All Students Now Have Access
to Library Cards Thanks to LSU Student
There was a time when some young students could not sign up for a Library
card, therefore have access to all the East Baton Rouge Parish Library’s (EBRPL)
rich resources and books, because they had no transportation to the Library.
That time has passed, thanks
to the efforts of one Louisiana
State University student, Kurt
Ristroph. A student of LSU’s
Chemical
Engineering
and
Classical Civilizations, Ristroph
worked with the LSU Honors
College to create VOLUMEN,
which stands for Volunteering
Our Library’s Universal Materials
for Educational Needs, Project.
An Honors College soph
omore, Ristroph saw a critical
gap in how school children gain
access to Library resources and Library Board President Tanya Freeman presented
has found a way to bridge that Ristroph with a resolution for his program.
gap. Through the VOLUMEN Project, the Library will be able to provide Library
cards to children who would not otherwise have access to the vast array of digital
resources available at the East Baton Rouge Parish Library.
The plan is to make the project live in November with the issuance of special
Library cards that will be added to the collections of local elementary, middle and
high school libraries. Students than can check out the card from the school library
and use it to gain access online to the EBRPL Digital Library for their personal
use.
The Digital Library (at www.ebrpl.com and open to all Library cardholders)
has downloadable ebooks, DVDs and music; practice tests; reading games on
TumbleBooks; homework help through tutor.com connections; Accelerated
Reader book recommendations; math assistance; computer trainings; software
downloads; and much more that is positive, free help for students who need it.
Children also are invited to visit a local Library branch and use the free computers
and free WiFi service.
The East Baton Rouge Parish Library serves many children and teens who live
in the area. In the last six months, for example, more than 10,938 children, 4,533
tweens and 3,155 teens used their Library cards online or at Library branches.
This project has earned Ristroph a leadership award with the Ogden
Leaders Selection Committee. The East Baton Rouge Library Board of Control
also recognized him recently with a resolution. For more information,

BP Oil Spill: Are Those Fish Safe to Eat?
The Louisiana State University (LSU) Renewable Natural Resource Wetlands
ecologist, Dr. Andy Nyman, and the LSU Aquaculture Research fish physiologist,
Dr. Chris Green, will be at the Bluebonnet Regional Branch at 6 p.m. Thursday,
November 20, to engage adult participants in an interactive presentation of their
research. This research was conducted to get a better understanding of the toxic
effects of oil spill dispersants on wetlands and to assist in the development of
less toxic surfactants. Learn what surfactants are and how oil affects the toxicity
to sea life. A question-and-answer period will follow the free presentation. Light
refreshments will be served. For more information, call (225) 763-2240.

Storytime
at the library
Storytime gives children an excellent introduction to books and the library, increases
their attention spans and develops their social skills by involving them in stories, poetry
and songs. The Children’s Services staff hopes Storytime will be an enjoyable experience
for each child, leading to a lifelong love of books and reading. You are always welcome
to attend Storytime with your child. We offer seven different Storytime formats. Since
children develop at different rates, you may talk with one of our library staff members to
place your child in a younger or older group. For more information, call your local library.
