STEWARDSHIP
THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
In today's Gospel, Jesus presents a key principle of
Christian stewardship: that anyone who aspires to
greatness must serve others.
STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE
The pledge cards in the pews helps you set a
personal goal and helps the parish know how to
allocate its resources. Please fill one out today, and
simply place it in the collection basket, or leave it at
the parish office, or drop it in the mail. Thank you!
SECOND COLLECTION TODAY
In an ongoing effort to reduce the principal owed
on the Christian Education Building and thus reduce
the interest payments, we will take a second collection today. Feel free to use the green envelopes in
the pews.
WORLD MISSION SUNDAY
Today is World Mission Sunday! We are invited
today to reach out and help build the Church in
Mongolia, the world’s youngest Catholic Church,
as well as local churches throughout the Missions,
in the most remote areas across our world. Your
prayers and generous gift to the Society for the
Propagation of the Faith in the collection today will
help the work of priests, religious and lay leaders in
Mongolia and throughout the Missions who offer
the poor practical help and the experience of God’s
love and mercy, His hope and peace. Please keep
the Missions in your daily prayers. Please be as
generous as you can to today’s collection. For more
information, please visit

FAITH FORMATION
WHAT’S YOUR CATHOLIC IQ?
In the story of the Wedding Feast at Cana (John 2:1-11), who of
the following does not have a speaking part? (a) Peter; (b) Jesus;
(c) the headwaiter; (d) Mary
Not too late to register!
Registration envelopes are available in Mary’s office. We are
asking for a donation of $25.00 per child or a $65.00 donation
for a family of three and over. This money will be used to offset the cost of books and materials. If this poses a hardship for
any family, please let me know. Please remember your responsibility as a Catholic parent and help your child know God
through the teachings of Jesus Christ. Our classes are here to
help you accomplish this baptismal promise.
P.S. If your child is planning on receiving the sacraments,
Reconciliation, Eucharist or Confirmation, they must attend
Christian Education for at least one year before reception of
these sacraments. Most importantly, he/she must be a regular participant in Mass.
FAMILY NIGHT
We are kicking off this year’s Family Night Celebration on
Saturday, November 8th at 6:00 PM. We will begin with Mass
at 5:00 and then enjoy a complementary chili dinner. EVERYONE is welcome to join us as we come together as a parish
community for fellowship and Liturgy. More details to come.
CHRISTMAS PAGEANT?
I know it sounds early, but this year we
need to begin organizing our Children’s
Christmas program that will be held
December 14th. If you are interested in
helping organize this annual event please
contact Mary’s office ASAP. We need
volunteers to make this a success!
Thought for the day: Family faces are magic mirrors.
Looking at people who belong to us, we see the past, present
and future. - Gail Lumet Buckley
ANSWER TO THE IQ QUESTION
(a) Although John’s Gospel mentions the disciples as being present, the account does not mention anything they said.
St. Edwards has successfully worked with other churches and
organizations in our community to provide meals for the hungry
during every day of the week. Our mission is to continue to
help in any way necessary. St. Edward will be serving meals on
Oct. 19th & 20th. If you are interested in helping provide a
dish or helping with the set-up or clean up, please sign up in the
church narthex or contact our coordinator, Mike Wallace at 4328204 or Mary Chapman for more information.
OUR NEED HAD INCREASED AND WE NEED HELP!
P.S. October 19th is chili night at Community Dinner. If
you would like to donate a pot of chili, please sign up.

TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
PRIMERA LECTURA
nada cerrado: "Por amor a Jacob, mi siervo, y a Israel, mi

EVERYTHING BELONGS TO GOD
The first reading from the prophet Isaiah concerns the Persian
King Cyrus, called the Lord's "anointed." Cyrus deserves this
title because he ended the Babylonian captivity of the Jews.
However, Isaiah reminds us that it was God who gave Cyrus his
power. He may be a great king, but "I am the LORD and there
is no other," says God (Isaiah 45:5).
Today's Gospel is also concerned with worldly power. In the
passage from Matthew, the Pharisees try to trick Jesus into
speaking against the emperor. His famous answer is the perfect
reply. Like the kings of old, Caesar can be given the respect due
his position, but everything belongs to God.
In the second reading, Paul gives thanks for all who are faithful
to Jesus Christ and his gospel. He, too, reminds us that our call
and the power to be faithful come from God.

A Conversation with:
Joan Villa, an avid outdoors woman will be presenting
Alaska: Wilderness, Glaciers and Bears-- Oh my, Oh my!
An illustrated talk on a month long tour taken with her husband covering
• Alaska’s National Parks
• Adventures on the Dalton Highway
• How to avoid flat tires on the Alcan Hwy
Joan’s view: My husband is retired and we spend most of our days together, but most of the time we are off doing our own thing
around the place. But when we travel, we find ourselves not only together but also engaged with each other in a new and deeper
ways. As we share the beauty of the wilderness we are drawn closer in our mutual love for each other and of the land. And in
turn, our appreciation for the life and love we have been given, moves us closer to God.

OCTOBER 18-19, 2014
PARLE’S PEARLS
In 1817, two Priests attempted to enter Korea
with no success. The Holy See tried to send
missionaries, but none could enter because
of a new persecution in 1827, during which
hundreds of Catholics were arrested and many
killed. As of September 9, 1831, The Paris
Foreign Mission Society was asked to be in
charge of spreading the faith in Korea. The first Vicar Apostolic
was Bishop Bruguiere. He was unsuccessful in gaining access
and died in Mongolia in 1835. In 1836, his successor, Bishop
Imbert was named Vicar and on December 31, 1837 succeeded
in crossing the Yalu River, and by 1838 Korea had a Bishop,
two Priests and more than 9000 lay Catholics. In 1839, a new
persecution started , and on September 21, 1839 after severe
tortures the three Missionaries were beheaded. More later…
We are asked at this time of year to support a collection for the
missions of the church. This is especially important for the
work directly under the Pope's office of spreading the faith. It
is this office that directly assists the poor Bishops who need to
find ways of housing and educating men called to be Priests or
lay Brothers, and women called to be Sisters. These funds have
no other source but this collection. Thank you. Fr. Dick
ELECTRONIC GIVING
We now offer electronic giving! Please visit our church website

SWEET TOOTH FOR A CAUSE
The Knights of Columbus will hold their Tootsie Roll Fund
Raising Drive, at the Masses this weekend. Funds raised are
granted to non-profit organizations that deal with the disabled.
All funds raised, less product expense, goes to the disabled.
80% of the funds remain in our local community while the
other 20% goes to Washington State Special Olympics and the
Knights of Columbus Wheel Chair Mission for the State of
Washington. Last year, Special Olympics Mason County
received a $1,200 grant from Shelton’s first Tootsie Roll Drive
and we are looking at additional organizations this year. We
have a very generous community and I thank you.
Sincerely, Kim Washburn
