclimates, even though modern Mars is essentially a desert.
Ulli Kaeufl of ESO, who was responsible for building one
of the instruments used in this study and is a co-author of the
new paper, adds: “I am again overwhelmed by how much power
there is in remote sensing on other planets using astronomical
telescopes: we found an ancient ocean more than 100 million
kilometres away!”
The team was especially interested in regions near the north
and south poles, because the polar ice caps are the planet’s
largest known reservoir of water. The water stored there is
thought to document the evolution of Mars’s water from the
wet Noachian period, which ended about 3.7 billion years ago,
to the present.
“With Mars losing that much water, the planet was very
likely wet for a longer period of time than previously thought,
suggesting the planet might have been habitable for longer,”
said Michael Mumma, a senior scientist at Goddard and the
second author on the paper.
It is possible that Mars once had even more water, some of
which may have been deposited below the surface. Because the
new maps reveal microclimates and changes in the atmospheric
water content over time, they may also prove to be useful in
the continuing search for underground water.

WINTER RELIEF IS ON THE WAY
The results appear online in the journal Science today.
About four billion years ago, the young planet would have
had enough water to cover its entire surface in a liquid layer
about 140 metres deep, but it is more likely that the liquid
would have pooled to form an ocean occupying almost half
of Mars’s northern hemisphere, and in some regions reaching
depths greater than 1.6 kilometres.
“Our study provides a solid estimate of how much water
Mars once had, by determining how much water was lost
to space,” said Geronimo Villanueva, a scientist working at
NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland,
USA, and lead author of the new paper. “With this work, we
can better understand the history of water on Mars.”
The new estimate is based on detailed observations of two
slightly different forms of water in Mars’s atmosphere. One is
the familiar form of water, made with two hydrogen atoms and

The new results show that atmospheric water in the near-polar
region was enriched in HDO by a factor of seven relative to
Earth’s ocean water, implying that water in Mars’s permanent
ice caps is enriched eight-fold. Mars must have lost a volume
of water 6.5 times larger than the present polar caps to provide
such a high level of enrichment. The volume of Mars’s early
ocean must have been at least 20 million cubic kilometres.
Based on the surface of Mars today, a likely location for
this water would be the Northern Plains, which have long been
considered a good candidate because of their low-lying ground.
An ancient ocean there would have covered 19% of the planet’s
surface -- by comparison, the Atlantic Ocean occupies 17% of
the Earth’s surface.

but he was discovered and highly magnified so that he could
be seen more plainly, and while in this magnified condition he
had escaped. He had always remained big, and he dressed like
a dandy and was so full of knowledge and information (which
are distinct acquirements) that he had been made a Professor
and the head of the Royal College.
Dorothy had a nice visit with these old friends, and also talked
a long time with the Wizard, who was little and old and withered
and dried up, but as merry and active as a child. Afterward, she
went to see Billina’s fast-growing family of chicks.
Toto, Dorothy’s little black dog, also met with a cordial
reception. Toto was an especial friend of the Shaggy Man, and
he knew every one else. Being the only dog in the Land of Oz,

he was highly respected by the people, who believed animals
entitled to every consideration if they behaved themselves
properly.
Dorothy had four lovely rooms in the palace, which were
always reserved for her use and were called “Dorothy’s rooms.”
These consisted of a beautiful sitting room, a dressing room, a
dainty bedchamber and a big marble bathroom. And in these
rooms were everything that heart could desire, placed there
with loving thoughtfulness by Ozma for her little friend’s
use. The royal dressmakers had the little girl’s measure, so
they kept the closets in her dressing room filled with lovely
dresses of every description and suitable for every occasion.
No wonder Dorothy had refrained from bringing with her her
old calico and gingham dresses! Here everything that was dear
to a little girl’s heart was supplied in profusion, and nothing so
rich and beautiful could ever have been found in the biggest
department stores in America. Of course Dorothy enjoyed all
these luxuries, and the only reason she had heretofore preferred
to live in Kansas was because her uncle and aunt loved her and
needed her with them.
Now, however, all was to be changed, and Dorothy was really
more delighted to know that her dear relatives were to share
in her good fortune and enjoy the delights of the Land of Oz,

than she was to possess such luxury for herself.
Next morning, at Ozma’s request, Dorothy dressed herself
in a pretty sky-blue gown of rich silk, trimmed with real pearls.
The buckles of her shoes were set with pearls, too, and more
of these priceless gems were on a lovely coronet which she
wore upon her forehead. “For,” said her friend Ozma, “from
this time forth, my dear, you must assume your rightful rank
as a Princess of Oz, and being my chosen companion you must
dress in a way befitting the dignity of your position.”
Dorothy agreed to this, although she knew that neither
gowns nor jewels could make her anything else than the simple,
unaffected little girl she had always been.
As soon as they had breakfasted--the girls eating together
in Ozma’s pretty boudoir--the Ruler of Oz said:
Now, dear friend, we will use the Magic Belt to transport
your uncle and aunt from Kansas to the Emerald City. But I
think it would be fitting, in receiving such distinguished guests,
for us to sit in my Throne Room.”
“Oh, they’re not very ‘stinguished, Ozma,” said Dorothy.
“They’re just plain people, like me.”
