PARISH SURVEY
As a carry-through of the “Good Leaders, Good Shepherds”
training that I went through with 30 other priests, there will be a
series of parish surveys conducted over the next several years in
the parish. Here is what we should do to prepare for that
survey:
If you have changed your e-mail address, send an e-mail from
your corrected address to Susan at <[email protected]> an
note the change.
1. If you do not have access to e-mail or a computer, we will
mail you a survey. Again leave your name at the office.
2. Give some thought and prayer to your participation in the
parish, considering both the strengths and weaknesses you have
experienced. Your reply will be considered your truthful views.
With the data from the survey it is my hope to develop a
Pastoral Plan from which we can build a strong faith-filled
evangelizing church. If this is something you are convinced is
a good move, please offer your services by giving me your
name on a slip of paper (I don’t trust my memory for things told
me on a Sunday morning!)
I am hoping that I can count on your cooperation, and I will
keep you in the loop as more detailed information is available
to me.

Our first Family Night dinner is
Saturday, December 6th at 6:00.
We will begin with Mass at 5:00
and then enjoy a complementary
chili dinner. Then we will be
making family rosaries and
conclude the evening praying a
rosary in honor of Our Lady of
Guadalupe and Our Lady of Immaculate Conception.
EVERYONE is welcome to join us as we come together as a
parish community for fellowship and Liturgy.
We have begun our holiday food drive! If
you and your family are in a position to
donate nonperishable food items, boxes
will be available in the church narthex and
the Education Building. Needed items
include: Top Ramen, instant oatmeal,
meals in a can: chili, ravioli, pork &
beans, fruit cups, energy bars, microwaveable mac & cheese, fruit juice, tuna, etc.
Any donation will be greatly appreciated and what a wonderful
way to teach your child the true spirit of giving that will follow
them for a lifetime. Our neighbors need us!
The Youth Group will be a sponsoring
a pie sale on Nov. 22nd & 23rd after
all Masses. This is their first fund
raising opportunity and all support
would be greatly appreciated. If you
are interested in donating a pie, please
contact the Education office.
Thought for the day: Heavenly Father, my prayer is that I
would learn to trust You more. It’s such a comfort to know that
my life is in Your hands, and circumstances surrounding me are
in Your control. Remind me daily that choosing to be happy is
an option. May I find my strength in Your joy. Amen.

OUR NUMBERS ARE GROWING
We need volunteers to help provide for our increasing community’s hungry! We are facing an average of 70 to 100 meals a
night and these include an increase of families. St. Edwards
will be serving meals on November 16th, 17th, 29th & 30th.
If you are interested in helping provide a dish or helping with
the set-up or clean up, please sign up in the church narthex
or contact our coordinator, Mike Wallace at 432-8204 or Mary
Chapman for more information.

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos esta parábola:
"El Reino de los cielos se parece también a un hombre que iba
a salir de viaje a tierras lejanas; llamó a sus servidores de
confianza y les encargó sus bienes. A uno le dio cinco talentos;
a otro, dos; y a un tercero, uno, según la capacidad de cada uno,
y luego se fue.
Son engañosos los encantos y vana la hermosura; merece
alabanza la mujer que teme al Señor.
El que recibió cinco talentos fue enseguida a negociar con ellos
y ganó otros cinco. El que recibió dos hizo lo mismo y ganó

Hermanos: Por lo que se refiere al tiempo y a las circunstancias
de la venida del Señor, no necesitan que les escribamos nada,
puesto que ustedes saben perfectamente que el día del Señor
llegará como un ladrón en la noche. Cuando la gente esté
diciendo: "¡Qué paz y qué seguridad tenemos!", de repente
vendrá sobre ellos la catástrofe, como de repente le vienen a la
mujer encinta los dolores del parto, y no podrán escapar.
Pero a ustedes, hermanos, ese día no los tomará por sorpresa,
como un ladrón, porque ustedes no viven en tinieblas, sino que
son hijos de la luz y del día, no de la noche y las tinieblas.
Por tanto, no vivamos dormidos, como los malos; antes bien,
mantengámonos despiertos y vivamos sobriamente.

tomar parte en la alegría de tu señor'.
Se acercó luego el que había recibido dos talentos y le dijo:
'Señor, dos talentos me dejaste; aquí tienes otros dos, que con
ellos he ganado'. Su señor le dijo: 'Te felicito, siervo bueno y
fiel. Puesto que has sido fiel en cosas de poco valor, te confiaré

El señor le respondió: 'Siervo malo y perezoso. Sabías que
cosecho lo que no he plantado y recojo lo que no he sembrado.
¿Por qué, entonces, no pusiste mi dinero en el banco para que, a
mi regreso, lo recibiera yo con intereses? Quítenle el talento y
dénselo al que tiene diez. Pues al que tiene se le dará y le
sobrará; pero al que tiene poco, se le quitará aun ese poco que
tiene.
Y a este hombre inútil, échenlo fuera, a las tinieblas. Allí será el
llanto y la desesperación'".

