Christ Servant Ministry Training at Hopewell
An excellent opportunity is available to train as a Christ Servant Minister (CSM) right here, conveniently,
at Hopewell! As part of our Planting Seeds for Ministry Growth event, an advanced course in leading is
being offered for people throughout the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church
seeking CSM certification. Session 1 on Friday, November 14 (7:00-9:15pm) will be led by Pastor Amy
Banka, and Sessions 2 and 3 on Saturday, November 15 (9:00am-6:30pm) will be led by Clint Jenkin,
Vice President of the Barna Research Group and keynote speaker at Planting Seeds.

Participation in this 10-hour course will meet half of the requirements for CSM certification. The course
to complete certification is planned to be offered at Hopewell early in 2015.
Hopewell United Methodist Church Strategic Map/Long Range Plan
Goal:
Full implementation of our cemetery renovation plan, including labyrinth construction and memorial gardens, and integration of cemetery ministries into Hope
well administrative systems.
Result: Let us give thanks that our cemetery renovation plan has come to fruition! What
a joy that we are now able to offer alternatives to traditional burial to those who
choose cremation. Pastor Steve and several Hopewell members who have purchased a niche in the columbaria had the opportunity recently to describe the
“green, attractive, local, affordable (GALA)” aspect of the cemetery renovation to
the Philadelphia Inquirer, providing an opportunity to share this blessing with the
community. Praise God!
Assistance Fund Thank You:
Your gifts to the Assistance Fund make a difference. We recently received this thank you note “Thank you so much for the food gift cards. The fact that I will actually be able to get a substantial
amount of groceries means more to me than you will ever know. I was so happy that I could actually
buy some really healthy food for [myself and my daughter] thanks to your church’s generosity. Nobody has ever helped us out like this before. What your church has done for us is truly a blessing.”

Coat Drive Please drop off your gently used, clean coats at the Donation Station
outside the FLC. These coats will be distributed between the Salvation Army of
Coatesville and the Salvation Army Service Unit in Glenmoore, the CYWA
(a shelter for women and children in Coatesville) and City Gate (a men’s shelter in
Coatesville). We will be collecting coats until Thanksgiving. Can You Help?
“...Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none…” (Luke 3:11)
Food Drive at Stauffer’s (formerly Croppers) in Guthriesville. In response to
the urgent need for non-perishable food in Chester County, Stauffer’s has agreed to
partner with Hopewell to help stock the shelves at the Chester County Food Bank. We
will have a drop-off table in the foyer. On Saturday, November 1st from 10am to
6pm, two people are needed each hour to hand out flyers and collect the food. Chester
County Food Bank will have a truck on site that we can load as the food is donated.
There is a sign up sheet at the bulletin board downstairs at the Donation Station or you
can call Sue Lehman, 484-678-6789 for more information.
Hopewell Community Dinner on CHRISTMAS DAY Hopewell will once again be serving
a traditional turkey dinner, with all the trimmings, for the community on Christmas Day! As it was last
year, this free dinner is for anyone who wishes to attend, including those who would otherwise be eating
alone, or not at all. An information meeting about the dinner for all those who are able to help plan it will
be Wednesday, November 5th at 7pm. Contact Becky Bennington ([email protected]) or Deb
Boyd ([email protected]). You do not have to be able to serve at the dinner on Christmas Day to
be part of this team. People are needed to help with the pre-planning of it.
Holiday Cantata On Sunday, December 21st in the 9:30 and 10:55 Sanctuary services, Hopewell
Church will be presenting the Christmas musical, We're Glad You Came. We need many singers and instrumentalists to make this a truly God-glorifying worship experience, so I want invite you to bring your
musical gifts to present before the Lord. All voice parts (SATB), woodwinds, brass, percussion, strings,
and keyboards will find a place to serve. There is an extensive, yet flexible, rehearsal schedule. Please

Shop With the Sheriff Please save Saturday, December 6th from 9:00am-3:00pm to help with the
“Shop With the Sheriff” event. The Chester County Sheriff’s Department will be taking the students from
the Chester County Family Academy to Wal-Mart to shop for Christmas gifts for their families. Hopewell will be helping by providing lots of volunteers, lots of gift wrapping supplies, and lots of love to
make this a wonderful day for the CCFA children! If you can play games with children, help them wrap

Service in the Connection In 2009, our Senior Pastor was elected to serve on the Board of Directors for the Mid-Atlantic Foundation. Investment management, endowments, stewardship education, and
Planned Giving opportunities are some of the services provided by the Foundation for the churches and
agencies of three of our Annual Conferences. Pastor Steve will attend a meeting of the Stewardship Team
in Fallston, MD on Thursday, October 30th from 9:30 am until noon.

