A Word from the Pastor …
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
I write this piece on Wednesday morning, right after celebrating Holy Mass on the Memorial (Feast Day) of St. John
Paul II. Being myself a product of the “John Paul II Generation,” I cannot but give thanks to the Lord for permitting me
to live my youth, my eight years in the seminary, and first six years as a priest, while John Paul II shepherded the
Church.
Back in the days when I had time for reading (a rarity today), I devoured whatever writings I could lay my eyes on about
him or by him. In the year 2000, I had the great joy of concelebrating at two Masses that he celebrated. By that time,
his physical decline was very noticeable. But so was his insistence that he would carry the weight of his Petrine Ministry united with the crucified Christ.
When, some time before going to the Father’s House on April 2, 2005, he was asked how he wishes to be remembered,
John Paul II answered: “The Pope of the Family!” His writings and his speeches made it amply clear that he had an
enormous love for the well-being of families, Christian and otherwise. Maybe we should pick them up again and read
them. I would definitely recommend that married couples read a book he wrote as a young bishop in Poland, “Love and
Responsibility” (husbands, buy it as a Christmas gift for your wives!).
The writings that really express his understanding of family life have been put together in a book called “Theology of
the Body.” The beauty of the Church’s teachings on marriage, particularly on human sexuality, are expressed most eloquently in these writings. Marriage is seen as a “communion of persons,” called to realize themselves in self-donation,
mirroring the love of the Members of the Holy Trinity. In this world-view, children born to married couples are seen as
a gift, rather than a right, or an imposition on one’s freedom.
During this month of October, known as the Month of the Rosary, we are all called to reflect on the state of our family
life, and turn to the Virgin Mary for help (remember the many struggles that Pope John Paul II was able to overcome
thanks to her intercession). The only way for our families to be happy and live in harmony, even in the midst of adversity, is by following God’s Plan as expressed in the teachings of the Church. Period. I have seen many other models,
therapies and philosophies, but they do not work.
The Extraordinary Synod on the Family that ended in Rome during this past week sought to provide suggestions to help
family life around the world. While it is important for the Church to provide a shepherd’s and mother’s care to families
that are in crisis, we should never tire in witnessing to the fact that the way that the Church proposes – based on mutual
forgiveness, openness to receiving the children that the Lord’s wishes to gift the couple with, perseverance in prayer and
participation in the Eucharist at least every Sunday and Holy Day of Obligation – works!
We hope that in the coming year, we can continue to reflect on the beauty of Christian marriage, as we prepare for the
World Meeting of Families that will be held in Philadelphia on September 22-27, 2015. Less than a year away; less than
a two hour drive from Belleville. I hope that a number of our families will participate in this unique event with Pope
Francis and families from around the world.
In his message at the close of the Synod, Pope Francis spoke to the participants of “the temptation to come down off the
Cross, to please the people, and not stay there, in order to fulfill the Will of the Father; to bow down to a worldly spirit
instead of purifying it and bending it to the Spirit of God.” It is clear that the answer is not in watering down the
Church’s teachings on marriage, but to present these teachings in a way that makes them attractive, because, yes, with
God’s grace, holiness is possible.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Fr. Ivan Sciberras

POPE FRANCIS AT GENERAL WEDNESDAY AUDIENCE
– THE CHURCH, BODY OF CHRIST
Dear brothers and sisters, good morning.
When you want to highlight how the elements
that form a reality are closely united with one another
and together form one single body, the image of the body
is often used. Starting with the Apostle Paul, this expression has been applied to the Church and was recognized
as its deepest and most beautiful distinguishing feature.
Thus today, we want to ask ourselves: in what sense does
the Church form a body? And why is it called the "body of
Christ"?
The Book of Ezekiel describes a vision that is
somewhat particular and shocking, but one which instills
confidence and hope in our hearts. God shows the
prophet a field of bones, broken and parched: an entire
plain full of bones. God asks him, then, to invoke the
Spirit upon them. At that point, the bones move, they
begin to draw closer to each other and join together,
nerves begin to grow and then flesh and thus the body is formed, whole and full of life (cf. Ez 37.1 to 14). Well, this is
the Church - the masterpiece of the Spirit, which instills in each of us new life of the Risen Christ and places us next
to each other, to help and support each other, thus making all us one body, built in the communion and love.
