Extract from the Principal’s Prize Giving speech:
I would like to pay special tribute to four groups today:
The staff of Trident for their support, commitment and ingenuity in
creating courses that are appropriate, challenging, engaging and
opening pathways to our students. With patience, understanding
and energy you have provided our students with the opportunity
to enter a new level of learning that demands responsibility,
determination and a desire to be successful. Specifically to the
form teachers, Deans, HODs and TICs, Subject teachers, the office
staff, the ground staff, the Senior Managers and Deputy
Principals. Thank you for believing in our school, in our students
and in the values of our school. For the time and energy that you
have devoted to creating an environment that encourages success,
and recognises that each student has the potential to be something special. You are all a part of the exciting world of learning
and growing which is Trident. To recognise specifically those who
are leaving: Deputy Principal, Andrea Panther; HOD Special
Education, Kenny McCracken, Samantha Chapman, Kaushal
Goundar, Stephen Bryant, Matetu Herewini, Renene Jelly our
School Nurse of 6 years and Delwyn Russell, 28 years of
outstanding teaching and service to the school.

son or daughter. You have had the courage to support them as
they have engaged in all we have to offer, and you have entrusted
your young people to the school, and been part of their success,
taking the opportunities and sharing in the learning. Thank you for
this trust it is something we value and will build on.
To the community of Whakatane – our supporters, sponsors, local
businesses, our local schools and the community of learning that
exists in Whakatane. Thank you for your contribution to the
success of Trident. We are proud to be part of the town and to
carry the name of Whakatane across New Zealand and across the
world.
Finally the students who are the heart and soul of the school.
Congratulations on a great year of the highest quality in your
learning, your sporting activities, your cultural productions, your
participation in the many activities that school has offered it is a
tribute to your commitment to your learning and your commitment to the core values of the Trident. You have lived our values

actions. Congratulations on extending your education, your
learning, on engaging with the opportunities, and continuing to
raise the success bar for our school. Especially to the Year 13
cohort – thank you.
We at Trident have the highest expectations of ourselves, setting
the highest standards for all our community members. We work
together to create these common goals. Today we celebrate that

all that we do. Today we recognise the special achievements and
the highlights of our community in 2014 so, whether you are a
prize-winner or not, you are part of our winning team –
Trident High School.
Let this whakatoki be part of your learning philosophy
Mā te rongo, ka mōhio; Mā te mōhio, ka mārama; Mā te mārama,
ka mātau; Mā te mātau, ka ora.
Through resonance (the echo of learning) comes cognisance
(awareness); through cognisance comes understanding; through
understanding comes knowledge; through knowledge comes life
and well-being.
Use this whakatoki as a guide …
Whāia te mātauranga hei oranga mō koutou. Seek after learning
for the sake of your wellbeing.

Every Year 9 and Year 10 student has been issued with a 10
day Study Timetable to help them prepare for their exams on
17, 18, 19 & 20 November. We suggest that parents sit down
with their teenager and fill in five study times for each of the
four core subjects; English, Mathematics, Science and Social
Studies. Be specific about the topic you will study, for
example in Mathematics you could write “Complete Algebra
worksheets”. Make a realistic plan and stick to it. Class
teachers will provide students with suitable exam
preparation activities. This timetable helps you plan when to
complete these activities. Creating an exam study timetable
with your child allows families to know how much study their
teenager should be completing. On exam days school starts
at 8:40, students go to the exam venue for roll check and
notices. Exams start at 8:50am. Periods 3, 4 & 5 follow as
normal. A study timetable, has been emailed and is on
mywaka.trident.school.nz.
Reminder to all Year 9 and 10 students to bring a
calculator to Junior Maths Exams.
School will finish at 1pm on Thursday 20th November for a
Paid Union Meeting. It is essential that students come to
school on this day as they have exams in the morning.
Bus students and students whose parents want them to
remain on the school grounds will be supervised by non
union staff.
