Foundation House Times November 2014 FOUNDATION HOUSE AT NORTHGATE In Honor of Veterans Day November is a month that marks the beginning of many seasonal celebrations and in our fast paced culture, I think Thanksgiving overshadows an important holiday that also takes place in November. Veterans Day was established to celebrate and honor all the men and women who have served in the armed forces. We have many veterans living at FHN and it would be a missed opportunity to not hear some of their stories of service for our country. I want to share a couple with you. Bill Britton. : Army Security Agency Bill enlisted in 1959 before he was drafted in order to try and have Above: The USS Menifee, a Haskell Class Amphibious transport on which Glenn served two some say into which branch he served. He joined the Army and was years. sent to Monterey, California, for nine months to learn Russian before he was relocated to Germany where he served most of his time implementing the capability to sabotage Russian radio communications. “We were a subsidiary of the NSA...people called us ‘spooks’ but we weren’t that scary,” he said as he described his work—locating Russian communication sites and strategizing for possible future communication disruption. While in Germany, Bill enjoyed learning to push himself and succeed in the challenging circumstances his work provided, “It was really my first challenging experience and I grew a lot.” Looking back, Bill enjoyed relating, “all the little adventures we had.” He served with a small group of men who worked closely and often together which Bill said inevitably was a breeding ground for deep friendships. Bill served in the Army Security Agency for three-and-a-half years before choosing to not re-enlist and return to college at Seattle University. Later he graduated from UW with a degree in law. As he reflected upon his favorite aspects of serving, Bill’s face lit up and began singing a folk song in Russian… “It was the first time I really learned to sing.” During Russian language training in Monterey, Bill was part of a choir that sang Russian folk songs. “I’ve been involved in other choirs since, but that was the first time I realized I could sing.” Bill has continued his passion for singing through church choirs. Before joining his current choir, he sang with the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Olympia for 30 years. —Glenn Bailey. : Navy : EM2c : USS Menifee Glenn was drafted and originally received orders for radio tech school in 1943, but after training he was placed on the USS Menifee as the electrician and served during her commission in 1944 until her first decommissioning in 1946. The Menifee was an APA Haskell Class Amphibious Transport. During those two years the USS Menifee traveled all over the Pacific to places such as Hawaii, the Phillipines, New Guinea, Japan, the Coral Sea and many others. Glenn had many stories from his time aboard the Menifee, but these two stood out to me (please continue reading article on page 4). Front Page Article Continued... The first story seemed to replay over Glenn’s face like it was yesterday as he recalled the events to me. It was the day the Menifee harbored at Nagasaki, Japan, and he looked over the absolute devastation of the atom bomb as the occupational troops disembarked his ship. He remembers seeing the abolished urban landscape of Nagasaki save for one lone building, “I couldn’t believe it!” He remarked. Dial 107 to make an appointment. Kerri: Tuesday Friday 9:30-12:00 9:30-1:00 The second memory was during the 82-day Battle of Okinawa, and while the Menifee loaded transports with troops which invaded the beachhead, Glenn stood out on the deck, amazed by the vast fleet of ships. He remembers looking from side to side at the hundreds upon hundreds of steel ships spread across the ocean and thinking, “No one will believe me when I tell them how many ships are out here.” During the battle Glenn’s friend watched a kamikaze pilot fly his plane between two towers on the Menifee’s deck, barely missing the ship. As Glenn reflected on his memories of service, he said, “I have to watch my attitude. It is easy to get depressed thinking about those experiences and all the young men who were being sent to that beach (Okinawa). Seeing good men lose their lives... I think back to all that and I’m proud. I’m proud to be a veteran.” To all veterans, thank you for your service! Need a Ride? If you schedule your doctor appointments on a Wednesday or Thursday and it is in the area between the ship canal and 185th in Shoreline, call the front desk at ext. 100 or you can leave a note with your appointment.
