About Topic
The term ‘sustainable development’ is not new. But the term ‘sustainable rural
livelihood’ somewhat is.In fact it can be treated as an extended arm of the objective of
‘inclusive growth’ in India. The concept of sustainable rural livelihood can be developed as a
tool which can be used to achieve the major goals of rural development, poverty reduction and
environment preservation.
Rural livelihood is closely connected to natural resources. Since the spread of economic
and social infrastructure is slower in villages, the residents have to depend more on activities
related to the primary sector or occupations which are more traditional in nature. It is common
knowledge that these occupations are related to farming, cropping, cattle rearing, dairy farming,
mining, honey bee raising, compost manufacturing etc. Moving a little further these may also
include people involved in handicrafts, weaving, works of artisans, blacksmiths and carpenters
etc. Again with technology trying to make a foray into the rural areas (though at a slow pace),
the rural activities themselves have been subject to diversification although in a limited way. A
major expansion in its activities can also be related to establishment of food processing
industries, horticulture and floriculture along with other agro based industries.
The growing focus on ‘rural livelihood patterns’ especially in case of developing nations
many a times has raised pertinent questions as to the sustainability of these livelihoods.
Literature as well as self observation supports the view that the livelihood options in urban areas
are definitely more sustainable because of sustainability of market force of demandThe meaning
of sustainable livelihood is yet not clear especially in case of rural sector.Application of various
types of capital like financial, economic, social and human resources are cited to play a role in
fostering sustainability. The role of governing institutions in sustainability of rural livelihood
also needs to be researched in more depth and highlighted further. In today’s context sustaining
the human created occupations and livelihood activities without harming or disregarding the
environment is also the need of the hour. With this perspective in mind research papers are
sought on the following themes for discussion at the conference
1. Scope and coverage of sustainable rural livelihood Programmes.
2. Traditional and Emerging rural livelihoods
3. Innovations in rural livelihood
4. Role of economic, social, financial and human capital in rural livelihood.
