People are drawn to minyan for many reasons – to say kaddish for a loved one, to find comfort at a time of stress or sorrow, to help ensure a quorum for kaddish and Torah reading, or simply to perform the uplifting mitzvah of daily prayer, to praise and thank God for continually renewing the work of Creation and making our lives possible. I invite you to join our daily minyan this New Year on whatever basis feels comfortable for you. Feel free to contact me to explore the possibilities. On behalf of all of us at the Beth Ahm minyan, I wish you and your loved ones a good, sweet New Year 5775. “Drop in and Learn/Judaica on DVD” Wednesdays at 1 p.m. in the Teen Lounge Free and open to the community – all welcome, no reservations needed. I want to take the opportunity to thank our congregation and so many of you who made the celebration of my son Ari’s bar mitzvah so special. For our family, it was a wonderful celebration---even better than we could have anticipated. For me, part of what made it so great, was that it seemed to start several weeks before that special Shabbat and continued on for several weeks afterward. Everywhere I went, people asked if we were ready (yes we were), if we were excited (yes we were), if we were nervous (no we weren’t). Having been a part of so many celebrations with you, it was so special to have you celebrate with us. I could feel the generosity of your good wishes for Robin and I and for Ari. It enhanced the celebration more than I can express. When the weekend of the celebration came, we were ready. In addition to having our family and friends join us from out of town, having so many of you with us in shul that Saturday morning was overwhelming in a beautiful way. I’m sure that many of you will know what I mean when I say that the morning felt like a blur. My cheeks hurt from smiling and my hand hurt from shaking so many hands! It was a day that I hope to remember in as much detail as possible. When our family came to West Bloomfield and became a part of Beth Ahm, we didn’t have a celebration like this in mind. We had a shorter-term vision. Nevertheless, I am certain that part of the beauty of the day came from the fact that we have been so fortunate to be a part of Beth Ahm. I hope that we can all look forward to many celebrations together in the future. Todah Rabah. Rabbi Steven Rubenstein 248-851-6880 ext. 17 [email protected] Thumin Bet Midrash The Thumin Bet Midrash is a new initiative that offers opportunities for small group, hevruta, and in depth learning on select Jewish topics. Classes meet on Monday nights at Congregation Beth Ahm and feature many of the best instructors in our community. Contact Alison at 248-851-6880 or [email protected] to register. Yarhei Kallah—Pre High Holy Day MiniMester September 8, 15 and 22 7:30 - 8:30 p.m. $18 per course Making Meaning from the Mahzor The High Holy Day season is a gift of time in our busy lives. We are given the opportunity to reflect on the past, present, and future of our lives as individuals and as a community. The poems and prayers of the machzor can guide us to make the most of this introspection. In this course we will explore relevant themes in the machzor to prepare for a meaningful shul experience. Instructor: Ariel Wolgel Fall Semester: Monday’s October 20 - December 8 (8 sessions) 7:30 - 9:00 p.m. $50 per course Talmud Study This is a great opportunity for those who have studied some Talmud to take your study of Talmud to the next level. Each session will combine hevruta (learning with a partner) and exploring the text with Rabbi Faudem. The course will focus on texts from Masekhet Bava Metzia and will encompass topics such as fraud in the marketplace as well as the prohibition of causing others emotional pain. Texts will be available in the original Aramaic/Hebrew and in translation. Instructor: Rabbi Michele Faudem Reimagining Shmita You may not have the word Shmita on the tip of your tongue, but it just may be one of the most far-reaching social, economic, and environmental structures in the Torah. The Shmita or Sabbatical Year comes once every seven years and begins with Rosh Hashana this year. Join us as we explore the values embedded in the Shmita and how these values can play a role in your life in the coming year and beyond. Instructor: Rabbi Steven Rubenstein 10 Will the Real Elijah Please Stand Up? In Scripture, the Prophet Elijah is public enemy number one, a terrorist fugitive from the government. In Rabbinic lore, Elijah is a keeper of divine secrets, revealing insights into the mysteries of God’s mind. And in Jewish folklore, Elijah appears whenever and wherever he is most needed, offering the most unexpected of helping hands. Can these three figures really be the same prophet? How can we fit together all these clues? Why does the miracle worker who was taken away on a fiery chariot keep on returning to us, in such different guises? Instructor: Rabbi Stephen Belsky Message from the President The Talmud (Avot 1:6) tells us “aseh lecha rav u’kneh lecha chaver”: Get yourself a teacher and find yourself a friend. It’s good advice, and there’s no better place in Jewish Detroit to follow it than here at Beth Ahm. Our friendly culture and our unparalleled opportunities for education set us apart. This fall, we begin a new endeavor in Jewish education, the Thumin Bet Midrash, made possible by a bequest from the estate of Henry and Alice Thumin, of blessed memory. Beginning with a three week mini session leading up to the High Holidays, and continuing throughout the academic year, there will be a series of courses on Jewish texts, Jewish culture, and Jewish history. In addition to Rabbi Rubenstein and Professor Howard Lupovitch, there will be outstanding faculty members from the community. Monday night will be Jewish education night at Beth Ahm, and there will be something for everyone. I encourage you to review the course offerings and to take advantage of this opportunity to learn. Our culture of friendship has enabled us to grow our membership by 12% in the past four years, in the face of trends -- here in Detroit and in the broader American culture --that show religious affiliation generally and synagogue membership in particular on the decline. Our growth, and your generosity, have enabled us to make substantial improvements to our home. Since last Rosh Hashana, we’ve been able to refurbish Nusbaum Hall, our foyer, the Asa & Sara Shapiro entrance, the Staub entrance, the Cykiert hallway, and the religious school/ minyan entrance. In the coming year, our goal is to update the sanctuary. With everyone’s help, I know we can reach this goal. It was the warmth and openness of the Beth Ahm community that drew Alesa and me in, that gave us roots in this place when we came ten years ago, knowing nary a soul. It’s a story I’ve heard from others who have joined us, over and over again. To all of you, my friends, I say keep up the good work! May the coming year be for you and yours one of sweetness and good health, of friendship and of learning.
