2015 www.clintonparksandrec.com 601-924-6387 JAN FEB MAR Living Young Quarterly Newsletter The Start of a New Year New Computer Station It is so hard to believe that there are only a few days left in 2014. As we look forward to the new year, it is only fitting that we reflect on the great changes that have come to the Parks and Recreation Department’s Wood Activity Center. Nearly twelve months ago, the center was transformed from a place that housed only a few folding tables and chairs to a warm, inviting place for area seniors to enjoy. The additions to the Wood Center have provided opportunities for new and improved programming which have brought the facility much deserved recognition. In the new year, the department promises to continue to move forward with the vision of providing something for everyone through programming. 2015 is expected to bring exciting new things to the Wood Center. We are proud to announce that there will be a small computer lab added to the programming room at the facility in January. This facility will serve as a place for individuals ages 50+ to search the World Wide Web, learn how to use basic programs, stay informed by receiving information by email through the City of Clinton’s e-blasts and so much more. Small classes will be taught throughout the year to help with basic computer skills for those who may need assistance in getting started. The first course, Introduction to Computer Applications will be held on January 23rd at 2:30pm. The goal of this course is for participants to become familiar with computer hardware and peripheral devices, software applications, and understanding file management. The class is open to individuals ages 50+ and is perfect for those with little to no experience with computers. Since space is limited, a second session will be offered on February 25th, also at 2:30. Participants may have at leisure access to the computer stations at no charge, Monday through Friday between the hours of 10:00am and 4:30pm. Update: Living Young Tours The Living Young group prides itself on providing quality travel opportunities for senior adults throughout the year. In November, a full motorcoach of senior adults made its way to the Crescent City, New Orleans Louisiana to watch the Phantom of the Opera in the newly restored Saenger Theatre. Great times were had shopping at the French Market before the matinee of the famous stage play. Find a copy of the latest Hometown Clinton Magazine to view photos from our day in New Orleans. On December 8th - 12th another full load traveled to San Antonio for our Annual Christmas Tour. The group enjoyed great times together as they experienced the lights on the Riverwalk, visited New Braunsville, toured President Lyndon B. Johnson’s Ranch and so much more. Look for details on future tours in the Living Y oung Quarterly Newsletter and online. The most common resolution is to lose weight or to simply become more physically fit. If this is your resolution or if you are already active and want to do more a little more in the new year, the Wood Center is the perfect place to get started. Aside from the exercise equipment made available for senior adults, there are other programs offered at the center with goals of improved fitness and health. Yoga: Please join Chelsea Wells, for a one hour gentle, flowing Chair Yoga Class on Tuesdays at 9:30am in January. The class will consist of various exercises done from a seated position, as well as standing positions utilizing the chair for balance. Yoga helps strengthen and stretch the body. It also relieves joint pain by heating and moving synovial fluid through the joints. The weight bearing aspects of yoga increase bone strength, which helps prevent osteoporosis. Wear comfortable clothing that doesn't restrict movement; bare feet or tennis shoes are best. All fitness levels are welcome. Seniorsize: This class is for individuals of all fitness and ability levels and has been proven to show results of reduced pain for individuals with arthritis. This class incorporates full body exercises from both seated and standing positions as well as dance & movement and relaxation techniques. Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11:00am. Tai Chi: For those who may enjoy a slower paced exer cise and relaxation, the seated Tai Chi class is the perfect way to start your day. Join us each Wednesday at 9:00am.
