Kia ora whanau
Today the Trident staff spent the morning developing
plans for the next 5 years. In very fruitful and vigorous
discussions, energising group work and some hard
questions about the strengths, weaknesses, threats and
opportunities that are part of our school and our
community, we worked towards establishing some initial
goals that will be explored further by the BOT and members
of the community.
Our objective is to develop 3 key school goals that will
become part of the day-to-day life of the school and that
will be reviewed and developed as we progress towards a
good outcome.
This initial discussion produced three key areas of
development:
1. The development of school and community
relationships, working towards including parents, staff
and students in a common goal of providing the best
education for our young people that reflects the values
and cultures of our school community.
2. Developing clear communication systems.
3. Developing a cross-curricular learning environment, by
developing an inclusive approach to all of our subjects
and learning opportunities and thereby opening doors
for greater discussion and the sharing of new teaching
and learning experiences.
The next step will be to engage with our parents and
community and our students so that these goals become
representative of our community’s wishes and educational
plans.
The staff also looked at the Mission statement of the school
and began a discussion on the way in which it reflects our
school now. It is worth considering it and you are invited to
a comment on it. Please let me know.

Every Year 9 and Year 10 student has been issued with a 10
day Study Timetable to help them prepare for their exams on
17, 18, 19 & 20 November. On exam days school starts at
8:40, students go to the exam venue for roll check and
notices. Exams start at 8:50am. Periods 3, 4 & 5 follow as
normal. A study timetable, has been emailed and is on
mywaka.trident.school.nz.
Reminder to all Year 9 and 10 students to bring
a calculator to Junior Maths Exams.

School will finish at 1pm on Thursday 20th November for a
Paid Union Meeting. It is essential that students come to
school on this day as they have exams in the morning.
Bus students and students whose parents want them to
remain on the school grounds will be supervised by non
union staff.
Year 9 student, Clarke Spence has been
selected for the 2015 National Youth Band
of New Zealand. This band is made up of
the very best under 23 year old brass and
percussion performers in New Zealand.
Clarke, who plays the Cornet, is only 14
and will be the youngest member of the
band.
The National Youth Band will assemble in
Blenheim in late January to practice for 5 days before
presenting concerts in Nelson, Westport and Blenheim.
Clarke will join several former Trident High School students
who have also gained selection including two of his brothers
Mitchell and Luke Spence together with Cody Tauranga,
Sariah Ratford and Callum Mallett.

CAREERS CORNER
All Year 9 students have been given the Year 10 Subject
Selection Information Booklet that describes compulsory and
optional courses for Y10 students in 2015. Included with the
booklet is the Subject Selection Form that needs to be
completed and signed by both the parent and the student
and returned to the form teacher no later than Tuesday 18
November. If you need another copy of the booklet or the
form they cam be accessed on mywaka or our website
www.trident.school.nz. Students are offered a wide range of
options at Y10 and need to consider their choices carefully as
they look forward to NCEA.
Metal Technology students have been pushing hard to finish
their projects for the year, get them home and complete
their stakeholder evaluations in their design portfolios.

2015—Students requiring help with their plans for 2015

Trades Academy 2015—Trades Academy is a great
opportunity for year 12 and 13 students to begin their
journey towards trades qualifications and a future career.
Applications are still being sought for 2015 in the
following areas:

Healthcare
Hair and Beauty
Agriculture
Business Administration

Waiariki Summer School—Waiariki Institute of
Technology is offering a range of summer school
programmes at both Whakatane and Mokoia (Rotorua)
campuses. Some of these programmes are free or have a
small charge, many of them carry NZQA credits. Free
transport may be available from Whakatane to Rotorua.

Funding Tertiary Study—If you are thinking about tertiary
study next year it is important to consider the financial
implications. We encourage all students to apply for
financial scholarships. Generally speaking students need
to find the scholarships themselves and then we will
support them in putting an application together.
Students have access to the Breakout database on any
school computer, they will find Breakout on the mywaka
page. Please come and see Ms Wildash for assistance.
Alternatively you can access Breakout at the library or
REAP.

This netball team named ‘Rotary Internationals’ not only
represents Whakatane and Kawerau Rotary Clubs but
incoming and out going exchange students. These incoming
students have never heard of netball let alone played; so far
they have lost 2 games and won 3.
In February 2015 Trident High School will
again welcome a group of 20 students
from Hijirigaoka Junior High School,
Tama City, Tokyo, Japan. They will be
staying for 12 nights from Thursday 26th
February until Tuesday 10th March. Over the years this
group has been visiting Trident High School, many students
from both Trident and Hijirigaoka have benefited from the
shared experiences and lasting relationships resulting from
the visits. Hosting these students is an opportunity to bring
Japanese language and culture into your home and to
share our unique Kiwi lifestyle and culture with our
Japanese friends. An accommodation allowance of $30 per
night will be provided to host families. Please contact
Hilary Harison (TIC Japanese) for a detailed itinerary and
homestay application form or call into the school office.

KIA MANAWA NUI—HAVE COURAGE
1st—5th December is a busy
week for all junior students at
Trident with the Year 10 Camps
and the special programme in
place for the Year 9 Students.
Many thanks to all parents and
caregivers for supporting
students in registering early and
paying Camp Fees promptly. Please ensure your child has the
correct gear for their camp.
Consent/Medical forms must be completed by parents/
caregivers and returned to the Teacher-in-charge of the
student’s camp.
Camp Fees must be paid in full prior to departure.
All Year 10 students who are not going away on camp are
enrolled in the School Based Activites. They will take part in
the programme which has been organised by staff. Students
will benefit from a range of practical and cultural activities.
The week will be busy but fun.
For Year 9 Students there is a special thematic based
programme where classes in Science, Social Studies, Maths
and English come together in a cross-curricular broad study
aimed at solving through co-operative work, a complex
problem. It is important that the students bring paper, pens
and PE gear everyday. They also need to be in correct
uniform.
All Students are expected to be at school for the full week
and if your child is going to be away it is important that you
inform the office as soon as possible.
Come along to the Port Ohope Yacht Club
on Sunday 16th from 11.30am—12.30pm.
Membership for Juniors only $30, the club

All books and gear need to be returned and
fees paid before 3rd December for your son/
daughter to be able to receive a School
Magazine and to obtain Ball tickets
(if applicable). Leaving Certificates will also be
given out on this day for Year 13 students.
