“Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what
belongs to God.”— Matthew 22:21
Everything belongs to God
The first reading from the prophet Isaiah concerns the Persian King Cyrus, called the
Lord’s “anointed.” Cyrus deserves this title because he ended the Babylonian captivity of
the Jews. However, Isaiah reminds us that it was God who gave Cyrus his power. He
may be a great king, but “I am the Lord and there is no other,” says God (Isaiah 45:5).
Today’s Gospel is also concerned with worldly power. In the
passage from Matthew, the Pharisees try to trick Jesus into
speaking against the emperor. His famous answer is the perfect
reply. Like the kings of old, Caesar can be given the respect due
his position, but everything belongs to God.
In the second reading, Paul gives thanks for all who are faithful to
Jesus Christ and his gospel. He, too, reminds us that our call and
the power to be faithful come from God.
What is on our front cover?
The I.C. Ladies Auxiliary Business Meeting!
Who are our Ladies Auxiliary?
I.C. Ladies Auxiliary is a group of very talented and active women from our parish. The
group includes mothers, working women, singles, retirees, etc. of all ages. Members are
assigned to a circle and each circle fulfills a different ministry each month. The Ladies
Auxiliary cares for and purchases items for the church to assist in making our parish the
most beautiful in the area. Words fail to express our gratitude for all they do to support
our parish.
Have you ever wondered what the ladies do every Wednesday at St. Anne’s? Well,
mark your calendar and don’t miss the 45th annual bazaar where all their hard work will
be on display. This is a great time to shop for the holidays! They will have quilts, table

goods, featherbed and cinnamon rolls, pies, cookies, jellies, candies and herbs. They will
again be offering frozen casseroles for 2 or 4 servings. Bid on items in the silent auction.
Don’t forget to turn in your raffle tickets to win
a lovely item made by the ladies.

Reflecting on God’s Word
In a country that has a strong commitment to separation of church
and state, it is noteworthy that our money, both bills and coins, is
inscribed with the words “In God We Trust.” The history of this motto
and its relation to our currency goes back to the Civil War. Changing
it has never gotten much support. It serves as a helpful reminder
about where our true security lies.
In the Gospel, the Pharisees, along with some supporters of the
Roman regime called Herodians, get into the act of trying to trap
Jesus into taking a stand that would get him in trouble with either the
Roman authorities or his own people. But Jesus, as much the fox as
Herod was reputed to be, slips out of their net by noting that there
can be different loyalties without a loss of priorities.
Jesus calls on them to produce the idolatrous coin that no devout
Jew should carry, since it declared Caesar to be a god. Then he
advises them to return to the emperor the coin that bears his image
but to return to God what bears God’s image, that is, themselves,
made in the image of God.
A new order is revealed when we give God’s image
back to God by our words and deeds, showing
God’s image to others. When this happens, the
motto “In God We Trust” becomes not merely
stamped on paper or branded on copper, but
encountered in living flesh and blood.
Holy Souls Commemoration
It will take place on Sunday, November 2nd at 2:00 pm in Calvary
Cemetery and 3:30 pm at Holy Cross Cemetery. This action is and has
been throughout the history of our Church, one of the greatest signs of our
belief in the power of prayers for our relatives and friends who passed on
before us. Please note: We request that you do not park in Calvary
Cemetery when you come for All Souls Commemoration. If
you have an elderly or infirm person to bring, we ask that
you drive the person into the cemetery and then park the
car outside of the cemetery. There will be a second
collection for Calvary Cemetery on the weekend of
November 1st and 2nd for the upkeep of the Cemetery.
Altar of the Dead
The Hispanic Ministry is asking all the parishioners to bring a picture of a
loved one to be put on the Altar of the Dead for the All Souls celebration.
Please write your contact information on the back of the picture so we can
return it when we take down the altar. You can bring
your pictures to the Church Office or leave them at the
Sacristy. The altar will be at the church from
October 30th to November 24th. For more
information, contact Ana Garcia at the Church Office.

descansa nuestra verdadera seguridad.
