READINGS FOR THE TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JS #1012 First Reading -- The LORD said to Cyrus, his anointed, "I am the LORD, there is no other" (Isaiah 45:1, 4-6). Psalm -- Give the Lord glory and honor (Psalm 96). Second Reading -- Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy to the church of the Thessalonians: We thank God always for all of you (1 Thessalonians 1:1-5b). Gospel -- Give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's (Matthew 22:15-21). READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Eph 2:1-10; Ps 100:1b-5; Lk 12:13-21 Tuesday: Eph 2:12-22; Ps 85:9ab-14; Lk 12:35-38 Wednesday: Eph 3:2-12; Is 12:2-3, 4bcd-6; Lk 12:39-48 Thursday: Eph 3:14-21; Ps 33:1-2, 4-5, 11-12, 18-19; Lk 12:49-53 Friday: Eph 4:1-6; Ps 24:1-4ab, 5-6; Lk 12:54-59 Saturday: Eph 4:7-16; Ps 122:1-5; Lk 13:1-9 Sunday: Ex 22:20-26; Ps 18:2-4, 47, 51; 1 Thes 1:5c-10; Mt 22:34-40 EVERYTHING BELONGS TO GOD The first reading from the prophet Isaiah concerns the Persian King Cyrus, called the Lord's "anointed." Cyrus deserves this title because he ended the Babylonian captivity of the Jews. However, Isaiah reminds us that it was God who gave Cyrus his power. He may be a great king, but "I am the LORD and there is no other," says God (Isaiah 45:5). Today's Gospel is also concerned with worldly power. In the passage from Matthew, the Pharisees try to trick Jesus into speaking against the emperor. His famous answer is the perfect reply. Like the kings of old, Caesar can be given the respect due his position, but everything belongs to God. In the second reading, Paul gives thanks for all who are faithful to Jesus Christ and his gospel. He, too, reminds us that our call and the power to be faithful come from God. Copyright (c) J. S. An illustrated talk on a month long tour taken with her husband covering • Alaska’s National Parks • Adventures on the Dalton Highway • How to avoid flat tires on the Alcan Hwy Joan’s view: My husband is retired and we spend most of our days together, but most of the time we are off doing our own thing around the place. But when we travel, we find ourselves not only together but also engaged with each other in a new and deeper ways. As we share the beauty of the wilderness we are drawn closer in our mutual love for each other and of the land. OCTOBER 18-19, 2014 PARLE’S PEARLS In 1817, two Priests attempted to enter Korea with no success. The Holy See tried to send missionaries, but none could enter because of a new persecution in 1827, during which hundreds of Catholics were arrested and many killed. As of September 9, 1831, The Paris Foreign Mission Society was asked to be in charge of spreading the faith in Korea. The first Vicar Apostolic was Bishop Bruguiere. He was unsuccessful in gaining access and died in Mongolia in 1835. In 1836, his successor, Bishop Imbert was named Vicar and on December 31, 1837 succeeded in crossing the Yalu River, and by 1838 Korea had a Bishop, two Priests and more than 9000 lay Catholics. In 1839, a new persecution started , and on September 21, 1839 after severe tortures the three Missionaries were beheaded. More later… We are asked at this time of year to support a collection for the missions of the church. This is especially important for the work directly under the Pope's office of spreading the faith. It is this office that directly assists the poor Bishops who need to find ways of housing and educating men called to be Priests or lay Brothers, and women called to be Sisters. These funds have no other source but this collection. Thank you. Fr. Dick ELECTRONIC GIVING We now offer electronic giving! SWEET TOOTH FOR A CAUSE The Knights of Columbus will hold their Tootsie Roll Fund Raising Drive, at the Masses this weekend. Funds raised are granted to non-profit organizations that deal with the disabled. All funds raised, less product expense, goes to the disabled. 80% of the funds remain in our local community while the other 20% goes to Washington State Special Olympics and the Knights of Columbus Wheel Chair Mission for the State of Washington. Last year, Special Olympics Mason County received a $1,200 grant from Shelton’s first Tootsie Roll Drive and we are looking at additional organizations this year. We have a very generous community and I thank you. Sincerely, Kim Washburn TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 18-19, 2014
