Oct. 20th: Feast of St. Paul of the Cross
“The world lives unmindful of the sufferings of Jesus
which are the miracle of miracles of the love of God. We
must arouse the world from its slumber."
~ St. Paul of the Cross
Paul Francis Daneo, founder of the
Congregation of the Passion, is considered to
be a visionary and mystic in his time. But like
us, he was also a seeker, a questioning heart, a
man on a lifelong journey of faith that took him
inward to the deepest part of his soul and outward as a preacher
to the harshest of lands. His journey began and ended at the
very same place – at the foot of the Cross, at the place of his
beloved Crucified Jesus through whom, for Paul, all love was
given, all suffering was transformed, all death was overcome,
and all questions would one day be answered.
Immaculée Ilibagiza (born 1972) is a Rwandan author and motivational speaker. She is
also a Roman Catholic. Her first book, Left to Tell: Discovering God Amidst the Rwandan
Holocaust (2006), is an autobiographical work detailing how she survived during the
Rwandan Genocide. Left to Tell recounts how she survived hidden for 91 days with seven
other women in a small bathroom, no larger than 3’ x 4’. During the genocide, most of
Ilibagiza’s family was killed: her mother, her father, and her two brothers Damascene
and Vianney. Besides herself, the only other survivor in her family was her brother
Aimable, who was studying out of the country ignorant that the war was going on. In
Left to Tell, Ilibagiza shares how her Catholic faith guided her through her terrible
ordeal, and describes her eventual forgiveness of her family's killers. Ilibagiza speaks
all over the world. Please come and hear her speak at UVM on Tuesday Nov. 11 th

Oct. 22nd: Feast of Pope St. John Paul II
Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, then dean of
the College of Cardinals and later Pope
Benedict XVI, presided at the funeral
Mass for John Paul II and concluded his
homily by saying: “None of us can ever
forget how, in that last Easter Sunday of
his life, the Holy Father, marked by suffering, came once more to the
window of the Apostolic Palace and one last time gave his blessing urbi et
orbi [‘to the city and to the world’].
“We can be sure that our beloved pope is standing today at the window of
the Father’s house, that sees us and blesses us. Yes, bless us, Holy Father.
We entrust your dear soul to the Mother of God, your Mother, who guided
you each day and who will guide you now to the glory of her Son, our
Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.”
In his 1999 Letter to the Elderly, Pope John Paul II wrote: “Grant, O Lord
of life,...when the moment of our definitive ‘passage’ comes, that we may
face it with serenity, without regret for what we shall leave behind. For in
meeting you, after having sought you for so long, we shall find once more
every authentic good which we have known here on earth, in the company
of all those who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith and
hope....Amen.”
