For Your Information Small Renovation Project to Begin This Fall The building plans for this new facility included an exterior activity area entered Director Alice Lepore thanks from the children’s room, continuing a Sayville Library tradition of conducting story Senator Phil Boyle for a times and other programs outdoors (include 1949 photo). When the dust settled $50,000 grant opportunity. from the construction, there was a designated emergency exit that was not part of the original plans and a grassy sloped area that was difficult to navigate. The Board of Trustees has discussed options over the last few years and was motivated to improve this situation when two grant opportunities arose that will lower the cost to the Library. Senator Phil Boyle has made it possible for Sayville Library to apply for a $50,000 Capital Project Grant. A NYS Library Construction Grant which could provide up to 50% reimbursement for construction costs has also been made available this year. Neither of these monetary opportunities is guaranteed, but the Board is hopeful that this funding will come through, thereby reducing the construction costs to the Library by 87%. The Library’s existing Capital Fund will cover the remaining balance. The total for construction and professional design services is $142,850, less the potential $116,500 in grants. No new taxes will need to be raised to complete this project. Additionally, a Naming Opportunity is possible for this outdoor garden space by making a significant donation to honor or memorialize an individual, family, friend, organization or company. Call the Library Director for details. The renovated space will include a terraced semicircle Story time in 1949. that will provide two levels of seating along with a stairway for safe exiting of the area. The base of the semicircle will have a poured rubber surface providing a larger activity area than currently exists. The top of the terrace will have a planter. The westerly location of the courtyard makes it very sunny in the afternoons. A pergola will be installed that will eventually be covered with a vine-like plant to block the sun, along with a large tree on the outside of the space serving the same purpose. A properly configured outdoor space would allow for enhanced programming following the guidelines of the Nature Explore organization’s “classrooms”, which will help children develop a sense of wonder and appreciation for the natural world around them. Classes may improve skills in math, visual-spatial concepts, art, science, close observation and social-emotional development. The Board of Trustees is excited to offer this new programming space to the community. Renovation will begin November 2014 and be completed in late spring 2015 when warmer weather allows for the pouring of the rubber surface. Please call me if you have any questions Alice Lepore, Director 2 November/December 2014 ** A current Sayville Library card is required to register for any Teen program November ________ Robotics Club Friday, November 7, 7:00-8:00 pm Ages 10 & Up Work on a Lego Mindstormers Robot and much more! Our condolences to Mrs. Limouze and her family at Harold’s passing in August. PARKING SITUATION As you may be aware, a construction project at the school building next to the Library has eliminated some parking spaces. With the visitors and staff of the three buildings using this lot, it may be difficult to find a space. The Library’s own renovation project to begin in November will add more cars and equipment. One option is to visit the library after 3:00 pm weekdays and anytime on weekends when the parking lots in front and behind the library have many available spaces. Other options are to park in the streets around the area. Parking in the lot of the church next door to the Library should be avoided. This situation will exist until early spring. You may arrange to pick up your items from our 24/7 mailbox by calling the Circulation Desk. We hope you will continue to visit the Library and work with us during this parking challenge.
