Newsletter 31 24th October 2014 Term 4, Week 2 Kia ora whanau Week 2 of the last term of 2014 our senior students are in full examination preparation mode. When I walk around the school, it is rewarding to see our students working diligently, completing tasks, engaging with their teachers to ensure they are successful. Students I have spoken to have their study plans, revision notes and time tables prepared and they are working hard to achieve their goals. There is a positive learning feeling in the school. Next week is a short week with Labour Day on Monday. We will celebrate the Trades Academy Prize Giving on Friday 31 October and then we move into our Senior Prize Giving on Wednesday 5 November. This is always a wonderful event and I encourage you to attend to celebrate the successes of 2014 in grand style. Building Your House of Learning! There is a story of a wealthy man who called his servant in to say that he was leaving the country for a year and that, while he was gone, he wanted the servant to build him a new house. The wealthy man told his servant to build the house well and, when he returned, he would pay all the bills, whatever it cost. Shortly after the wealthy man departed, the servant decided it was foolish to work so hard and started to cut corners, spending and squandering all the money saved. When the wealthy man returned he paid all the bills and then asked the servant, “Are you satisfied with the house you have built?” “Yes, I am”, replied the servant. The wealthy man said, “Good … because the house is yours. You can live in it the rest of your life”. Education is the house you are building to live in for the rest of your life. Build the best house you can. TRIDENT HIGH SCHOOL INVITATION - WELCOME NAU MAI - HAERE MAI Parents, whanau and friends of the school are invited to the TRADES ACADEMY PRIZE GIVING Friday 31 October - 12.30pm Whakatane Baptist Church, Keepa Rd TRIDENT HIGH SCHOOL INVITATION - WELCOME NAU MAI - HAERE MAI Parents, whanau and friends of the school are invited to the 2014 SENIOR PRIZE GIVING Wednesday 5th November - 10:00am Trident High School Auditorium TRIDENT LEADS | NEWSLETTER 31 | 24TH OCTOBER 2014 | TERM 4, WEEK 2 Whakatane has been protecting Kiwi and other indigenous wildlife in our area for over 14 years. We have released over 200 Kiwi and estimate more than 300 live within the Kiwi Project area (Ohope, Mokorua, and Kohi Point Scenic Reserves). The success of ‘Kiwi Whakatane’ has seen over 600 children undertake the Kiwi Tracker walk and use the Education Whare since February 2014. The translocation of 40 North Island Robins to Ohope Scenic Reserve is part of the Kiwi Trust’s vision to restore and enhance biodiversity. Robins need consistently low numbers of rodents to survive and a translocation of this kind would not have been considered prior to the Whakatane Kiwi Project. Kiwi, Robins and other wildlife are already venturing into the town environment. What are we doing in our backyards to ensure their protection? We don’t want a fence, but we need to extend our protection zone. Mr Rowland’s L1 Wood Technology class are doing something to help. As part of the curriculum they have been able to gain credits manufacturing 28 predator traps for the Halo Project. Once the success of the Robin translocation has been assessed, the Trust would like to consider introducing Tieke (saddleback) to Ohope Scenic Reserve. Tieke are highly valued by the descendants of the Matatua waka as it was accompanied to Whakatane by two Tieke centuries ago after it was lost in fog off the coast of Cuvier Island. To see their return to Whakatane and be heard from the heads, would be of great significance from that historic journey. Introducing Teike is a significant vision that could transform our urban areas and our households. It’s one that needs buyin from everyone in the community. Hence the importance of community led Whakatane Halo. (photo front page) Six members of the Trident High Big Band were selected as members of the 2014 National Secondary Schools Band. On Tuesday 21st October Malcolm McCracken & Michael Bell (APEX Energy Council – Hot Water Cylinders & Gas SubGroup) implemented their next two Energy Efficiency actions: 1. insulated the HOT WATER CYLINDER that supplies hotwater to the staffroom area. 2. installed TIMERS on the two INSTANT HOT WATER “Zips” in staffroom. The 180 Litre HOT WATER CYLINDER was warm to touch and losing approx. 27 °C per day through heat loss radiating from its sides (costing $202 per year to replace heat loss alone). To insulate cost $75 so if it reduces heat loss by 1/3rd it will pay for itself in one year. The next steps with this HOT WATER CYLINDER is to: Re-measure the rate of heat loss in order to consider the cost payback & viability of insulating all other 30 cylinders on site. Turn the thermostat temperature down from 66 to 55 deg C (it is scalding hot at the moment). Reduce the hot water taps flowrates to reduce wastage. The TIMERS turn off the “Zips” between 6pm-6am, between 8:25-8:50am (to stop them noisily boiling during the morning staff meeting) & all weekend. These timers cost $8 and will save a calculated $8 per year in avoided heat loss – a 1 year payback. These implemented actions are building towards Sustainability Credits & perhaps Malcolm & Michael’s future careers. Thanks to Neil Dudley & Mike Te Pou (Shavaughn Te Pou's Dad) from the Company “Greenworks” for providing training on how to insulate cylinders and Paul Camburn (our Maintenance Manager) for helping to make this happen.
