Mountain Biking in Bom Bom State Forest - Everyone is welcome.

General Information: There are rules and generally riding at Bom Bom and can
be ridden most times, if rules are followed. The main rule we ask is not to ride
tracks after substantial rain as bikes will damage tracks and cause
environmental damage. Most riders are aware of this condition. There are other
rules like not to litter and respect to the flora and fauna in the forest as an
example.
The rules are posted on the sign at the entrance to the Bom Bom tracks.

JADA tickets go on sale
Tickets have gone on sale for the 2014 Jacaranda Acquisitive Drawing Award
opening night.
Tickets are limited and selling fast, so people interested in attending are
encouraged to contact the Grafton Regional Gallery as soon as possible to
reserve a place.
The opening night is Friday, October 17. Viewing starts at 5:30pm and the
official order of events kicks off after 6:30pm.
The night includes live music by local groove and funk band The Ninth Chapter,
food by Vines at 129 and a pay bar operated by The Friends of the Gallery. The
Friends of the Gallery raffle will be drawn on the night.
The gala evening will be lit up by light projections on to the gallery. The 2014
JADA opening is the launch of Light Up that will see Grafton, South Grafton and
Tucabia lit up from 6.00pm to 9.00pm on a range of dates.
The opening will be the first chance for the public to see the finalists of this
nationally-recognised award and hear the announcement of the $20,000 award
recipient and $20,000 of acquisitions made by the judge of the 2014 JADA John

Lighting up the valley
Sydney' Livid Festival provided some of the inspiration for a public art project
that will literally light up parts of the Clarence Valley later this month.
The Grafton Regional Gallery will present a series of light projections in various
locations in and around Grafton as a part of this year’s Jacaranda Acquisitive
Drawing Award.
The images will be projected onto walls at the gallery, at Market Square, in
Skinner Street South Grafton, and onto a heritage shed at Tucabia.
Clarence Valley Mayor, Richie Williamson, said the veritable feast of cultural
light would highlight the JADA and help celebrate the Jacaranda Festival.
“The gallery is working with local performance event group Banksea’a to
present these captivating light shows,” he said.
“The three film makers of Banksea’a, Sammy Lovejoy, Danny Loyden and
Maddison Whitford will be on hand at the Light Ups.”
The first Light Up at the gallery is part of the gala opening of the 2014 JADA on
Friday, October 17, from 6pm. Tickets are on sale for the event, where the
winners of the $40,000 art prize will be announced.
People are invited to bring a picnic blanket and some nibbles the following night
or simply stop by on their way to dinner and enjoy this unusual sensory
experience at Market Square, Grafton. Light Up will be accompanied by music
by Grafton TAFE College music students.

Surfing the Coldstream Festival returns to Yamba. This event will be held in
Yamba CBD and Flinders Park. The festival is offered free of charge and is an
alcohol-free, family-friendly outdoor event.

Artist of the month: Josie Priddle.
The Artist for October is Josie Priddle, Josie continues to paint onto handsaws, cross cuts, diamond blades and
other metal objects. The previous rusty objects are transformed into colourful durable fun works which offer
something different for yourself or as a gift.
The theme for this display is “Animals” and features cows, horses, dogs, cats some wild animals. Three Cross Cut
Saws depict Australian rural scenes. A Cream Can shows cows in various angles with the title “Welcome To Our
Herd” The theme continues with some works for young children with a toy box, table and stools and treasure
boxes, which feature Bears. There are a variety of clocks, some humorous, some on frying pans and a baking dish.
Don’t discard anything which can be painted! An occasional table is constructed from a metal mesh base with a
diamond blade top, black and white and finished with a durable resin. This display will also have some of Josie’s
handmade bears, one fox fur, one mink, with an acrylic one hand embroidered on felt.
Josie’s work can be seen at Ferry Park Gallery throughout October, so why not pop in to view the works of a
talented lady, who she is a true first class re-cycler.
This is a beautiful and creative display which is well work a trip to Ferry Park Gallery, Pacific Highway, southern
entrance to Maclean, it’s open from 9 to 5 seven days a week and you can find more photographs on our website

The Jacaranda Acquisitive Drawing Award (JADA) is the flagship of the Grafton Regional Gallery which promotes

drawing collection.
The 2014 JADA is worth $40,000. Art critic for the Sydney Morning Herald and art historian John McDonald will
select the winning drawing for the major award of $20,000 and acquisitions up to $20,000 from the finalists
selected by a panel from entries submitted by artists throughout Australia.

