President’s message
Welcome home Sugarloafers,
As usual for this time of year, we
have been having some frosty
nights and some warm days. Last
week, we all got excited when
the snowmakers fired up the
guns to make sure everything
was up to snuff. You will remember last spring that John Diller
said we would be making snow,
weather permitting, a few weeks
earlier.This would hopefully
allow the mountain to open
with more terrain.
Danny Barker, the director of
Former Ski Club President G. Norton Luce receives an award for
the Sugarloaf Ski Club from USEASA President Paul Parker.
Grooming and Snowmaking, was
recently filling me in on some of
this summer’s on-mountain improvements. A new bridge was installed on Slasher, along with new
snowmaking pipe, making this important connector trail much easier to navigate, and enabling it to
open earlier. Another widening project was Peavey X-cut; there will be a lot more room at the
entrances from Hayburner and King’s Landing, making the cross-cut much more user friendly.
Also, my view from the Ski Club office is getting better. The east end of the Base Lodge is getting a
much needed facelift. Between that and the new paint job on Gondola Village, things are looking
pretty spiffy on this side of the mountain.
The big news this year is the return in March of the US Alpine National Championships; the last
time we hosted this event was in 2008. It will be exciting to watch the US Ski Team once again race
on our Narrow Gauge trail. Although it is certainly a biggie, the US Alpine Nationals is just one of a
very full slate of events lined up for this season. In March and early April, we will be hosting Nor Am
speed finals and U16 Alpine Championships, as well as the annual Seth Wescott Snowboardercross
event, USCSA Championships and several freestyle events. Besides having great competition venues,
Sugarloaf has a great ski club that supports all levels of competition; this is a big reason that high
level events keep coming back to us. All of you who are part of the Sugarloaf Mountain Ski Club
should be very proud.
As you can see from our calendar we will have a full slate of social events this year, from the ever
popular Oktoberfest, beer tastings, and midweek socials, to our annual signature event, the Snowball.
This year, the event features the very popular group North of Nashville. I hope to see many of you
at some or all of these events.
Have a great season, and we’ll see you on the hill,
Bruce

With the induction of the Class
of 2014, the number of skiers
recognized by the Hall of Fame
since its first induction banquet
in 2003 will reach 105.
The Maine Ski Hall of Fame
was formed to recognize those
Maine skiers that have brought
distinction to Maine skiing or
made significant contributions
to the sport. They may
include competitors, coaches,
instructors, ski patrollers, ski
area builders, managers and
volunteers. As a division of the
Ski Museum of Mane, the Hall
of Fame records the history of
Maine skiing through the
biographies produced for
each class.
Brud Folger was a successful
competitive skier in high
school and college who made
his mark in coaching. He
coached the UMO ski team
for 28 years, competing in
NCAA Division I against the
top teams in the country. During his tenure he had many
skiers qualify in all four events,
and his teams won the Maine
State Ski Championships four
times in a row.
Nikki Pilavakis-Davoren
won her titles in boarder cross
before it was an Olympic
event, which is why her victories are unknown to many. She
started on a newly formed European tour and won enough
prize money to focus on SBX
full time. In 1999, Nikki won
the title of Women’s World
Champion. In four short years
she had become the best female SBX competitor in the
world.
Rob and Anna Parisien
are joining their sister Julie in
the Maine Ski Hall of Fame,
becoming the first family to
have three siblings so honored.
While Julie is better known,
Rob and Anna had outstanding
ski racing careers leading to
the Olympics in 1992 for Rob
and in 1994 for Anna. After
attending Burke Mountain
Academy, where both had
impressive junior results, it
was on to USSA competition.
Anna dominated J-II and J-I

