Announces
Fundamentals of Livelihood Promotion (FLP)
17th – 22nd November, 2014 at Hyderabad
It is now widely acknowledged among scholars, practitioners and policy makers that reduction of
endemic poverty is best achieved through promotion of sustainable livelihoods. The idea of
livelihood promotion is as deceptively simple as it is complex to implement.
The body of knowledge required to understand this complexity is drawn from multiple disciplines.
Consequently, to translate the concepts into practice requires a well-planned convergence of
theory and best practices. Promotion of different livelihood activities require familiarity with a
distinct set of domain knowledge and practices. Yet, there are common concepts and processes
that cut across livelihoods activities irrespective of the geography and sector it is located in.
Through a learning workshop, this common denominator is put together as the Fundamentals of
Livelihood Promotion (FLP).
Pre-eminence of ILRT / BASIX SEG
Over the last 9 years, ILRT (formerly the Livelihood School) has offered a variety of capacity
building services to livelihood promoting organizations and other stakeholders. The content and
approach to capacity building is enriched by a number of allied activities such as research (exposte and ex-ante), documentation and public policy analysis. Knowledge products offered by
ILRT, therefore, reflects the varied lessons from activities of BASIX SEG members as well as
ground breaking developments across the world in the field of Livelihood promotion. FLP is one
such product that exemplifies the knowledge dissemination mandate of ILRT.
This revised program has been developed in line with the knowledge and skills from the latest
Resource Book for Livelihood Promotion that Institute of Livelihood Research and Training has
recently published.
Who should participate?
FLP is designed to enhance the knowledge base as well as skills that inform best practices for
Livelihood Promotion. Field-level project managers of livelihood promoting agencies, key
functionaries responsible for livelihoods program design and program monitoring, and scholars
from academia teaching and doing research on livelihood related topics would find this program
suitable.
How will they benefit

of livelihood and the livelihood promotion processes applicable across different sociopolitical and economic conditions. The FLP will help participants appreciate the
