Crashing Waters at Creation
Southern Harmony
Chancel Choir
Crashing waters at creation, ordered by the Spirit’s breath, first to witness day’s beginning
from the brightness of night’s death.
Cleansing water once at Jordan closed around the one foretold, opened to reveal the glory
ever new and ever old.
Living water, never ending, quench the thirst and flood the soul. Wellspring, source of life
eternal, drench our dryness, make us whole.

11:00 Worship Service
Introduction to the Service
The pastor addresses the congregation:
Brothers and sisters in Christ:
Through the sacrament of Baptism
we are initiated into Christ’s holy church.
We are incorporated into God’s mighty acts of salvation
and given new birth through water and the Spirit.
All this is God’s gift, offered to us without price.
Do you, as Christ’s body, the church,
reaffirm both your rejection of sin
and your commitment to Christ?
Renunciation of Sin
The pastor addresses the parents:
We do.
Will you nurture one another in the Christian faith and
life and include this child now before you in your care?
With God’s help we will proclaim the good news
and live according to the example of Christ.
On behalf of the whole church, I ask you:
Do you renounce the spiritual forces of wickedness,
reject the evil powers of this world
and repent of your sin?
I do.
Do you accept the freedom and power God gives you
to resist evil, injustice and oppression
in whatever forms the present themselves?
We will surround Smith
with a community of love and forgiveness,
that he may grow in his service to others.
We will pray for him,
that he may be a true disciple
who walks in the way that leads to life.
I do.
Thanksgiving Over the Water
Do you confess Jesus Christ as your Savior,
put your whole trust in his grace,
and promise to serve him as your Lord,
in union with the church which Christ has opened
to people of all ages, nations, and races?
Baptism
I do.
Will you nurture Smith
in Christ’s holy church,
that by your teaching and example he may be guided
to accept God’s grace for himself,
to profess his faith openly,
and to lead a Christian life?
I will.
Smith, I baptize you in the name of the Father,
and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit
Amen.

MED-ITATION

While it is college football season, I am taking
advantage of analogies that relate the church
to things that happen in a football game. One
of the cheers that we hear from the sideline is a
statement of who the team is. For example; “We
are blank (school name)!” – “We are Bulldogs!”
– “We are War Eagles!” – “We are Podunk
High!” – So you don’t get mad at me, here’s one
for you who feel left out; “We are ________ (fill
in the blank). Feel better now?
Well, here is the analogy. Who are we as a
church? “We are Griffin FUMC!” How are we
known in the Griffin community? When the
general public of Griffin, Georgia, hear our
church’s name what do they think? What will
they say about us? “Oh, yeah, that’s the church
who __________.”
How would you fill in this blank?
In my almost a year-and-a-half as your pastor,
I go to different places and events all around
Griffin. When I tell folks I am the pastor of
Griffin FUMC, I take note when I hear what
others say about our church. I’ve heard things
like, “Oh, that’s a very generous church in our
community.” I’ve heard, “Yeah, that church
supports a lot of missions in our city.” Also,
“We know some people who go to that church
and they love going there.” One comment
I overheard recently was, “Every time I go
by that church there are a lot of cars in their
parking lot.”
“We are Griffin FUMC!”
If you had to describe your church, what would
you say about it? Would you description be
one that is positive and uplifting? Would you
describe it as a church that cares about people,
or a friendly church? Maybe you would say
it’s a church that is way behind on its budget
giving. Or maybe you’d say, “My church is the
most active church I’ve ever been a part of.”
Or, “I love the music in my church.” Or, “There
are always plenty of Bible studies to choose
from in my church.” Or, “My church has a
great Preschool.”
What would you say about your church:
Griffin FUMC?
In my observation as your pastor for just
over a year, I would say about us that we are a
church who believes and lives out our promise
to God as members of Griffin FUMC. “We are
Griffin FUMC,” means that we are a people
who support God’s church with “our prayers,
our presence, our gifts, our service and our
witness of Jesus Christ for the transformation
of the world!”
And that’s why I love being your pastor!
Peace and grace,
Med

Jesus And Me (J.A.M.)
Sunday Night
In J.A.M., for the last six weeks, we have been
teaching children that “God Speaks”. We
encourage each of you, big and small, young
and old, to take time to slow down and listen
to God speak to you. You must quiet yourself,
tune in to His voice, and then you will hear
what He is speaking to your heart.
Youth is tonight @ 5:30-7:30p in the CEC. Two
words: FEAR FACTOR. Come prepared to be
scared…or just grossed out?
Trunk-Or-Treat
Plan to join us for our annual Trunk-or-Treat
on Wednesday, October 29th following the

our trunks, truck beds, motorcycles, etc. and
pass out treats to our children (toddlers-5th
graders) in the front circle of the church. There
will also be a photo spot, bounce houses, and
face painting. We look forward to seeing you
and your children there!
Confirmation
Confirmation is tonight from 5:30-7:30p in the

by St. John. Our volunteers will be asked to
cook, slice, and freeze the turkey in ziplock
bags about two weeks before Thanksgiving then
return the frozen meat to St. John. We do not
need help with the cookies.
Please call 770-228-3020 and talk to Debby, Fay,
