As part of its celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Portsmouth Naval Medical Center invited Regina Fremont-Gomez to serve as the guest speaker on October 8th. Mrs. FremontGomez spoke about the history of Hispanics in the United States and the mix of cultures in the United States, Mexico, Centtral America, the Caribbean, and South America. The Panamanian Folkloric Dance Group performed several dances to delight the audience. In addition, two sailors also demonstrated salsa and bachata, two popular Latin dances. Rowe, who has now received international acclaim as a motivational speaker and author and started her own nonproﬁt organization, has done just that. In 2010, after ﬁnishing her book tour for Aim High, Rowe was looking for a place to donate a pair of her gently used running shoes. It was this act of kindness that inspired her to found The Got Sole Project, an organization that collects and distributes new and gently used shoes to those in need. She recalled how a new pair of shoes made her feel when she was growing up in poverty as a child. The Got Sole Project started as a local initiative and supported migrant working families on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, children’s shelters in Norfolk and more. It soon expanded to meet needs around the world in the aftermath of the typhoon in the Philippines in 2013 and Hurricane Sandy in 2012. For Rowe, The Got Sole Project is just one more way to offer faith, hope and love, this time, through shoes. “I believe that many people have slipped into accepting ‘good enough’ when it comes to work, school and even play,” Rowe said. “I refuse to settle for mediocrity; instead I look at every day as a new beginning to reach for the top, do my best and inspire those around me to do the same.” Rowe will be the motivational speaker at an upcoming event in Hampton Roads, the Girl Scout Famous Formers Luncheon, which will take place on October 30 at the Norfolk Yacht Club. At this luncheon, GSCCC will be honoring six local Girl Scout alumnae who continue to exemplify the values of Girl Scouting through their professional and volunteer roles in the community. Everyone is invited to attend and hear Rowe speak. Tickets are $40 each and can be purchased online at www.gsccc.org.