Sunday School @ 9:30 is offered for children ages 3 (by 9/1/14) to 6th grade. Room assignments
are posted throughout the church hallways.
Junior Church @ 10:55 is offered for children ages 3 (by 9/1/14) to 6th grade. Children should
proceed to worship with their families and then join our Junior Church leaders at the specified time in
the order of worship. Children can be picked up after worship in Room Adam (the church library).
God’s Children Hayride All 3rd to 6th grade children are invited to join us on Sunday,
November 2nd from 3 to 5pm for a hayride and campfire at Highland Orchards. A light dinner will be
provided. Cost is $5 per child. Permission forms can be found in the church lobby.
Socktober Mission We have a goal to collect 500 pairs of new socks for the ‘Sock it to Us’ program, sponsored by Family Services of Chester County. These socks will be distributed to homeless or
disadvantaged children, women & men through human service agencies and shelters in Chester County.
Please help support this mission and warm some toes this October!! Socks can be taken to the Sunday
school classrooms. Prizes will be awarded to the top three classes! Deadline for sock donations is
November 2nd.
Operation Christmas Child Mission We are collecting items for Operation Christmas Child
throughout the fall. Please bring in items for this amazing mission any time before November 9th.
Items can be dropped off in the Children’s Ministries bin at the Donation Station. Suggestions for
donated items are: toothbrushes, toothpaste, band-aids, bar soap, washcloths, pens, markers, crayons,
coloring books, notebooks, jewelry, hair accessories, small balls, candy (no chocolate), and small toys.

Creative Arts for Christ A drama block will begin on October 27th, with the drama being presented
the weekend of November 22nd/23rd at the Contemporary Services. The group meets on Monday nights

Mom’s Group is studying the book Chaotic Joy: Finding Abundance in the Messiness of Motherhood by Megan Breedlove. You can join at any time! We meet every Tuesday during the school year
from 9:15 to 11:15am. Child care is provided. This is a wonderful group of women who meet for Bible

Upward Basketball & Cheerleading Registrations are now being accepted for the 2015 season

South Africa Film Night
Friday, November 7, 2014, 7:00 - 10:00 PM
Hopewell UMC will welcome the Honors Students from the Thursday 4:25 PM class at West Chester
University (led by Dr. Kevin Dean and Pastor Steve Morton). Again this year: a
showing of Invictus, the 2009 film which tells the story of how Nelson Mandela, in his
first term as the South African President, united the apartheid-torn land by enlisting the
national rugby team on a mission to win the 1995 World Cup. Also showing that
night: Yesterday, an Oscar-nominated, South Africa produced film about a young
mother’s valiant struggle in light of AIDS. The transformation in South Africa today
is studied by these students for its lessons in leadership. This is the biggest night of the
year at Hopewell UMC for welcoming college students into our building! Join us on
Friday night, November 7th for these films, some fellowship with the WCU students, and a celebration
of the South Africa mission.

Hopewell UMC is producing a brand new Bible Study curriculum for the
upcoming holiday season called Advent Dreams. Based on the sequence of
four nighttime dreams in Matthew 1:18-2:23, this study will review how God
used dreams as a vehicle for guidance, warning, and challenge among the heroes in Matthew’s Christmas Story - and will invite participants to consider
whether God speaks to them and to the Church in dreams today. Research for
this project was accomplished largely during Pastor Steve’s recent study leave
at Duke Divinity School. The primary printed resource for this material is the International Critical Commentary on Matthew 1-7 by W. D. Davies (renown New Testament scholar who began his teaching career
at Duke in the 1950’s and then later returned there until his retirement) and D. C. Allison (a PhD student
at Duke under Davies, who now teaches New Testament at Princeton Theological Seminary). The four
video presentations in Advent Dreams are written and delivered by Pastor Steve Morton and Pastor Amy
Banka. Filming by Hopewell and QVC’s Pete Willenbrock occurs tomorrow morning, October 27, and
will be supported by the ace production team of Deb Collins and Deb Boyd. Advent Dreams will be
offered starting in mid-to-late November in a dozen or so times and places, and is certainly available
(free!) to any other congregation which is interested in a fresh Bible Study curriculum for the Advent season.
Hopewell in the Community For the fourteenth year, Pastor Steve is conducting lectures at West Chester University during many Thursday late-afternoons this fall.
The presentations are part of an Honors Program seminar exploring the topic of personal leadership development and community building, and feature his experiences
from South Africa. This Thursday, Steve will offer presentations on “Economic Realities in Leadership” and “Self Care.”
Scholarship Funds
Hopewell UMC is committed to helping its students with their educational costs along the way. Three
Scholarship Funds have been in existence for a number of years. Each is named in honor of a special

scholarship aid for students. The Don and Joyce Bower Fund produces annual interest which is usually
granted to a first year college student. The Preston Buller Fund is designed for the same purpose. The
Mary Barringer Fund is used to provide scholarships for little children to attend the Hopewell Christian
Preschool. A fourth scholarship fund was started in 2008 to provide dollars for two boys in Mississippi at
the time of their post-high school education. This is part of our commitment to on-going relief in a
Katrina-ravaged Gulf Coast. Praise God for this vital part of our ministry together! Please be aware that
you may make a financial contribution to any of these funds at any time during the year.

October Designated Giving This month nearly forty (40) folks from Hopewell UMC and Lansdale: Christ UMC traveled together to Crisfield, MD to serve a community which was greatly affected by
SuperStorm Sandy. Two years later this little town on the southern tip of the Chesapeake Bay is still
struggling to rebuild. From experience, we know that each of our mission teams comes across homeowner needs that are not covered by storm recovery dollars, and we always wish there were a way to
help: funding for something extra, like a new stove, curtains, or rugs. Your gifts to October Designated
Giving will allow our team to keep an eye open and prayerfully discern how discretionary dollars from
our congregation could best be spent (even after we visitors leave). Received to date: $996.00.