Nicola’s art practice observes ad interprets the ecology of Australian landscapes and the role humans play in

Nicola will develop new work with paper installations, experimenting with layering of drawing, mono-prints and hand

Grafton To Inverell Cycle Classic – The Grafton to Inverell Cycle Classic – THE toughest
one day cycling race in Australia! Starting on the banks of the Clarence River in Downtown
Grafton and finishing a gruelling 228km later in Inverell, after a scenic yet challenging ride over
the Gibraltar Range.
Starting at 8.00am from Memorial Park, Grafton.
Over 500 cyclists compete across three grades. The A Grade race is the last round of the
National Road Series and features and leading riders and teams in Australia as they battle for
the honour of winning this prestigious race with the last chance to accumulate vital points

A spectacle usually seen only in metropolitan areas, the Jacaranda Dragon Boat Races held
on the beautiful Clarence River in Grafton is the largest regional dragon boat event in New
South Wales. With over 30 teams competing in a variety of categories, this is an event well
supported and loved by locals and visitors alike.
Held in late October, at the beginning of the famous Jacaranda Festival, the riverbank is
dotted with purple and the whole of Grafton is alive with festivities. With the river front abuzz
with the sights, sounds and colours of over 1500 people, it’s a delightful day out and worth a
visit.
25th & 26th Grafton Aero Club - Jacaranda Muster will be held at the South Grafton Airfield, 150 Vere

The ingredients for this feast of country music include more than 20 artists. Among them are
Terry Gordon O.A.M., Glenn Jones, Lindsay Waddington, The Kross Kut Showband, Marge
Graham and acclaimed bush poet Ray Essery.
Fingers were crossed before the first muster last year when organiser Wendy Gordon decided
to open her property to the festival at Calliope – a tiny but historically-rich hamlet in the lush
Clarence Valley.
There was no need for anxiety. Country music fans – dominated by grey nomads and their
vans – turned up to savour the delights of food, friendship and the sweet sounds of
professional performers.
“The success of the first muster just blew me away,” Wendy said. “But the follow-up was even
more staggering. Given the response to bookings for this year’s muster, I wouldn’t be
surprised to see up to 1500 fans on the property.”
The Clarence Valley Music Muster is held at the same time of the year as Grafton’s nationallyrecognised Jacaranda Festival. And that’s no accident.
“Jaca pulls in thousands of visitors every year,” Wendy said. “The muster offers them another
attraction just a few kilometres down river. The property is close to Ulmarra – an historic river
port village settled even before Grafton itself.
“Ulmarra not only takes you back to a time when the Clarence River was the highway for
goods crammed into sailing ships and steamers, but it now offers accommodation at the
Commercial Hotel, the now-dry Exchange Hotel opposite and up-market bed and breakfast
outlets Woodfordleigh, Rooftops and Lulu’s.”
Proceeds from the rich raffles on offer go towards easing the lot of sick kids through the Camp
Quality organisation.

Cycle racing up and down Prince Street “hotdog laps” between the Ambulance Station and
turning under the viaduct in front of the Fire Station. Race grades are A, B, C, D and Juniors.
Races will have between three and six primes (one lap sprint for each prize). Grade rides from
20 to 35 minutes, and when the bell rings after the time allocation a three laps sprint for the
finish begins.

Watch as Grafton’s CBD becomes awash with a riot of colour and sound for the annual float

Country Music Afternoon (second Sunday in the month) Monthly hit of Country Music will
be held at the Grafton District Services Club, Fry Street, Grafton.
Starting at 2.00pm.

Australian Boardriders Battle will be held at Pippi each, Turners Beach, Main Beach, all
Angourie Beaches (not the point break).
Yamba will host the northern NSW state qualifying rounds of the Original Source Australian
Boardriders Battle, the Country’s biggest grassroots, boardriders event series with $120,000 in
prize money.
The series will involve more than 100 of Australia’s best boardriders clubs. Starting in October
2014 and culminating in a two-day, National final for 20 clubs on the Australia Day Long
weekend on 24-25 January, 2015 at Cronulla in Sydney.
The series is officially sanctioned by the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP), which
allows Australian ASP World championship Tour surfers (men and women) the opportunity to
represent their local boardriders club at respective State qualifying events and the National
Final. This means the very best Australian WCT athletes will line up again the local unknown
heroes of beaches from around the county.

Blacksmiths demonstration at the Lawrence Museum, Merton Street, Lawrence.
Once again the local Blacksmithing Group who gave a demonstration of their ancient craft
which was very popular last year will once again be repeated.
As was the case last year, a limited number of stall holders will be permitted to display their
wares to make the day a gala occasion. If you wish to hold a stall, please contact the museum

While at the museum, patrons should also avail themselves of the opportunity to look through
the museum. There is an impressive and interesting number of objects on display, surprising
most patrons in their quality and variety.

Grafton TAFE - TAFE Music Student Concert - North Coast TAFE Grafton Campus, 1

Starting at 12 noon.
In these concerts, TAFE music students perform both covers and original songs they have
written themselves. The concerts take place at TAFE, either on the veranda of the music
building or in the large rehearsal room next to the music building and start at 12 noon.
They last about one hour.

Weekend of Rowing - The Clarence River will come alive with boats, competitors and officials,
on December 6 and 7 this year, when once again the river’s two major rowing regattas will be
held at Memorial Park in Grafton.
The Head of the Clarence River Regatta is again expected to draw a large number of schools
to compete. In the past crews have come from New Zealand, Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney,
Gold Coast and of course the competitive Clarence Valley schools. The School Boys
Championship eights, the main event of the day, always attracts a lot of interest and
competition is as strong as some of the competitor’s upper torsos.
Sunday, December 7, the Grafton Rowing Club’s annual regatta will be held, with the majority
of teams staying over to compete, plus the addition of the North Coast’s many master
competitors. This regatta has in recent years attracted a record number of competitors.
An outstanding weekend of rowing, both for competitors and spectators.
