The Holy Father’s Prayer Intentions for November 2014
General: That all who suffer loneliness may experience the
closeness of God and the support of others.
Mission: That young seminarians and religious may have
wise and well-formed mentors.
ARCHBISHOP’S MESSAGE
Reverend and dear Fathers,
Brothers and Sisters, prayerful wishes
and greetings to you in the holy
name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Year of Consecrated Life
2014 – 2016
1. Consecrated life
All Christians, by virtue of their baptism, are called to follow
Christ, to be the disciples and witnesses of Christ, to be the heralds
of the Gospel of Christ. Religious vocation is a special vocation to
follow Christ more closely. “Religious are to find their supreme
rule of life in the following of Christ as proposed in the Gospel
and as expressed in the constitutions of their own institute” (Can.
662).
Religious make a total consecration of their whole person
to God, who is supremely loved. In imitation of the most Blessed
Virgin Mary, with the heart and mind of Mary, the religious make
a total unconditional and absolute surrender of themselves at the
feet of Christ. The profession and practice of evangelical counsels
of chastity, poverty, and obedience are the concrete expressions
of their total consecration to God and enable them to love Christ
with an undivided heart and to dedicate themselves fully to the
mission of Christ.
Religious life is more a matter of being than doing; it is more
relational than functional. The religious, following the particular

charisms of their institute, do a lot of ministries and services in
the fields of education, health care and social development. These
ministries and services are to be rooted in their total consecration
of their whole person. The religious belong to the life and holiness
of the church. It should be always kept in mind that “the apostolate
of all religious consists primarily in the witness of their
consecrated life” (Can. 673).
His Holiness Pope Francis has proclaimed the Year of
Consecrated Life which starts on the First Sunday of Advent,
30th November 2014 and ends on 2nd February 2016, the world
day of Consecrated life.
During this period, the consecrated persons are invited to
review their being and doing, their life and activities, to renew
themselves internally and spiritually and to rededicate themselves
to their mission, ministries and services. All of us are exhorted to
pray in a very special way for an increase of religious vocations.
God has showered upon the faithful graces upon graces through
the consecrated presence, devout prayer and dedicated services
of the religious. The faithful are called upon to thank God for the
blessings received through the religious and to pray for them in a
special way throughout the year of the consecrated life.
God has blessed our Archdiocese of Pondicherry and
Cuddalore with a big number of religious – Sisters, Brothers and
Priests. They take an active part in the life and mission of our
Archdiocese and make significant contribution to its growth. We
greatly appreciate and thank very much all the Religious in our
Archdiocese for their consecrated presence, exemplary lives and
dedicated services. We continue to pray for them in a special way
during the year of the consecrated life.
May Mary, the model and guide of consecrated persons, bless
and protect all the Religious in the world.

NECROLOGY
œ
Here is a humble suggestion for St. Ann’s College,
Tindivanam. One day’s salary for the college from all
the Catholics, Priests, Sisters and Brothers will realize
the project in a very meaningful way. Kindly consider
and be moved to spare one day’s wage for a noble
cause of the people of God. Similarly, other projects
can be worked out. Our people have grown now to
contribute and distribute than to receive and hoard.
Praise the Lord.
œ
We are half a crore of Catholics in Tamilnadu. Bishops,
Priests, Religious and the Laity have started, with the
blessings of our Beloved Mother Mary, the MADHA
TV in Chennai. Rs.100/- per month there could be at
least one lakh of monthly subscribers from Tamilnadu
to TV. God invites all of us to pray and become regular
subscribers with active participation in broadcasting
the human, the Christian and the march on towards
the Kingdom of God. For our Archdiocese, Fr. A. J.
Philomindoss our Pastoral Centre Coordinator is ready
to pool and forward to the T.V., our Archbishop being
one of the founding member of the company.
œ
During this month of November may the church that
is on pilgrimage, the triumphant church and the
suffering church be specially remembered. What we
sow now, we will reap in the future. Let us remember
our beloved ones.
œ
All are most welcome for the family gathering of Priests
in the Sat-Sangh. Let us celebrate spiritually our life
as one Presbyterium.

ministers of the Church of Christ, interpreters of the discipline,
promoters of justice and advocates for the people. Prof. Dr. Cyriac

Archbishop Dr. A. Anandarayar presided over the
meeting and spoke about the Synod of the Bishop to be
held in Rome in October 2014. He shortlisted the
challenges the family faces today. Very Rev. Fr. A. Louis,
the Episcopal Vicar spoke about the three types of
families.
1. Married family.
2. Family of the Religious.
3. Family of the clergy.
Very Rev. Fr. A. Arulanandam, the Vicar General spoke about
the ‘Sat Sangh.’ Rev. Fr. A. J. Philomindass, the director of the
pastoral centre addressed that we should follow the Biblical values.
We should be ready to become servants in the church rather than
masters. But very often we are good administrators and Managers,
he added. Nearly 40 members participated and shared their views
regarding the expectations of the clergy from Laity and
expectations of the Laity from the clergy. Diocesan Laity
commission members took part in the meeting along with the
secretary and submitted the report to pastoral commission.