The Church, however, is not only a body built in the Spirit: The Church is the Body of Christ! It is the great
gift that we receive on the day of our Baptism! In the sacrament of Baptism, in fact, Christ makes us His, welcoming
us into the heart of the mystery of the Cross, the supreme mystery of His love for us, to make us rise again with Him
as new creatures. Behold, thus the Church was born, and so the Church recognizes herself as the body of Christ!
Baptism is truly a rebirth, which regenerates us in Christ, making us a part of Him, and unites us intimately among
each other, as members of the same body, of which He is the head (cf. Rom 12.5, 1 Cor 12, 12-13).
What emerges from this, then, is a profound communion of love. In this sense, it is illuminating how Paul, in
exhorting husbands to "love their wives as their own bodies," states: "Even as Christ does the Church, because we are
members of His body" (Eph 5.28 to 30). How nice it would be if we remembered what we are more often, what the
Lord Jesus has made us, we are His body, that body that nothing and no one can snatch from Him and which he
covers with all His passion and all His love, just like a bridegroom with his bride. This thought, however, must give
rise in us to the desire to respond to the Lord Jesus and share His love among ourselves, as living members of His
own body.
In Paul's time, the community of Corinth experienced a lot of difficulties in this sense, experiencing, as we
too often do, divisions, jealousies, misunderstandings and marginalization. All of these things are not good, because
rather than building and helping the Church to grow as the Body of Christ, they shatter it into many pieces, they dismember it. And this also happens in our day. Just think of our Christian communities, our parishes, think of how
many divisions there are in our neighborhoods, how much envy, gossip, how much misunderstanding and marginalization. And what does it do? It dismembers us. It is the beginning of war. War does not begin on the battlefield: war,
wars begin in the heart, with this misunderstanding, division, envy, with this fighting among each other. And the
community of Corinth was just like this, they were champions in this! And the Apostle, then, gave some practical
advice to the Corinthians that can apply to us: Do not be jealous, but appreciate the gifts and the quality of our
brothers and sisters in our communities. Because jealousy grows, and a jealous heart is a bitter heart. It is a heart
that is never happy; it is a heart that disrupts the community. But what should I do? Appreciate the gifts and the
quality of others in our communities, of our brothers.
Appreciating the qualities and countering division; drawing close and participating in the suffering of the
poorest and the most needy; expressing gratitude for everything - saying thank you, the heart that knows how to say
thank you, is a good heart, a noble heart, a heart that is happy because it knows how to say thank you. I ask you: do
we all know to say thank you? No? Not always? Because envy, jealousy holds us back a bit? Everyone, and especially
those who perform the most humble and hidden services; and, finally, this is the advice that the apostle Paul gives
the Corinthians and we to should give one another: never consider yourself superior to others - how many people
feel superior to others! We too, often sound like the Pharisee in the parable: "Thank you Lord that I am not like that
person, that I am superior". But this is bad, do not do that! When you are tempted to this, remember your sins, those
no one knows, shame yourself before God and say, "You, Lord, you know who is superior, I close my mouth". And
this is good. And always, in charity consider yourself as members who belong to one another and who live and give
yourselves for the benefit of all (cf. 1 Cor 12-14).

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK. . .
Our school will be celebrating Red Ribbon
Week beginning October 27. It is the oldest and largest drug prevention program in the United States.
During this week, everyone at St. Peter’s School will
be participating in a variety of events, signifying their
support for a drug free lifestyle.
The Red Ribbon Program originated in California with groups wearing red ribbons in memory of
Officer Enrique Camarena, a U.S. Drug Enforcement
agent , who died in the line of duty in 1985. When his
mother tried to dissuade Officer Camarena from joining the agency he replied, “ I can’t not do this, I’m
only one person but I want to make a difference.”
During this week we remember all those who
have given so much in this struggle as St Peter’s
School strives to make a difference.
Our students will recite the following pledge:
I pledge to lead a drug-free life.
I want to be healthy and happy.
I will say no to alcohol.
I will say no to tobacco.
I will say no to illegal drugs.
I will help my friends say no.
I pledge to stand up for what I know is right.
St. Peter's School will hold its annual Tricky Tray on
Thursday November 20 at The Chandelier, Belleville. The school is now accepting donations including
empty and/or completed baskets, cash donations, gift
cards as well as new items. For further information call
