Postlude Toccata in D minor Dr. Richard Chewning, organ Johann Sebastian Bach THE BAPTISMAL COVENANT Smith James Granade Son of Nick and Alaina Granade Sunday, October 26, 2014 11:00 Worship Service Introduction to the Service The pastor addresses the congregation: Brothers and sisters in Christ: Through the sacrament of Baptism we are initiated into Christ’s holy church. We are incorporated into God’s mighty acts of salvation and given new birth through water and the Spirit. All this is God’s gift, offered to us without price. Do you, as Christ’s body, the church, reaffirm both your rejection of sin and your commitment to Christ? Renunciation of Sin The pastor addresses the parents: We do. Will you nurture one another in the Christian faith and life and include this child now before you in your care? With God’s help we will proclaim the good news and live according to the example of Christ. On behalf of the whole church, I ask you: Do you renounce the spiritual forces of wickedness, reject the evil powers of this world and repent of your sin? I do. Do you accept the freedom and power God gives you to resist evil, injustice and oppression in whatever forms the present themselves? We will surround Smith with a community of love and forgiveness, that he may grow in his service to others. We will pray for him, that he may be a true disciple who walks in the way that leads to life. I do. Thanksgiving Over the Water Do you confess Jesus Christ as your Savior, put your whole trust in his grace, and promise to serve him as your Lord, in union with the church which Christ has opened to people of all ages, nations, and races? Baptism I do. Will you nurture Smith in Christ’s holy church, that by your teaching and example he may be guided to accept God’s grace for himself, to profess his faith openly, and to lead a Christian life? I will. Smith, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit Amen. One of the cheers that we hear from the sideline is a statement of who the team is. For example; “We are blank (school name)!” – “We are Bulldogs!” – “We are War Eagles!” – “We are Podunk High!” – So you don’t get mad at me, here’s one for you who feel left out; “We are ________ (fill in the blank). Feel better now? Well, here is the analogy. Who are we as a church? “We are Griffin FUMC!” How are we known in the Griffin community? When the general public of Griffin, Georgia, hear our church’s name what do they think? What will they say about us? “Oh, yeah, that’s the church who __________.” How would you fill in this blank? In my almost a year-and-a-half as your pastor, I go to different places and events all around Griffin. When I tell folks I am the pastor of Griffin FUMC, I take note when I hear what others say about our church. I’ve heard things like, “Oh, that’s a very generous church in our community.” I’ve heard, “Yeah, that church supports a lot of missions in our city.” Also, “We know some people who go to that church and they love going there.” One comment I overheard recently was, “Every time I go by that church there are a lot of cars in their parking lot.” “We are Griffin FUMC!” If you had to describe your church, what would you say about it? Would you description be one that is positive and uplifting? Would you describe it as a church that cares about people, or a friendly church? Maybe you would say it’s a church that is way behind on its budget giving. Or maybe you’d say, “My church is the most active church I’ve ever been a part of.” Or, “I love the music in my church.” Or, “There are always plenty of Bible studies to choose from in my church.” Or, “My church has a great Preschool.” What would you say about your church: Griffin FUMC? In my observation as your pastor for just over a year, I would say about us that we are a church who believes and lives out our promise to God as members of Griffin FUMC. “We are Griffin FUMC,” means that we are a people who support God’s church with “our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service and our witness of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world!” And that’s why I love being your pastor!