THANKSGIVING DAY EXCHANGE
How fitting if you could attend Mass (9:00 a.m.)! For the bold
& venturesome among you, we invite you to bring bread that
you would ordinarily have on your Thanksgiving table such as
rolls, biscuits, a loaf of bread, buns, etc. Place them in front of
the altar for a blessing and then swap with someone else’s to
show the unity of Christians on this day.

GET READY
The Letters of Paul to the Thessalonians are among his earliest
writings, and are driven by his belief and the belief of the
entire early Christian community that the return of Christ was
imminent. Therefore, to devote time or attention to anything
else was foolish.
As time progressed, this fervor receded a bit. Today we may
wonder, when we hear these readings about the coming endtimes, if we should take them to heart. What should we do when
we hear that the day of the Lord will come upon us "like a thief
at night"? (1 Thessalonians 5:2) Does this mean we are to stop
our long-range goal-setting, get rid of our yearly calendars and
planners, or stop putting money in the college education fund?
Of course not. What it does mean is that we need to change our
lives, living like children of the light and illuminating the world
around us with the light of the gospel. Then, on that day, when
the details of our daily living become unimportant, we will be
ready to find our peace and security in Christ Jesus.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
All Christians in both East and West embraced the care of the
sick as essential to church life. In the West, the importance of
the visit of the priest is stressed, while in the East, the sick
person is brought to the church for a full Liturgy of the Word.
Some, such as the Armenians, even call it the "Ritual of the
Lamp," since the oil is poured out of the lamp by which the
Word is read. This may be why Eastern Christians sometimes
anoint the sick with this oil, since the trip to church might kill
them.
Our tradition in the West also unfolded in monasteries, where
it was possible for infirm monks to be attended with a full and
beautifully consoling liturgy. In 950 the monks of St. Alban's
Abbey in Mainz produced a ceremonial book that was instantly
a pastoral hit everywhere. There were two lengthy rituals for
the sick, one an extended vigil, and the other a liturgy of
anointing that included Communion under both species. While
this ritual was a house formula for monks, it is easy to see how
monks who had the care of parishes desired to serve their
parishioners in a similar way. The first form included the
chanting of penitential psalms, and the second form required a
confession beforehand. Both forms included a laying on of
hands, which everyone understood as being an essential part of
penance.

ROSARY GUILD
The Rosary Guild will meet Wednesday, November 19th
at 5PM in the Christian Education Building. The rosaries
made are distributed to various locations including Care Net

SONGS OF CHRISTMAS BRING
DOUBLE DELIGHTS
The holiday season is shortly
upon us, and once again we
tune our ears to this brief time
when choral voices fill the air
with glorious music that lifts
the human spirit. This year,
the residents of Mason County
and the Olympia area can look
forward to a special double
treat. The renowned Harstine
Island Community Choir teams
up with Masterworks Choral Ensemble of Olympia to present
two dynamic concerts featuring the most loved carols sung
throughout the ages. Familiar carols like “The First Noel”, “Joy
to the World", “Carol of the Bells” and “Ding! Dong! Merrily
on High” contain new twists with refreshing arrangements sung
for the enjoyment of families and friends. The choir not only
doubles, but also the accompaniment, as two pianists support
the voices with vibrant four hand playing.
Women of Note, the newly formed regional vocal ensemble,
is the featured guest artist, presenting several beautiful carols
arranged for women's voices only, creating a different resonance and atmosphere for listeners who have not experienced
carols for women choirs.
The Harstine Island Community Choir is a non-profit whose
mission is to provide ready access to quality music for residents
of Mason County and nearby areas. You will want to mark one
of the dates on your calendar and join your friends and
neighbors in joyous celebration.

Traveling Light: Holding On and Letting Go
November 22 Saturday 9:00AM-3:00PM
We’ll look to poems, short fiction, and memoir pieces for
models to inspire our work together. Writing exercises will help
participants probe their thinking and express their needs, desires
and intentions regarding what they want to hold onto and let go
of to keep themselves centered in our ever changing world.

Janice Lawry is a developmental psychologist whose workshops use writing and other means of creative expression as
tools for personal exploration and transformation. Her work
brings to light the parallels in our psychological, creative, and
spiritual growth.
Advent Retreat: Giving Birth to the God of Peace
December 5-7 Friday 7:15PM-Sunday 1:00PM
A silent beginning to Advent may deepen your journey to
Christmas. The opening session will involve prayer, relaxation
and preparation for the retreat with some materials for possible
use during the retreat. The retreat will close with group prayer
and sharing. A spiritual director will be available for those who
wish to listen with you as you discern the movement of God in
your life.

Therese Gonneville , OSB, is involved in the ministry of giving
retreats, spiritual direction and phone ministry at St. Placid
Priory. “I journey with others with a listening heart, especially
as they struggle with the pain of loss and grief, healing of past

into greater inner freedom RECONCILED to God, other and
themselves.”
