women in uniform, serving their Country half-way around the
world. More information can be found at:

Red Ribbon Week
Since 1985, Red Ribbon Week has been recognized
nationally as an annual event to show intolerance for drugs
in our schools and community. We’ve highlighted this
awareness in a fun, age-appropriate way this week, giving
parents the opportunity to start a conversation about the
subject at home with the essay writing and poster contest.
Thank you to all our students who participated. All of the
essays were so well written and it was difficult to pick the
top three. The posters submitted by our younger students
were also wonderful!
The winners of the essay contest are:
First Place: Madalyn 6A
Second Place: Sophia 6A
Third Place: Bridget 5B

School Security Update
I know there has been some talk of a “stranger” on campus
over the last week. An older man on a bike was captured
on video entering the gym door at 4:24pm on October 9th.
He was stopped and questioned by a school employee and
asked to leave.
A police report was made the same day and both the
school and the police have been investigating the incident.
This week a teacher saw the man riding his bike on
Sharpley Road and followed him home. The police made
contact with him yesterday and have informed the school
that he was at the school with good intentions and not a
danger or threat.
The incident highlighted the need for increased awareness
after school hours – during sports practices and games at
night and on weekends. We are meeting with the AA
Director next week to put a plan in place.
St. Mary Magdalen School has registered to participate in
the John Hopkins (CTY) for 2015.
The CTY is a
parent/student driven program for gifted and talented
youth that provides opportunities for challenging Summer
Programs, Online Courses, Family Academic Programs,
Scholarships, and Internships.
Eligibility is based on Terra Nova scores, so we will
nominate students in the spring after we receive the
testing results.
If you would like to participate now, not in conjunction
with SMM, please go to http://cty.jhu.edu for more
information.
In addition to the programs offered outside of the school
through this program, SMM is working on integrating
online learning into the school day as a supplement to the
curriculum. There will be more information available in the
Spring 2015.
Please see the flyer sent home in your
child’s Friday folder. The 8th grade will be
holding a five Below fundraiser this week –
October 24th – 30th where 10% of the
proceeds will be donated back to SMM.
Please take the flyer with you to check-out. Additional
forms are in the school office.
For all of our SMM Families who grocer at ShopRite,

19803 and select “St. Mary Magdalen School” - the
rest is self-explanatory and will tag your grocery
purchases to benefit SMM. This is also another way to
earn Bonus Box Tops for our library. Thank you for
your participation. We appreciate all the help that we
can get!