competition, earning a place
on the US Ski Team in 1991.
She retired from ski racing
after the 1994 season at age
21. Rob earned his spot on
the US Ski Team in 1987 and
was the top American finisher
in GS in the 1991 World
Championships, and in the
Albertville Olympics in 1992.
Like his sister, he retired early
to attend college, graduating
from the University of Colorado in 1995 and Dartmouth
Medical School in 1999.
The other four inductees
include Carl Burnett who was
paralyzed below the waist in a
car crash at the age of five and
took up disabled skiing at age
12.Three years later he swept
all four junior national titles.
Named to the US Disabled
Team in 1998, Carl went on to
compete for nine years in
Nor-Am World Cup and
Olympics as a sit skier. He
skied in the Paralympics in Salt
Lake City in 2002, and in
Torino, Italy in 2006, where he
finished 5th in the Downhill.
Bill Briggs was born in Augusta without a hip socket on
his right side, and had to have
surgeries as a child simply to
make it possible for him to
walk. While his doctors believed he would eventually
spend his life in a wheel chair,
he proved to be a natural athlete who taught himself to ski.
He was certified as a ski instructor and became associated with Snow King Mountain
in Wyoming. It was on much
bigger mountains where he
became a legend in skiing.
After completing a series of
climbs and descents of major
mountains, including Mt.
Rainier, Bill had his hip permanently fused and in June, 1971,
after hiking to the top, he skied
the 13,770 foot Grand Teton.
His feats led to his induction
into the US National Ski Hall
of Fame.
Tom Gyger is one of those ski
patrolmen who have done a
lot more than just show up
and patrol weekends. Rather
than settle for simply meeting
the standards of a Senior Patroller, Tom got involved as a
first aid instructor and served
on the first aid staff of the
Eastern Division’s Junior Seminar. He then went on to serve
on the National Junior Seminar’s Medical Staff. When National Ski Patrol transitioned
from Red Cross First Aid to its
own Winter Emergency Care
program,Tom was in the middle of the work to make sure
everything went smoothly. For
his work and devotion he was
awarded the NSP Gold Merit
Star.
Dave Carter was an out-
standing cross country competitor in high school and college, but his biggest
contribution came in developing cross country ski centers in
Oxford and Bethel, where he
led countless young athletes
into the sport. By introducing
so many to the sport, Carter
has enhanced the cross country experience for skiers
throughout Western Maine.

Fame dinner on October

Chateau des Tagues
razed to make way
for Sugarbowl
A Valley landmark has been razed to make way
for a new bowling alley and restaurant.
“Sugarbowl” will open this winter.
One of the original “Valley”
hotels, the Chateau des Tagues,
was built by Sugarloaf Ski Club
member Leo Tague. It was a
smaller building, simply called
“Tagues”, and it was across the
street from the most recent
location. After a fire leveled
the original building, Leo decided to build something
grander on the present day
site. He called it “Chateau des
Tagues”. Along with Judson’s
and later The Red Stallion, it
was one of the “places to go”
in the Valley.
Chateau des Tagues changed
hands many times over the
years, and operated under various names. Among them:The
Mayor’s Place,The Carrabassett Valley Yacht Club, and finally, the Carrabassett Inn.
Below is a timeline, put together by “an old Sugarloafer”,
of its owners.

grew up right in the center of
the alpine ski industry. Mentored and coached by his
father Jean-Pierre Chatellard
(World Cup and Olympic Ski
Coach), Sean was privileged to
travel the world and train with
World Cup skiers throughout
his ski racing career. After racing FIS, Sean played three

The Birth of
Sugarloaf Village
Reprinted from Eastern Ski Bulletin, November 1960
“Year Round Recreational area Planned at Sugarloaf”
Kingfield, Me — Plans for a permanent village and recreational area on an 1800-acre
tract at the base of Sugarloaf mountain here have been announced.
Land for the development has been acquired by the Bigelow Corporation, headed by
George Fred Terry III, of Waterville.
Terry said that while the development was prompted primarily by the growth of
Sugarloaf Mountain as a major ski resort, the corporation envisions it as a year round
recreational area.
Across Town Line Road from Hug’s Restaurant,
this landmark is at an entrance to Sugarloaf
Village. The monument was designed and built
by Sugarloaf Village resident and architect
Charlie Hosford. He had a camp, which
included a tower, in Sugarloaf Village, and it
was featured in “Look” magazine in the 1960s.
Officers of the new corporation, in addition to Terry, include Adrian Asherman,Waterville, secretary-treasurer; Harvey Boynton, Kingfield, vice president, and Ralph
Clark, Gardiner, clerk. Directors include George Terry, Adrian Asherman, Harvey
Boynton, Jay Winter, Parker Poole and Alden MacDonald.
[Editor’s note:The 1,800 acres acquired by Bigelow Corporation encompassed land
going to the top of Bigelow Hill, as well as some of the land for today’s Sugarloaf
Golf Course. Sugarloaf Village as we know it today makes up only a small portion of
the original tract.]

hut-to-hut biking possible. MH&T trails are open for riding
through October, weather permitting. Mountain bikes with knobby
tires are recommended on MH&T trails.