AN APPLE A DAY
Why Are Apples So Healthy?
We all know that old saying: “An apple a day keeps the doctor
away.” But have you ever wondered why that is? How one apple
a day can bring about significant health benefits? If you have, then
you’ll be glad to read this article. From strengthening the immune
system, through preventing cancerous growths and to losing
weight, say hello to your one apple a day!
How do apples do what they do?
An important research published in 2008 by the German
cancer research center, showed that apples offer a significant health
advantage. When comparing between a group that had less than
one apple per day and a group that had one or more apples a day,
the latter was found to have less risk of mouth cancer, larynx cancer,
breast cancer, intestinal cancer, kidney cancer and ovarian cancer.
These findings support a new research performed at Cornell
university, showing that the peel of the apple has strong antioxidant properties, a powerful block against the influences of
breast cancer cells. Researchers found that the higher the
concentration of apples, the lower the concentration of cancerous
cells. Cancerous growths are uncontrollable growths of cells
independently spreading through the body.

vitamins, makes them one of the healthiest foods available. The
secret is in the nutritional fibers. Apples are considered a vital
source of nutritional fibers. Eating one apple a day (with peel) can
award us about 4.4 grams of nutritional fibers, which is 1/5 of our
entire day’s recommended amount. Nutritional fibers are materials
found in foods that come from plants, and have a very important
role in stimulating the digestive system and encouraging its
function. Since they are not digested and taken apart in the body,
they sate our hunger for a longer period of time. Extensive research
has shown that those that do not get their daily recommended
amount (at least 25 grams a day), deny themselves a host of health
benefits.
In addition, the researchers found that consuming these fibers
is quite the effective method of losing weight. The secret is in the
chewing. Drinking apple juice will not bring about the same health
benefits. We would be happy to receive the essential sugars and
vitamins, but we would not get the fibers. A research conducted
in China found that chewing can help the body regulate the amount
of calories it absorbs from food.
The growths are based on three principal levels: The first
stage causes mutations in cell DNA. The second, when the growth
becomes malignant and grows faster, and finally when it
metastases and spreads throughout the body. In the case of a
cancerous growth, apples aren’t only used as anti-oxidants, but
also improve the function of the immune system, which helps
clean out the growths at the early stages. In addition to boosting
the immune system and fighting cancerous growths, apples also
help control the levels of cholesterol and sugars in the blood,
prevent heart disease and improve mouth hygiene. The fact that
they contain more than 80% water and a long line of essential
What does this have to do with apples? Everything. Apples
are a terrific source of nutritional fibers, especially a group of fibers
called Pectin. This is a group of complex carbohydrates that
regulate our bowels, improve good cholesterol rates and is a
powerful anti-oxidant and anti-bacterial. Researchers from UCLA
have shown that consuming pectin instead of regular fibers,
doubles the time it takes the stomach to empty from one hour to
two. Meaning that we do not feel hungry for a longer time. In
fact, a recent research paper entitled: “Weight Loss Associated
with a Daily Intake of Three Apples or Three Pears among
Overweight Women”, shows that women suf fering fr om
overweight were instructed to eat an apple or pear before each
meal, lost significant weight, just for doing so. The women in the
experiment were asked to eat regularly and just add the apple
before the meal. What happened was that the apples and fibers
crowded the stomach, increased the feeling of being full, and
made the body absorb less calories. Other sources of nutritional

fibers are: Pears, Peaches, peas, carrots, seeds, nuts, peel of fruits
and vegetables, legumes, whole grains, oats and whole wheat.
But apples offer many more advantages.
So if you want to: Lose weight, eat one apple a day.
Strengthen your immune system, eat one apple a day. Control
the level of cholesterol, eat one apple a day. Prevent the spread
of cancerous cells, eat one apple a day. And if you want to keep
the doctor away - EAT ONE APPLE A DAY!
