With patience, understanding and energy you have provided our students with the opportunity to enter a new level of learning that demands responsibility, determination and a desire to be successful. Specifically to the form teachers, Deans, HODs and TICs, Subject teachers, the office staff, the ground staff, the Senior Managers and Deputy Principals. Thank you for believing in our school, in our students and in the values of our school. For the time and energy that you have devoted to creating an environment that encourages success, and recognises that each student has the potential to be something special. You are all a part of the exciting world of learning and growing which is Trident. We suggest that parents sit down with their teenager and fill in five study times for each of the four core subjects; English, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. Be specific about the topic you will study, for example in Mathematics you could write “Complete Algebra worksheets”. Make a realistic plan and stick to it. Class teachers will provide students with suitable exam preparation activities. This timetable helps you plan when to complete these activities. Creating an exam study timetable with your child allows families to know how much study their teenager should be completing. On exam days school starts at 8:40, students go to the exam venue for roll check and notices. Exams start at 8:50am. Periods 3, 4 & 5 follow as normal. A study timetable, has been emailed and is on mywaka.trident.school.nz. Reminder to all Year 9 and 10 students to bring a calculator to Junior Maths Exams. School will finish at 1pm on Thursday 20th November for a Paid Union Meeting. It is essential that students come to school on this day as they have exams in the morning. Bus students and students whose parents want them to remain on the school grounds will be supervised by non union staff. CAREERS CORNER 2015—Students requiring help with their plans for 2015 can still come and see Ms Wildash for assistance. Please ring or email first to confirm availability. Trades Academy 2015—Trades Academy is a great opportunity for year 12 and 13 students to begin their journey towards trades qualifications and a future career. Applications are still being sought for 2015 in the following areas: Electronics Engineering Construction Automotive Hospitality Healthcare Hair and Beauty Agriculture Business Administration If you are interested please contact Ms Wildash to talk it over and have an interview. Waiariki Summer School—Waiariki Institute of Technology is offering a range of summer school programmes at both Whakatane and Mokoia (Rotorua) campuses. Some of these programmes are free or have a small charge, many of them carry NZQA credits. Free transport may be available from Whakatane to Rotorua. See Ms Wildash or www.waiariki.ac.nz for more information. Funding Tertiary Study—If you are thinking about tertiary study next year it is important to consider the financial implications. We encourage all students to apply for financial scholarships. Generally speaking students need to find the scholarships themselves and then we will support them in putting an application together. QUALITY WORK — RESPECT FOR OTHERS — COURAGE - KIA MANAWA NUI Congratulations to Trident High School’s Service Academy who has won a major accolade in its first year of operation. Students have returned from a five day adventure challenge in Turangi recently having gained the title ‘Lower North Island Service Academy of the Year’. The title awarded by the defence force youth development staff, acknowledged the way Trident students presented and conducted themselves, and how they worked with other academies, defence force staff and each other in challenges throughout the year. The service academy programme combines core school subjects with a military-based programme, training camps and community service. All Service Academy students also gained NCEA Level 2 this year and are planning to return to the main school or go into employment next year. The Academy is looking forward to another successful year and is already recruiting students for 2015. Congratulations to the following students who were successful in gaining Scholarships for 2015. Amber has been training two nights a week plus played club night each week leading up to the tournament. She had a fantastic result winning the F/J Women’s Grade! Congratulations Amber. East Bay Underwater Hockey Club in conjunction with the Trident High School Underwater Hockey teams invite any students interested in trying Underwater Hockey to our ‘Have A Go’ sessions, on Monday’s 5.30 – 7.00 pm (17th & 24th November). Many thanks to all parents and caregivers for supporting students in registering early and paying Camp Fees promptly. Please ensure your child has the correct gear for their camp. Consent/Medical forms must be completed by parents/ caregivers and returned to the Teacher-in-charge of the student’s camp. Camp Fees must be paid in full prior to departure. All Year 10 students who are not going away on camp are enrolled in the School Based Activites. They will take part in the programme which has been organised by staff. Students will benefit from a range of practical and cultural activities. The week will be busy but fun. For Year 9 Students there is a special thematic based programme where classes in Science, Social Studies, Maths and English come together in a cross-curricular broad study aimed at solving through co-operative work, a complex problem. It is important that the students bring paper, pens and PE gear everyday. They also need to be in correct uniform. All Students are expected to be at school for the full week and if your child is going to be away it is important that you inform the office as soon as possible. In February 2015 Trident High School will again welcome a group of 20 students from Hijirigaoka Junior High School, Tama City, Tokyo, Japan. They will be staying for 12 nights from Thursday 26th February until Tuesday 10th March. Over the years this group has been visiting Trident High School, many students from both Trident and Hijirigaoka have benefited from the shared experiences and lasting relationships resulting from the visits. Hosting these students is an opportunity to bring Japanese language and culture into your home and to share our unique Kiwi lifestyle and culture with our Japanese friends. An accommodation allowance of $30 per night will be provided to host families.
